How long do ELECTRIC vehicle BATTERIES last? EV Battery Lifecycle with TWAICE

What is the lifetime of a battery in an EV? The battery warranty of most electric vehicles today is around 8 to 10 years and 100 to 150k miles - but we have to face it, electric vehicle batteries do loose capacity over time which will reduce the mileage of your car.
But the interesting thing is - this “aging” and the final lifetime of your battery depends on HOW YOU USE your electric car. How much charging, discharging at which temperatures and so on.
This raises the question, is it possible to predict the lifetime or remaining life of a battery in an electric car and can we do something to maximize the life?

When I tell my friends I'm looking to get an EV the first things they say are batteries don't last forever, what's it cost to replace them, what happens to the old ones? Lots of questions that they don't want to go look for the answers to. I ask them how long will your gas engine last? what's that cost let alone the price of gas to electric comparison. Great content as always, thanks for what you do.

There will always be people that only want to find reasons why certain things won't work - I just hope to be able to contribute a bit to let them see the facts and opportunities! I guess what did not really come across in the video that I would have liked to add - if you look at the 70-80% capacity mark that we call batteries "dead" in EVs we also have to realize that the batteries still work and we could still drive the cars around just with a reduced range. One thing about 2nd life batteries, is if there is enough life left and the second half life degradation curve is not going off the cliff, then if we remove the batteries from vehicles and use them in stationary applications, the lower power to weight ratio does not hurt you except on a space and volume hit. But that is not a real big issue. If they charge slowly all day and get cycled once at night killing the evening electric power duck curve, they can last as long as they did in the car. Only if there is a fire danger do they need to be removed as they degrade. lowering of the peak voltage used for charging, allows for extending and reducing fire risk.

Ok, Aussie girl here, and so here's my two cents worth, and I'll use a car I owned for 16 years as an example. back in 1992, I bought a second hand 1983 Nissan Bluebird Station Wagon. was in excellent condition, even though it was nearly 10 years old when I bought it. 2 litre 4 cylinder with automatic transmission. as mentioned, I owned it for the next 16 years. and over that time I had to spend very little to keep it maintained in tip top condition. and when I traded it in on another car in the 2000's, despite it being much older by then, it was still running the original motor and transmission, which had over 350,000 Km's on them at that time. I wonder if people will be able to get the same life out of an EV battery?

Same concerns here, will wait for better battery technologies coming 2030. Samsung SDI, Toyota and others coming up with better technology by 2027/28. Makes sense to buy an EV if batteries last at least 16 years or it's not cost-effective.

Great job guys! I think it should be highlighted that the service life of a bus battery is not the same as a commuter EV. You may have said it but I missed it.

So if a EV has an estimated range of 315 miles. Is that at an 80% charge or 100% charge?

Great comment! There is a lot of progress in this field. I was very skeptical of solid state batteries for a long time, mainly because the first chemistries had the disadvantage of expanding by up to 20% when charged and only working under high mechanical pressure and temperature, but research has progressed in recent years and a couple startups have changed the game a bit. I will post a video on solid state batteries in February with all the details!

Dr V., Great video, great content!! This type of solution is great for fleet managers. But when (or if) do you see software being added to EVs to assist drivers in optimizing battery life and performance? Even operating "tips" based on how a driver charges (e.g., cold battery start, less fast charging, etc.) could be meaningful for new EV drivers until these new ways of thinking become second nature. Thoughts?

When I look at my own EVs (the Mustang and the F150 Lighting) and the apps that come along, I guess they somewhat started to implement those best practices - but it could be better and more intuitive. For example they tell you in the app that you should precondition your EV in cold temperatures in the winter so the batteries (and cabin) get heated before you start driving in the winter - plus they have this option to set a maximum state of charge limit for home charging so you avoid your car being fully charged when you don't need it. So there are certain recommendations built in and a couple startups that build those data driven platforms and visualizations - after all there is room for making it more intuitive and let it become 2nd nature.

so as I understood, is predicting the battery conditions and anomalies as well as a the remaining life kind of a Predictive Maintenance? but how is maintenance of the battery connected with those prediction? why aren’t OEMs developing their own solutions for the battery?

Car makers do not want cars on the road for more than eight years. They want and need you to upgrade. The average vehicle age on the street in California is 12-15 years. They do not make money if you keep your car longer. This is forcing you to get rid of your car faster.

But short product life IS the environmental disaster. Poor use of resources if the vehicle is continually being 'recycled'. The so called progress is enslaving us. And vehicles that rust. It's deliberate so as to perpetuate the recycling program. But worse. Rusty vehicles are a major safety concern.
