Nice grafting. Here in southern California, I've 29 trees and 18 varities. For us GEM, and Lamb are much better than Hass, smaller trees and better production, as they do not alternate as badly as Hass.. Best of luck.

I HAVE TWO BACON AVOCADO TREES I grew from seed 15 years ago. Both are over 20 feet tall (I topped them to stop them from getting taller). I also, grafted Hass Avocado Scions onto both trees. Why? Because the Bacon is a Type B and the Hass is a Type A. Now I get so much pollination on the same tree. Which gives over 300 avocados per tree per season. 600 large avocados in total.

Just moved north to Palatka which is near the Georgia border. Do I need to forget the large south Florida avocados and look for more cold hardy California/Mexican varieties to plant up her

First, grow what you enjoy eating ... one way or another you will find a way to make it work (planting against a south facing structure, adding lighting around the tree, green housing, etc.). Second, if you want an easier carefree avocado tree, then I would recommend researching for a great-tasting cold hardy avocado tree variety. Every ten or so year, we do experience a strong cold front in South Florida; one of which had set my Hass Avocado tree back for 2 years before re-fruiting. From my observations of tropical trees, when the temperature reaches below 12-17 degrees Celsius, you can expect your tropical trees to start to scream at you. Hope these tips help you!

I think you’re from my tribe. I love to graft as well and currently have a few Monroes and Marcus Pumpkins. I don’t graft the Hass because I don’t like those puny little things, so I just grow them for my wife. I’m in Melbourne Florida. If you’re close, then let me know if you ever want to trade a Marcus or two for Halls. I don’t have the Hall yet and heard great things about them.

Honestly, I had the Hall for about 15 years now and it only set 1 fruit, which I didn't even get to taste. I would recommend against the Hall from my experience. I heard from the grapevine that getting avocado trees to set fruit north of Lake Okeechobee is difficult, idk your experience.

@@Achronaut Is that Hall grafted? My Hass and Marcus produce more avocados than I can eat - more than 100 lbs per tree, and they are about 15 feet tall. I just got my first Monroe this year. Avocados produce PLENTY here. I've even considered an avocado farm in Central Florida. Whoever said they have a hard time setting fruit North of Okeechobee was smoking something.

@@MasterKenfucius The Hall is grafted. I thought maybe the rootstock was defective. This year, I pruned it & fertilized it. It seems to be responding well perhaps it will flower now. I'm so glad to know that they can produce avocados there!

New subscriber. I would like to know if your hass avocados ripen evenly, and what poting mix you are using?

My Hass avocados ripen around October to December. They start to fall off the tree when they are ripe (and they don't bruise at all even hitting the ground). About 3 days later to a week on the kitchen counter, they are completely and evenly ripe for eating. For the potting mix, I just use 100% compost + cow manure. I put them in fabric grow bags for aeration and drainage. For irrigation, I use rainwater (but sometimes water from sprinklers as long as it doesn't hit the tree trunk), but mostly rainwater. I hope this helps.

How old are those big avacado trees in the ground?

Achronaut.....Why are you surprised that they're flowering? Isn't that the whole idea why you're grafting scions from mature tree so they bear fruit at no time? THINK....
