Born into the oldest noble families of France, the House of Rochechouart, Madame de Montespan was called by some the "true Queen of France"' during her romantic relationship with Louis XIV. Her "reign" lasted from around 1666 when she first danced with Louis XIV at a ball hosted by the king's younger brother, Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, till 1677. She is an ancestress of several royal houses in Europe, including those of Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg. The reign of Athenais de Montespan as principal mistress of Louis XIV corresponds with the most glorious period of the Grand Siecle. Athenais was 'the true Queen of France' and symbol of a dazzling French culture in the seventeenth century. As a lover, she risked the disgrace of double adultery but as a patron she supported many of the leaders of the cultural renaissance including Moliere and Racine. The greatest beauty of her day, Athenais lived her life publicly and unashamed. Louis himself never believed she was a poisoner. She fascinates not because she achieved power at a time when it was denied to most women, but because she achieved that power through manipulation of a prescribed role.

Madame de Montespan was very pretty in her youth and when she was thin and very youthful for her time in her 50's. Its like she rose quickly and brilliantly then faded away into the background.

I do not think this is an ah ha piece; Montespan took the love of the King from other women that she EVENTUALLY turned into herself. And thus the circle of life continues. Her greatest accomplishments though were her 9 children. It is also impressive none of them died in childhood, being the 1600s
@micheleparker8553 Жыл бұрын
Royal children were not exposed to other people very much in infancy and early childhood. This greatly reduced their exposure to diseases. If they survived these early years, then they had better chances to live to adulthood when they were bigger and stronger to fight off germs.

@heliedecastanet1882 Жыл бұрын
