To answer your question about David Silva, at the time of the match Silva's newborn baby was born premature and was fighting for survival in hospital, Silva was a key player to the team but on leave obviously for the birth of his child. Pep was basically saying while the team couldn't do anything to help, the least they can do is play for him while he watches on in hospital and hope it helps him through the tough time. Thankfully the baby survived and is now healthy alongside Silva's girlfriend .

That edit is a little unfair (not your fault!) in that it's comparing Mourinho at his lowest ebb, with a team that just wasn't performing. I would argue that even Pep would struggle to get a good performance out of Dele Alli with no funds to replace him. Spurs were, and still are, a special kind of dysfunctional. Virtually every other team Mourinho has managed at, his former players speak about him with great respect.

I feel that Mourinho used to be a much better motivator, and one of his biggest strengths was enforcing an us vs them mentality within his teams. He has sorta got that back with Roma, but since the tail end of his stint at Madrid, he was in a me vs the world mentality and his coaching suffered because of it. I also think that Mourinho is actually more successful as an underdog, and has trouble coaching from a front runner position

Peps style is beautiful and effective and intense and as far as I’m concerned apart from his success at club level he also transformed and delivered world cups to Spain and Germany without coaching those national teams. However, over the years he’s had dismal showings as well, getting absolutely humiliated and embarrassed 4-0, 5-1 year after year by teams like Real Madrid who have speed and skill and are built to adapt and play any style. One thing I think pep has learned over the years is that if you remain dogmatic you will lose. He’s had to make his teams and style a lot more dynamic over time.

Tbf, you cant really attribute the wc for germany to him if you put into context bayern and dortmund were in the ucl final in 2012(bayern),2013, and the world cup was in 2014, a year after pep had joined that bayern team. And yeah is really interesting how he has made his team so dynamic especially over the last 6 years in the prem, compared to say likes of klopp who has more or less stuck to what he knows best.

@@marco_1909 Bayern and dortmund have been great clubs always, like Barca and Madrid. but that generation of german players had won nothing, their game was too direct. when pep and barca came around, teams around the world had to either adapt and play a new style of defense or add a possession element to their game and imitate their game, especially after being humiliated by them which bayern was. bayern did both and then brought guardiola on board in 2013 to finish the transformation. it's no coincidence the 2014 German team then won a world cup and that generation of players had redemption. spain and germany were both super cohesive national teams because they were basically just barca and bayern in national team uniforms. Low said in his WC post game press conference that the players were lucky to be coached by pep guardiola at club level. both of those national teams were transformed by pep's possession game.

Bayern won before him and after him. If they only won after him then you can argue that he left something there, but Bayern won the champions league a year before him. He went to a team that won everything the year before and won everything the year after. And the style of Germany was more direct like Klopp. In Spain they only won those years because they had a once in a generation talents.

Everybody has bad days, Jose, too when he was the Spurs manager. Recently, he said in an interview that the only team he managed and never got any feelings for was spurs. Both these guys are extreme end of spectrum on one end Jose on other the baldy. One is pure pragmatic football, and other is completely opposite. The best moment for Jose was when his team beat pep's Barcelona with messi in the barca team. The special one Jose and the Bald genius pep. And the funny part is Jose was not a coaching staff to start with he was a translator to begin with.

I wanted to share some food for thought, as I feel like in an effort of trying to understand what's going on you often end up oversimplifing the very deep and interesting dynamic of theese coaches. There are 2 types of coaches, the very idealistic conceptual xs and os type of coaches, and the more dressroom man-managers that are able to make situations and people thrive on a personal level. Guardiola is the quintessential xs and os type of coach, he grew up under the wide phylosophycal umbrella of total football, basically invented tiki taka at Barca and basically exported the same strategy adapting it and evolving it to fit his players and combat different tendencies, he constantly is at the forefront of tactical innovation and always has had loaded teams, meaning he can afford to focus his attention on posing problems to other coaches rather then worrying about what others will try to do to him. Mourinho, on the other hand isn't really the quintessential man-manager (Ancelotti is in my opinion), although his ability to make his players commit to very extreme jobs was iconic (Eto'o and Pandev basically played fullback under him) people forget that he was at the forefront of many football innovations. He basically moneyballed his way through 2 portuguese leagues a uefa cup and 1 champions league while also heavily revolutionizing training regiments, he's basically the coach that killed 4 4 2 in english football his first time at Chelsea and even tho his Inter team was known for its amazing defensive efforts, I remember how that team was absolutely capable of dominating possession if it was the actuall best way to win a game, also his Real Madrid was offensive as it comes. Guardiola always had the chance to design its own teams and develop them into powerhouses, that's his main strenght. Mourinho was mainly brought in into teams in an effort to elevate a single situation (Porto didn't win the league in the 4 years before Mourinho, Chelsea brought him in to establish a culture and a tactical identity to a team that was just injected with a load of talent, Inter milan was dominant domestically for a couple of years under mancini but it was with him that it became a european contender, Real Madrid couldn't break through Pep's Barca in the years that came before him). What I'm saying is: don't fall for the trap of thinking that a coach's identity ends with their playstyle, and as their coaching style goes remember that english isn't the first language of either of theese guys, a lot of stuff is lost in translation and some other is just misunderstood. Pep's past players and assistant coaches have been taking over barca, burnely, arsenal and many more using his style of play. We can clearly track how football was ggenerally played and players roles,pre gaurdiola and during gaurdiola era. For current generation of football I guess its recommended you follow him and his teams for super depth, cutting edge and unique tatical prowress. He redefined the role of goalkeeper in this era, cahnged role of full back from utility player to most important game controllers, false 9(deep playing striker), ball playing / forward playing centre-backs.

