Back when I started training the black belt actually meant something. There were maybe 3-4 in the state I live in. Even a purple belt was very rare. Now I'm friends with like 20 black belts, 2 coral belts and one red belt. Its not as special as it once was. Now people are giving their girlfriends black belts after 3-4 years of training, and no one save a rare few should ever get a black belt in BJJ in less than 10 years IMO. This is why it doesn't mean what it once did. Blue belts in 2001 were for the most part tougher than most purple and browns these days belts these days.

Totally agree! People are on things saying that „blue belts today are as good as Blackbelts 20 years ago“ and I‘m like: „Y‘all trippin‘?“ 20 years ago, a Blue Belt was ready for a Vale Tudo match and most Black Belts were clinically insane. Today we have two ways: 1 half is giving out Belts like candy and the other half is sandbagging their way to a blue belt „World Championship“
