In this episode, we will evaluate Stringer Bell, from the Wire, in terms of how Machiavellian he may have been. He will be evaluated primarily, though not exclusively, through his dealings, most notably, Avon, Prop Joe, Omar, Brother Mouzone, Marlo and Clay Davis.

In summary, String demonstrated: + a willingness and ability to learn and adapt + ambition and a clear vision for improvement - inconsistent effectiveness in handling potential threats - arrogance regarding his own capabilities - indecisiveness about committing to either the street or legit life - blindness to the negative consequences of his actions - a crippling inability to read others

@@coolpeople4287 you have to think about attrition. They were at war . There's a unique view we have by being outside observers . But when your in wartime scenarios, attrition plays a huge part. I know this is a Machiavellian channel, but whenever I think about Stringer Bell, the Sun Tzu saying always comes to mind first... "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle". Stringer didn't know what he didn't know (thereby didn't know himself) and certainly had no clue what his enemies were thinking (didn't know his enemy), so his demise was inevitable. Keep up the great content.

What did stringer didn’t know? I think he thought everyone was all about the money which is what he’s about. Marlo was about his name and Omar was about the Game and respect
@guiness1100
@guiness1100 2 жыл бұрын
@@rasheemthebestfirstone3274 Stringer studied Macroeconomics (which is the study of how the economy works as a whole) whereas to make good decisions in the Baltimore drug game, he needed to understand Microeconomics (study of decisions made by individuals in a single market). So while he was educated, he was not armed with the right information. That is why I said, he doesn't know what he doesn't know. Then, Stringer "thought" he understood what motivated Marlo and Omar and what drove their decisions, but as you pointed out, he did not. So he did not know his enemy. That is why I felt the Sun Tzu quote was appropriate.

@@rasheemthebestfirstone3274He couldn't understand that not everyone is driven by money & money alone. He made the fatal mistake of not understanding his opponents. Stringer became a classic example of a self-hating social-climber. He wanted to be the academic, the property developer and still be at least a part-time gangster. Everything about him in the later episodes was about grand-standing & showing off - even the crew briefings in the Chapel, and the theatrical way he'd pull his glasses off (often when he wasn't even reading anything), it all reaks of hubris and ego. I can see how he and Avon would make a killing in the streets for real in their earlier days, but he's the classic example of throwing your brains out the window as soon as he make some money.

@@christopherayettey4390No but he went about it the wrong way. He was taking community college economic classes. Anytime he learned something he immediately tried using it to demean his subordinates. He himself didn't even know what absolved meant. Didn't think to have a separate office to conduct his real estate business & thought he could bribe his way into downtown real estate as a first year developer. He didn't even believe Clay conned him even after 9 other developers were granted permits & funds. Only when Levy mentioned the golden goose & the faucet did he finally accept that he was conned. He didn't see the red flag on only getting back 30k & after giving up 250k. A 220k loss wasn't a red flag to him. He even said the 250k like it was something to be proud of. Imagine being proud to say you spent 250k bribing a state's senator for a damn building permit.

I agree ,but the chain of command was flawed ,a two -man tier led to jealousy &treachery .Shamrock should have been partner #3 (consilgliere_not just a secretary general ) A lot would have been diffrent he would have been privy to inside info and not just relaying orders from Stringer when Avon was locked up . D'Angelo had the offer to reduce his years by snitching readily available. Especially if he told McNulty that Stringer was there when Brandon was picked up & personally delivered money to him & Wallace for the hit. He could've also snitched on their current on going dealings & the fact that it was actually Avon who caused the overdoses. But, he just wanted to be left alone & do his time. @@bullywhispers9544 after I saw this I did. l like the breakdowns of these guys. I commented in response to the title, before I watched this video, so I was in agreement when I watched. I stumbled on your channel about a week ago, and watched several character breakdowns since then. I enjoyed the Prop Joe breakdown. I think the thing with Marlo and him was that he didn't just genuinely take him under his wing to look out for him, he did two things that would've warranted death, when he set Marlo up (and let the supply get jacked). I don't think Marlo seemed disloyal to people who were truly loyal to him, from what I recall (maybe with rare exception in Michael, maybe). Marlo probably would've killed Joe himself if he'd known about the card game early on. I think Prop Joe not being enough of a lion was a very fitting description. It got me thinking... while Cheese was lowdown and slimey... if Joe would've been tougher - of course he might've killed, or disciplined Cheese at some point - but even if he wouldn't do that, if he were tougher, he might've supported Cheese in getting revenge against Brother Mouzone... whatever happened there. I believe he was genuinely trying to save his nephew, but maybe Cheese didn't see it that way - and maybe he held a grudge. It might've given him another excuse to betray his uncle, who he may have thought didn't care enough about him to back him up after he was shot. Maybe he felt less respect for Joe seeing he didn't show any sign of being a lion.

Avon didn't want Mouzone dead. If Stringer had effectively outed himself as wanting to rid of Mouzone, that meant Stringer had effectively outed himself as being insubordinate to Avon. Avon wasn't stupid. He would obviously take notice of that. Make no mistake. If Stringer weren't close friends with Avon, Avon would have had him dealt with without warning him about the mistake he made outing himself as the schemer to Mouzone. Avon was actually being nice by telling him he had effectively snitched on himself to Mouzone.
