Omar Osman Outdated to say the least. My Dual Pentium Dell I got sitting in my closet can still perform great lol... Maybe do a project one day for fun with all my old components now that I've upgraded pretty much everything in my computer; throw in my old ASUS mobo and old Intel i7 870 w/ the last GPU i had which was the 8800gt I believe. Got some Corsair 12gb of DDR3-1333MHz since I upgraded that too... Hmmm; stealth computer. Dell on the outside, custom on the inside

Gilgamesh Sounds cool. I reccomend this: 1:oven paint the inside 2: grab a used 1st gen i7 to throw in 3. OC that GPU to the max! 4. Prob buy a Corsair Seidon 120 for 50 bucks just for fun.

It would be great if you could update this for 2014/2015. Now that all EA games are going to use frostbite 3. What would be the optimal number of cores. Am I going to see any benefit from getting a core i7 over an core i5. Does hyper threading make a difference? Are games optimised for hyper threading? Or should I go down the AMD route since the PS4 and Xbox one are running AMD, which means games are developed for those first and ported to PC

I7 aren't really necessary for gaming IMO unless you're recording gameplay a rendering videos and stuff of that nature a lot not much of a reason for one and you're better off getting an i5 If you're just doing strictly gaming i would go amd and here's why: *Although they're slower than intel but outside of synthetic benchmarks the performance is identical so realistically amd is beyond good enough *They're quite a bit cheaper, which for gaming is great it allow to buy a better gpu *Now that games are starting to support more cores amd chips have more appeal than they ever did *And like you said games will likely start being optimized for amd chip because of consoles (Please no fanboys attack me as i have used and enjoyed both and this is just MY opinion)
@frendiom
@frendiom 9 жыл бұрын
Tristan Hernandez Well then... 1. AMD is not slower than Intel, intel is more organized. There is a diffrence and AMD is not gonna be better than Intel if you go for the higher ups (which is necessary for FPS or physics based games) but thats because of hyper threading which is just organizing performance. 2. AMD is better because they are cheap yeah, but they also have good CPUs that are quite near in performance to the i7 if you go to their high up flag ship CPUs even without the performance increase from hyper threading. 3. Sadly, Intel wins on this one. Since they really have more logical cores than AMD, which is really just making one core work nearly as great as two but thats always great from intel to do this because it will make stuff better in the future. And yes Intel i7s are directed towards rendering and stuff... But it will have its use in gaming, mostly due to CPU reliant stuff that needs accuracy and order. Something AMD cant offer at the moment, or atleast not as good as Intel does. 4. No, it will not be more optimized towards AMD chips. Sure they will most likely optimize them more towards the AMD side due to the consoles. But that will only be on the console as their stuff is specially made for gaming 100% and as we all know consoles get a much better optimization so it might run horrible instead towards AMD PCs. We wont know until the future comes though. And im not a fanboy. Generally i like AMD more than intel due to them having good price to performance... But i have to be honest and not take a side in this conversation... Even though i think i did.

I've stuck with Intel for awhile and ever since I had my previous Intel i7 870 @ 2.93ghz I have been in love OC to 4.6ghz (keeping the core voltage to 1.26)and liquid cooled it with the best around (EK-H30 240 HFX Adv Liq Cooling Kit) I have never looked back. Loving all my new upgrades and how everything performs. Can't forget to mention my new mobo; the ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1 TUF series. Love the aesthetics of everything and my Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB /w a Seagate EXT HDD 2TB I got everything I need for now. Oh yeah and I just upgraded my old Corsair DDR3-1333MHz 12GB (3 sticks of 4GB each) RAM to 16GB of the Corsair Vengeance DDR3-2400MHz (2 sticks of 8GB each) just a little thing I could do in the mean time til I upgrade my 2GB DDR5 EVGA GeForce GTX 660Ti Signature 2 FTW Edition card to whatever is the best out when I want to upgrade it since I have everything else up to par, I don't feel like getting a GTX 970 and finding the correct water block for it :P Great video though for those who are considering what rig to build and what they need exactly, to play the games they want to play or do what they want to do.

