I come from a very strict Asian family and after a couple months from starting piano, the music my piano teacher gave me was starting to become difficult so I would spend hours playing the whole song over and over again because my parents would get angry at me if I haven’t “passed” the song that week, which killed the fun out of it. I thought I was just bad at piano but this video made me realize that I should try piano again but with a different game plan. Thank you

It happens to me too. I am so passionate to learn piano, its the only way i can express myself whether i'm happy or sad at the moment because as i grew up i tend to speak less and i can't cry anymore, i'm not an introvert, am an ambivert but i guess i've mastered a thing called ' hiding your feelings ' until you realized there's no such thing as that. You cannot hide your feelings, you have to express it in any ways some day. But when i go to classes the teachers were so strict, i'm a slow-learner and they were giving up on me. So i lost motivation for 2 years, gave up on piano until yesterday i stumbled upon a piano cover for a song, i really wish i could play like them.

When I first started playing at 8yrs old, I literally had to be torn away from the piano. The secret is practice and as much as you can. Listen to many types of music as well, and it will come to you. Then the "magic" happens. Being able to "improvise" on the spot. Feeling and hearing the music before it even reaches your fingers. It's an exhilarating feeling. Listening to music is wonderful. Being able to play it, and create it, is divine. Practice practice practice - is the answer ;-) Have a blast!

Im now 6 months in piano I didn't do your tutorial cuz i didn't know it was there but basically i did what you did -just want to clear i'm self thought and don't have a teacher. 1. I was practicing the scales but for an unknown period of time 7/7 days in a week : i noticed my hands became quick and the wrong notes during songs reduced. 2. I used to play by ear a lot at first i was able to play the melody only but after 2 months i decided to learn piano genuinely and read theory. I learnt a lot from theory which made me after only 1 month i started to play songs by ear with melody and bass. 3.the first thing i did was learning songs cuz i didn't know there was things you need to learn i just loved the piano. My first song was classical and it is the one and only "fur elise" i learned only the first 2 parts the rest seemed way out of level then i slid into pop songs which made me more comfortable cuz it had easy rhythms and repeating a lot. The biggest mistake you do when you learn a song is practice the first parts only ( he said it in the video) it happens when u make a mistake and say "ugh i gotta start over". U need to play it and continue from where you made the mistake it's easier for you because if you play from the beginning you'll be too focused on the first part and forget the the main part u're stuck at. I now can play some hard covers made by rousseau and other insane pianists out there. But still u need to achieve more When you learn to do all 12 major scales at 90 bpm. Push ur self more u need to learn it at 100bpm then increase the speed once in a while.

The advantage (in my eyes) is that playing piano is a hobbie for most people, not a mandatory task. It's a lot easier to develop skills when there is no one to force you. I love music and I want to improve so I practice practice and then practice some more. 3 hours fly by easily when I turn on my Yamaha. Having a guitar background sure helped me as well. But I completely fell in love with the keys a year ago, it's such a majestic and complete instrument and is really immersive.

You are a wonderful example of Professor Debenport's wisdom. I am 77 now and I watch EVERY video you put out. In fact, I look forward to them. Guys and gals, I hope you realize how fortunate we all are to have Zach. I have never seen anyone with so much passion for teaching and beautifully demonstrating what he teaches. I definitely believe you mate, the problem is that I am motivated and I try playing for 30 minutes 7 days a week. In reality, this always end up being 30 minutes maybe 3-4 times a week. I am still making good progress, but if I'd double the amount of work I put in - of course I could learn piano the way you are explaining. I believe TRUE motivation is the key - this will get you your hours. Thanks for all the great videos, keep 'em coming :)

I’m a piano performance major and I will say that if you want simply play piano then practice however much you want as long as there is consistency but, honestly if you are looking to make a job out of it or even a side job especially as a teacher you MUST spend at least 2 hours everyday practicing by the time you are in high school and have started at a young age 5-7 otherwise you will be playing catch up. Trust me it’s hard, I didn’t get into a BIG music school but even with that since I started at age 7 and then had a 4 year break at 12 I had to practice at least 4 hours a day to even get into music school. Now that I am in college I practice 3 hours minimum but usually around 5-6 just to keep up with my base solo and chamber repertoire. My colleagues especially this one guy actually only needs to practice 2-3 hours a day for the same results so he has time to add on more pieces for fun and he had kept with piano since the same age as me but did not have a 4 year gap. So fair warning, do not take this video as validation that you can begin and learn the piano 2 or even 3 years before you major in it. (Unless you are an incredible prodigy but even the best prodigies need at least 2 years) Otherwise great video.
@matsab79304 жыл бұрын
i think you're confusing the intention of this video - you're training as a piano performance major, most people are not. you're a fringe case, you literally need to be able to play many pieces for any recitals you may have, and i presume those pieces are very complex. Myself and the majority of people playing piano are aiming to get good so they can play their favourite pieces of music or so they can compose better music themselves. Hell, even if you want to perform in a band it's unlikely they're be asking you to play any chopin pieces or anything extremely technical. Becoming a true master at the instrument, as with becoming a master as anything, requires you to dedicate your life to it.