Jose coached Tottenham for ig 1.5 seasons and got them to the carabao cup final, in the same time a new league called European Super League (made by higherups of Barca, Real Madrid and Juve) was rising and top clubs wanted to join it for monetary reasons but the league was very bad for smaller clubs and would make the rich richer and no fan wanted such a league. Spurs owner Daniel Levy wanted to join but mourinho disagreed so he got sacked a week before the Carabao Cup final and Spurs being Spurs lost that match. Spurs remains the only club Mourinho couldn't win a trophy with.

Robson spotted Mourinho’s potential as a coach and made him his assistant when he was at Sporting, Porto and Barcelona. I don’t remember the exact quote, but Lampard told a story of how Chelsea were down at halftime in a big match. He said that he expected Mourinho to come in the changing room and lose it. Instead he came in and said nothing, just let his calmness speak. Then he said something along the lines of “we’re better than this, let’s go out and win.” And we won. His confidence was infectious. He was also famous for going keeping the heat off of his players by being controversial. If the team had a bad game he’d say something inflammatory to the press to make sure that the bad performance wasn’t the headline. Or if a player had a bad game or a bad run of form, he’d say “He’s the best (insert position) in the world” and just walk away.

Then there's Fatih Terim who is a father figure and a motivational beast, not necessarily a tactician. But he's a coach who if your team is playing like Leicester first half, you'll come out of half time like Man City. That's how good he could motivate. There's a reason when he was the coach of Turkish national team in Euro 2008, they were called "the last minute Turks". One of the best comebacks in football history was the game Turkey - Czech Republic which ended 3:2 after the Czech were 0:2 ahead. Scoring 3 goals in the last 15mins of the game. During the whole tournament, they did this comeback thing 3 times and almost a 4th time against the Germans in the semi final game, that was another amazing game to watch.

His fault isn't his quality just that he tends to plan in the short term (like 2-3 seasons at a time) and run into issues afterwards. Also it's super easy for clubs to fire and replace coaches while it's hard/expensive to completely renovate squads. Managers grt replaced all the time in top level football staying with one club for over 3 years at a time is an exception.

Ferguson practically married ManU. Most coaches will get terminated after not performing well for a year or two. Mourinho can usually get extension long enough for third year where he will come up with a trophy (or at least an excuse for the lack of a trophy). When he was at Real Madrid he had Valdano removed as a restructuring and consolidation of his power. You rarely hear of the behind the scenes administration changes. I think that has something to do with it

Jose requires full commitment from his players in order for his philosophy to work hence why he failed at Tottenham which wasn't his own fault. The team had no ambitions and were okay with being in the Top 4 but not 1st. Pep can be a lot more brutal and even fell out with many players.

When Mourinho won the CL with Porto, I started to support his teams. When Pep started to coach, I still couldn't watch the privileges of Barça. Mourinho showed how "smaller" teams could reach successes. Once Pep was at Bayern, I started to watch what he did. Where Mourinho couldn't use the talent of Lukaku and De Bruyne, + once at Real Madrid, it was difficult for me to keep cheering for his football Meanwhile Guardiola arrived at City. Yes, it's easy with the oil money. But hey, I'm not perfect either, so I can ignore that "detail". The football of Pep is really a good evolution for the sport. Worldwide, the games will become more crazy, especially if the dominating teams can't convert their possession into advantage. Let me explain and stop here: We have seen a lot of evolutions in football since Pep arrived in Man City. Even the world cup, with some surprising results, is also a proof. Doesn't matter if you're a big or small team, with Pep's principles, a team exactly doing what was planned, will normally always win. Guardiola came to barca to rebuild the team after rijkaard era, the majority of the team was from la masia , and he succeed, and brought barca dominated spain and europe, for example he dominated man united in 2 ucl finals, barca literally taught them play football with majority barca academy players. Santos had a young Neymar, right before he went to Barça, and Flamengo had Ronaldinho playing his last few good years. I think you watch Tottenham in Conte's era. Conte is a great coach, he is one of Juventus players in 90, he is captain for long time. ​@@lperea21 Well he didn't get fired from Inter or Porto, he won the Champions League with them and then moved to other clubs (Chelsea, Real Madrid) because he wanted to. I mean it might seem like he getd fored all the time if you compare him to Guardiola or Ferguson, but managing the same team for years is pretty rare in top football. Other top managers get fired all the time too. It's just a couple of clubs and managers that will keep together for 4-5+ years.