I know this video is rather old but I think as long as consoles exist the number of cores will be dictated by consoles because devs will tend to care towards the console hardware since that's where most of their games will be sold and since pc's aren't all the same. So just go with the same number as consoles at least with the CPU but it also depends if the dev decides to even really do anything with pc other than a port.

thats why amd is the best choice for cheap cpus right now
@Salvo11
@Salvo11 10 жыл бұрын
mackiHL2 Agree. Both consoles use 8-core AMD's. 2 of those cores are used for stuff like video game DVR recording and voice commands / processing the Kinect / PS Eye (I think) so for gaming purposes, I think a 6-core AMD processor would be equivalent to the PS4 and Xbox One's processor. That said, it wouldn't hurt to get an AMD 8-core, the "lower end" AMD Octacores are still very cheap, and have decent power usage (not too power hungry). They're also still around twice the speed of the Jaguar cores on next-gen consoles. 1.6 and 1.75 ghz for the PS4 and Xbox is pretty damn slow.

Gilgamesh indeed, there's no specific vid about this. He did some comments on far cry 4 not launching on dual cores, crysis 3 eating up quad cores with no hyperthreading, same as bf4, etc. But, given AMD launching lots of underperforming quads (APUs, fx 4100,etc), games not accepting dual cores (intel dual core P300 something) and so on, i feel this vid needs a review.
@f4z0
@f4z0 9 жыл бұрын
I think i didn't understand your point. A lot of programs can and use up to thousands of cores. In particuar: Games like Crysis 3 have implemented certain pieces of code to perform on octa-cores. (Physics simulation on grass in example). But let's not talk about top performance but the minimum required. Games like Far Cry 4 don't even launch properly on dual core CPUs. Even the last Haswell 1150 Pentium Pwhatever that outperforms a Quadcore like FX 4100 in almost any other game (Linus himself said this). Just like this video showed Battlefield 3 not launching on a single core cpu. That's why i claim an update.
@f4z0
@f4z0 9 жыл бұрын
William Smith I think we are not understanding each other. The ammount of cores or threads ( when there are MORE cores /threads than required by the software) has nothing to do with game or program failure. The fail comes in the code. The game isn't which decides how many threads it uses. The OS is the one that manages the ammount of resources a certain program can use. About the Core/Thread ratio: remember Hyperthreading. Two threads each physical core. Threads are logical paths to perform a calculus. Cores are physical things. You can have a program that has hundreds of threads, if you have one CPU with one core (Pentium III) This lonely core has to calculate every thread one at a time. Pentium IV would do two at a time, a quad core can do four and a quad hyperthreaded can do eight. An octa hyperthreaded can do sixteen and so on. If the game was coded to create 4 threads, it will use four threads despite they being physical cores or two core hyperthreaded. The problem comes when a game is not designed to do a certain part with less than a minimum predefined. Similar to Server timeout when internet is slow, tecnically it can do it, but it has to wait so long than the program or OS decides to abort the process. Now about the "FX4100 good enough, without any noticeable lag" is a personal evaluation. Some people notice, other not, like 60Hz Vs 120Hz, Mouse acceleration, Graphical appealing, etc. Nothing to discuss here since we are two separated people with (probably) different perspectives about good enough and not noticeable lag.

@Lobos222 10 жыл бұрын
***** Sure, you might have that for 3 years, not 4-5, but thats besides the point I have. Because what I am saying is that quad core gaming isnt really standard yet and you thinking games, as in more than just a few, will be optimized, OPTIMIZED, for more cores than 4 until your current CPU is redundant isnt correct. I just bought a new computer. When that one is outdated and I am about to buy a new one. Then, maybe, more than 4 cores are used effectively. Even that isnt a given.

(part 2) at which point the cpu will throttle down to reduce the temperature before damage can happen so well, its up to you really... maybe one thing you can try is plug the CPU Fan to a normal motherboard header where it'll run at 100% all the time, it will be loud but technically speaking it should work better as the cpu fan header (main one) change the speed based on temps, adding an extra fan in the case can help too if you have one

The only problem with this is that the same cpu was used for all scenarios. You will need to actually find single core cpus and complete setups to give a really good demonstration about multi core cpus and how they operate under pressure in various games. I can tell you from experience that my intel core 2 duo did not perform anywhere near as well as my intel core 2 quad in battelfeid 3. The dual core (e8400) had to turn down many settings to get a decent frame rate in the same mobo cfg as q9650