I've been playing for about a week or two. I've already learned the first half of Für Elise, left and right hand of Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and The Lonely by Christina Perri. I am very relentless with myself and play 5-6 hours everyday. If the piece isn't played perfectly I start the whole song over. I like to memorize the song and work on technique later. I'm looking into lessons but I kind of like learning on my own. Then again I have plenty of time since I'm 13.

From Jan 2019 Ive become immersed in piano [bought an 88key Roland Fantom in February] and am literally obsessed with it: So much so Ive put in as much as 12 hours [and more] in one day: A few times in the past weeks I was `forced` to pull away on a few occasions after feeling a weird sudden euphoria as though I was observing myself playing: It was like a massive but sudden rush or `high` if you will: I now believe this is called cathartic musical release and or a mixture of piano euphoria? This happens when I instantly - without warning make a breakthrough in my piano perception: Now I can play certain pieces without thinking and can even do `other things` whilst playing: Piano and both hands as one are a strange but compelling instrument: Then again I have always done things in extremes: I began with Beethoven and Mozart and thats where I am at: Almost completed Rondo Alla Turca *properly* now: Linear time barely exists when you practice: Its when you decide to stop and realize its now dark outside: @Become a Piano Superhuman - THANKS

2020 XMAS - I’m 69 and started 2 years ago w/ my Yamaha 125. It’s really frustrating at times when you progress too slowly. But, I was only spending 30 minutes on average every other day, plus spending time with a note learning app probably 20 minutes at night every other day. I’ve made it through 2 levels of music books by Piano Adventures and this is great for learning. I can connect my Yamaha up to my Apple I pad Pro and turn Piano Adventures on and play along with many different songs from beginners to advanced. I put it on “wait” mode and the song will wait for me to play the correct notes or note. Once you’ve rehearsed well enough to speed up, take it off wait mode. And your in business. I’m still not satisfied at all with where I’m at yet. On the note App I’m at 98% accuracy and 1.6 seconds between notes. That’s having the app set to cover all notes flats & sharps from C1 all the way to C6. The hardest part after 2 years is using both hands in songs. If the song uses chords only for the left hand, I can learn an intermediate song in a couple of weeks if I practice enough. If the left hand has melodies involved’then it’s really tough!

Can someone answer this. I have a strong desire to learn the piano so I want to practice as much as I can. Is it possible to "practice too much" or to go too long? I'll go until I'm exhausted. My back will start hurting, my arms will get tired, my fingers get cramped, I could feel my mind getting exhausted and anxious. Can I go until I can't keep up the focus?

I would think that the brain can only learn for 20 minutes before it runs out of steam. For the first year practice for half an hour... 2nd year practice for 45 minutes... 3rd year practice for 1hr... 5-6 days a week.... You will know how much information you can retain and do correctly. Any thing you are playing repeat correctly up to 7 times then you now you have learnt it before you move on. This is how I'm doing it. Good luck with you practice remember to have a break to 😉

One more question. I'm going to take what you say and go by that. Only half hour practice sessions. What about half hour practice sessions a few times a day. Like, once when I wake up. Another, midday, and another at night? OR, it it best to only do one session per day 5-6 days a week? TBH, the thing that keeps me going is the challenge. It's fun. I'm an anxious person and I always feel a need to be doing something with my hands. Video games don't really work anymore, so I picked up my keyboard and started practicing. In a weird way it's kind of addicting.

One day at 5 hrs isn’t as good as 5 days at 1 hr. I tell people often that it’s sooooo simple to learn music because we are all made for it. It’s pattern recognition. it’s the stigmas that prevent people or discourage them. It’s no more complicated than many other things you do in life.

