The important thing is that you should never try to force yourself, if you feel like reading it and you're interested enough. Then you should definitely read it, and the story is separated into 8 episodes. With each being a different book in a big story, you can definitely take a break after finishing every episode. And you will always be able to jump to any part you want in the story, if you want to remember something. Or you can look at the hints and character page of a specific episode to get a quick recap. I took about a month between every episode. So don't just feel like you have to speed run it. You should definitely take it slow, and take that amazing experience. I also took a 4 month break before finishing the last 2 episodes. And all I have to do was have a quick look at the previous hints and i was good to go. I never actually played long visual novels at the time, but you can get with how long it is and how hard it is to get into it. I took it as a challenge, and just jumped in. I've been a lifelong reader with decades of books, obscure and known, under my built, and Umineko is the greatest story I've ever read. It is such a wonderful homage to the mystery and thriller genre, with so many delightful tributes to Agatha Christie, Knox, Souji Shimoda, Doyle, Stout....many others. The logic puzzles are cleverly folded into a neat package that slowly expands for the reader, raising new questions to be answered inch by inch, until the pieces start to fall into place. The characters are incredibly fun, and Ryuukishi turns logic battle into epic struggles straight out of a Shonen Jump action show. My point is, you have good taste. And for my money, this is the best visual novel out there. Fans of mystery- or conspiracy-themed VNs such as Steins;Gate would definitely love it. I was lucky enough to start it when it first came out, at the same time as a friend. For years, I would call him during my drive to work, and as the story went on, we would discuss and debate possible solutions to the mysteries. I have never enjoyed any discussion of a work of media that much since.

Both have their own strengths and weaknesses, they share similar themes, the emotional aspects of both are pretty much equal to me, and I’ve fallen in love/unhealthy obsession with the witches of both games, which never usually happens. I’d say Umineko is the older, more sophisticated sibling, and Fata is the younger, but more mature sibling. I don’t know where I’m going with this, but yeah, they’re like sisters to me. Or wives. It took us about 6 months to finish arc 1 and half of arc 2 (I visited every friday night - sunday night) and then he gave up due to lack of "gameplay". We played 999 after that, but I couldn't let Umineko go. I wasn't very invested in it to be honest, considering that arc 2 felt a lot like a rehash of arc 1 so I played it very moderately, about a half hour every weekend. It wasn't until I finished arc 2 that I became engrossed in the story. The ending of arc 2 got me completely in love with Umineko and every ending of every episode after that seemed to one up the previous arc. The beginnings of each new arc is always a little slow, but is a wonderful respite from the amount of hype the ending before gave. The entire story was a roller coaster, one that I could not get off. It had me scared, it had me screaming, it had me crying, it even had me dying of laughter. Halfway through episode 3, I discovered a let's play channel by Mr250. There I discovered a wonderful community in live streams/comments that helped me understand/another perspective on the story. The story is definitely an unforgiving one. Without love, the truth cannot be seen. My friend who decided to drop the story before it became absolutely exceptional didn't have that love for the story and missed out greatly. One thing I noticed at the end was the fact that I loved every character, whether it be the "antagonists" or "side characters", they are all very special to me. I haven't found a similar story that could make me feel the same way for every character. If you are unable to read the VN, I'd also recommend reading the manga and checking out Goldsmith's youtube channel. He has videos of the various chapters from the manga but with the VN music/voices. The VN isn't perfect, it's long and verbose, but I don't regret reading it at all.

That's close to my experience. I complained alot about first arc for constant repetition, then complained second arc for being too boring for too long. Then the third arc came, and forever my life changed. Umineko asked really meta questions, from how we view literature, to how mysteries are written, to where are the heart for all of these. They didn't even give you all the answers in chapter 7, just so the person will continue to think about the story and the messages. It's crazy to me that the author was willing to put that much faith into his audience.

@@FFXfever I'm happy our sentiments were the same! On another note, please check out this parody someone made. It's an actual playable episode of Umineko with Tea Party and ??? included. It was so well done! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpWteXaLoq52bq8

I've been reading through the Wheel of Time series lately. Wikipedia has it at a word count of 4.4 million words. Almost four Uminekos! What am I doing with my life?

That's basically all of Homestuck (not counting the epilogues or Homestuck^2) with a couple hundred less words. Oh my god.

Keep in mind that Umineko in itself is just a subseries of When They Cry which includes Higurashi as well which is also REALLY FUCKING LONG! I'm pretty sure their combined length put most fantasy epics to shame

You should have mentioned Higurashi, if you want the full experience. lol

I made the mistake of speedrunning Umineko and by the end of the Question Arc (squeezed into just under 48 hours!) I realised "oh no. oh no, do I. HATE? this?" and sure enough, when I started the Answer Arc and even MORE batshit crazy plot twist-y stuff happened I confirmed that I hated Umineko and immediately stopped less than three hours in. The moral of the story: don't speedrun Umineko like I did, because the density of PLOT TWISTS and their velocity straight from the game text and into your eyeballs will render you numb and apathetic after a certain point. I might pick up Umineko again someday, when the resentment wears off some.

speed reading umineko is the worst crime you can commit, you have to take in what you're reading and think about it to understand the heart of umineko

Even 120H is not enough on vndb medium score is 147H. For me it will be even longer because I am not native in English. I expect that it will take me at least 4 months to finish it. 200H/14H/perr week=4 months. It will be my way to stay focus during my time working abroad to keep me sane.

I'll read it when I have the time. ...I mean, that's what I said about Mob Psycho and My Hero and I STILL haven't seen either of them past their first few episodes, but I swear I'll do it!

I think the best point to commit to this is when there is a weak anime season. It will carry you for months and if you are hooked you will get what most modern anime lacks, a good plot.

I'm reading through Higurashi no naku koro ni, and I've only made it through Ch.1. I'm about halfway through Ch.2, and enjoying it thoroughly. I'm aware there's still 2 chapters yet to be released in english, but I'll still be picking them up when they release, even if I don't get to it for another several years.

You definitely should. I went into Umineko thinking it was some kind of sequel to Higurashi but I was wrong (ish). I ended up loving it more than Higu.

Took me 5 days to finish episode 4, now on the next 5 phew BUT JESUS what a fantastic and interesting story. I feel like I'm being drugged by the adrenaline, I never read anything which actually made me burst out with energy, sadness, laughter, and pure madness and I'm only on ep 4. One thing tho, it starts SLOW, ep 1 may be the weakest but it is important, it is a good introduction to the characters and I respect that an actual day doesn't pass in mere minutes so I respect why it is slow. But each episode is better then the other one so yeah READ THIS, it is AMAZING AND PEOPLE WEREN'T KIDDING WHEN THEY SAID IT