My tip: don't focus on how far you are at being good, it's better to just focus on the progress you've already made. Asking "how long does it take to be good" is irrelevant in my opinion. I've been playing 11 years. And if the answer to that question is important to you, and u only do those 10 minute practise, u don't have the right motivations to play. U should play for fun. Getting good is side effect

*Easy... There is no length...* 1. You're ALWAYS learning. 2. It can take people years to GET GOOD. 3. Playing scales isn't mastering piano whatsoever... (No need really). 4. If you want, you can play what ever you want regardless of ability (just practise). 5. Playing by ear (relative pitch) can also take months/years! 6. Anyone bother to learn music theory anymore??
@xerus74256 жыл бұрын
I learned music theory while practising pieces. Once you're into it, it comes around naturally. I realised how logically all the scales and chords are constructed. A year ago, people were telling me about the circle of fifths and how you should know it by heart. I never bothered. Then, while playing piano, I realised that you just have to move 7 semitones each. 3 down for minor. It's so easy and intuitive, but you understand it much better and actually care about when you're into the music already.
@craigj30475 жыл бұрын
Scales and chords/notes that make sense and sound good together are what it's all about. Idc if I'm talking to Batoven. Nobody can say that's not the main idea.
@craigj30475 жыл бұрын
Music theory sucks. It sucks because in my opinion if you want to play something lower or higher sounding you'll do it by ear not by referring to a letter. How do you think people got good before all these notes and theories were invented? For me getting good at piano and or midi keyboard/digital instruments is all about finding notes that sound good together whether it's simple( better at first ) or more complex. It will happen naturally but chords will help.

It's very simple and doesn't take as long as you would estimate. The keys simply repeat themselves from one octave to the next. Just learn what the keys are, how to read the music properly. The notes, symbols, and what the time numbers mean. Start out playing a simple song until you get the hang of it. It can take 3-6 weeks. Unless you have your own piano 😁. I taught myself how to play. I've played for 22 years now. So it doesn't take very long to learn how to play.

As someone who has completed grade 8 piano and played on this is very misleading. Yes you can learn solid technique in that you can play the most basic of scales but there's so much more to learn than simple scales. Learning just scales is like having learnt the alphabet, you still can't spell any words let alone read. If you play nearly every day for 40-60min for a year you should be able to play grade 3 songs really well. That's my guess from what I've seen. Just enjoy what you're currently working on, theres no rush. Even playing scales/exercises will be fun.

I picked up piano about a month ago. I already play violin, but piano is just on a different level entirely. It's incredibly difficult because one uses both hands and hits notes simultaneously. Violin practically plays itself since you're just following one or two notes at a time. In the other hand, the piano does it all. There's nothing the piano can't play. It's an incredible instrument (I have a Casio 870 digital piano) because it's so versatile.

I practice 90 minutes a day 6 days a week. I’ve being doing this for 23 months. None of this comes easy given I’m 73 years old. A typical beginner song takes me 3 to 4 weeks to master. Giving a timetable without taking into goals, accounting for age, motivation, and talent is, at best, discouraging. I’d rather see benchmarks for determining when I reach various levels with no mention of time. My benchmark is where I am in my Alfred 1 book plus guidance from my teacher.

As a motivation boost for you beginners: I actually learned a song (Memories from Shadow of the Colossus) in just 3 days! I just downloaded the MIDI File and the software Synthesia and practiced 10 hours a day for 3 days and by the end I could play it! After that I played it without the software stopping at every key I haven't pressed yet ('rhytm' play) and by the end of 1 week I was able to play that song anywhere! (however doesn't change the fact that I would have to start over like this with the next song and again the next - which is kinda useless - so i advise you to actually learn scales, chords and reading music in order to make playing piano more easy over time and not it staying at the same difficulty since you have no idea of how that music works in generell)
@tdijon76 жыл бұрын
Learning the major scales is definitely not enough to have "solid technique." Learning the 12 major scales is what beginning piano students do. We're talking kids who are six or seven years old.

To put it into perspective for you Virtuosos can play Major Scales at 144bpm 16th notes for 4 octaves. Being able to play at 90bpm 16th notes one octave is a good milestone for an absolute beginner. Once you hit that, play 2 octaves at that speed and so on until you can play 4 octaves at a speed of 90bpm or more, 16th notes. It gives you some basic technique and hand coordination. For an absolute beginner to go from not being able to do scales hands together at all most likely, to playing 90bpm 16ths in just 3 months is pretty good progress in my eyes. Plus, you become overall comfortable no matter the (Major) scale you play in, which is a huge hurdle for most beginners. Those black keys are scary

I just bought Synthesia, been playing with the sheet music on and the falling notes disabled. Y'all have no idea how helpful it is. You can download MIDI tracks from wherever you want and import them into Synthesia and it's got this built in training mode (per song) and you can isolate notes to hands and play one hand at a time. It keeps track of your progress for a particular song, and it's got like 150 built-in songs with ranging difficulty (the hardest ones are maybe like a 3 or 4 difficulty on the 'piano world' classical pieces scale). It's super addictive.

Zach what you are saying makes a whole lot of sense. I'm actually impressed with your presentation, I can almost feel like you have bioscience background. I've been playing the piano for 16yrs I feel you man, you are being clear and fair. That's one of the best ways of learning something like playing the piano - through carefully designed and scheduled repetition. So yeah I'm deeply convinced it is possible to get to that skill level in 12 weeks. The hardest part is indeed STRICTLY following the practice plan every day no matter what. It's like losing weight, it's definitely more than possible to lose 15kg of body weight in 3 months (~12 weeks), all you have to do is strictly follow your whatever diet or exercise plan, everyone knows it but not everyone succeeds trying because it's HARDER than it looks. So for those 'it's too good to be true' people, it is true alright, but it's not 'good' in your sense. Because it's one thing to play your favorite songs(fun and enjoyable), building up your technique is a completely different story. You gonna experience hardship following these practice plan, that means it could be no fun practicing basic technique sometimes, or you may need to resolve some conflict in your daily life to squeeze time for the practice, or you may need to practice anyway when you are upset or tired or not really in the mood cuz remember you have to follow the practice plan every day NO MATTER WHAT. He's already giving you all the information on how exactly to practice and drills and all that(maybe not for free ofc), but he's also giving you caveats which are basically telling you it's harder to do than it sounds.

As a seasoned piano teacher (40+ years of experience), ten minutes a day will simply not cut it. Ten minutes a day is appropriate for students ages 4 - 6. But not for older students 7 and up and including adults. I might add that it absolutely DOES depend. It depends on each individual student. It depends on how much time a student is willing to devote to accomplishing specific goals. It may take some students 3 months to grasp a concept, while it could take others only 1 month. I’ve been playing over 50 years (all styles, all levels, improv, composing, jazz and playing by ear) Believe me, I wish there were a magic pill but there just isn’t. The hard truth is, it takes time and dedication. Persistence is the ONLY thing that will make a student play as he or she would like to play sooner rather than later. Enjoy the journey. I cannot tell you how many people have come to me with horrible habits after attempting to learn online or by themselves, with no one there to guide them, correcting fingering, articulation and instilling solid practice habits. Those students either end up quitting or taking twice as long to learn to play correctly, because of the time it takes to undue bad habits. Think twice folks. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Best of luck to all of you

He will be a concurrent student at our local JC and has a rigorous schedule in evenings at studio as well as his class schedule. This was the bow on the package. Thank you very much. As tired as he was, he watched every minute and is excited to refocus his technique time with the keys! If you have any tips on a good 88 key keyboard please advise, you or anyone here. He does not need one with soundtracks etc necessarily. Just needs to be with him through his next 4 years. Thank you in advance.

WOW I am a drummer and this guy has inspired me to take up piano ! Great presentation and everything he has said applies to anything you would like to successfully do in life ! Success in any field is not based on pure talent alone. Anything you want to do well needs to have a Strategy , dedicated "good" PRACTICE , some passion and maybe some SACRIFICE "get off the computer /TV / video games ! If you don't have the self DISCIPLINE to apply these then the immeasurable pleasure of playing music will pass you by ! The best musicians I have worked with have "ALL " applied these rules to their playing. The best advice I ever had from a brilliant musician was that he not only practiced but he applied the mindset of perfect practice makes perfect ! Meaning he never practiced for the sake of practice and always started slow and precise until he was competent.

I’ve been reading comments. You are the first one I see that has this natural ability. I thing I have the similar thing. I had no idea that other people can’t hear a song and sing do re mi fa so... out of the melody. I can always do a melody in c scale using one finger. I want to start learning piano. I want to know is this an advantage. May I ask, can you do a melody in other scale?