The spec sheets are nearly similar to that of the HD 7770 toHD 7850 desktop variant but no clock rates has been revealed. Articles today have revealed this much and it is confirmed. Very interesting results, I had thought an i5 would be the sweet spot for games. Things _may_ change the the next couple of years with console ports coming in that could utilize more cores. But on a very tight budget, I'm sure an i3 has well would perform pretty well with something like a 750ti or R9 270, maybe in future just having to knock settings down to 900p etc like the XB1

With the next generation game engines starting to come out now(and dx12 not that far of), i hope we'll start to see some utilisation of our quadcores, i mean it's about time. And hopefully we'll also start to see game engines take advantage of hyperthreading. So yeah i'd definitely recommend i7 with 4+ cores and hyperthreading.

Pretty sure the higher clock speeds of most above average/gaming PC's CPU's can make up for the overhead of less than 8 cores and the typical overhead of Windows OS/Programs/Steam/anti-virus/etc, and still maintain the same or better performance factor as long as the game is optimized for multi-platform use/Windows only use at some basic level or higher. Specifically the game engine.

its always hard to decide, even if you're not a budget because then the saying goes " too many choices is like not having enough " anyway dont worry about bottlenecks unless you're paring 3 years difference hardware, and well its a very good choice for budget, if i was in your situation i'd be asking myself "how long will i be on a budget?" because cpu-upgrade-wise from the 6350 will be the 8350 which isnt that much of an upgrade for gaming (part 1, stupid characters limit)

I have an i5 my friend has an i7. We both have gtx 680 (well he has 2 but we used one for this) no noticeable diffrence from HT. There are some games that like to use the CPU. But with a high clock speed like 4.6ghz again no noticeable diffrence.

Consumer costs and manufacturing costs are vastly different. Don't forget that Microsoft and Sony mass produce, where most PC setups are built from consumer pricing.

Yes, it would make sense. Although if you wanted to save yourself some money you could go with a fast dual core IE- a fast I3, but if you want to really future proof yourself then go with something like an Intel Core I5-3570, Clocked at 3.4Ghz and a socket 1155 chip so it will fit on your motherboard.

as far as my knowledge goes, that driver is useless unless you're already on Nvidia card and i believe its bundled with any of the newest nvidia driver, if a game use physx in any shape, it will run on your CPU unless that game engine has the right ($) to use the hardware accelerated physx (running on the GPU) but then the game is locked to windows only and performance wise it isnt that bad on a CPU, many games engines uses physx without HW rights, used for colliders, rigidbodies, etc by the CPU

A game I really wanna play is Guild Wars 2, and when I mentioned using an AMD CPU in a build before, everyone on the Guild Wars 2 forums said that it would be a bad choice, for that game at least. I'm not bothered about max FPS. As long as I can get 30's on medium settings, then I'll be more than happy. You think this'll (the i5 and Sapphire) be enough?

And on the bench marks more CPU cores didn't give much performance 1 core lacked FPS because the usage would be really high. Thats why you upgrade graphic cards for gaming that involves graphics

While it's true most games are single threaded, the OS they run on is not. By having more than 1 processor core allows the game and the OS to run with out having single core slow down issues.

just set your multiplier to 34 and try to get the FSB to 103 to have a round 3.5ghz, then decrease your memory frequency back to its original 1333/1600mhz and set its voltage to [manual] at 1.5v (Memory voltage, not cpu!) with that your memory wont get damaged, your cpu will be at the max "overclock" you can give it and nothing else will be affected

i am seeing whats going on. Developers got very lazing now on coding but its ok to make games simplier since major company's are heavy depending on game engines thats based on John Carmack ledgendary game programers ideas to disconnect from Microsoft TOOLS, we are seeing amazing graphics without the need of having DX11 since everything can be ported on any OS that utilize OGL4.1 or 4.5 those are features of the next gen OpenGL graphics that are easy to program now Thanks to opensource community that made it possible and cheaper than Microsoft....These ideas are benefiting on AMD CPU's architect of module processing even though Intel is faster than them but this competition never aimed on better single core threading architect but mostly multi-threading tech

If you use something like CPU Z it will tell you that you have physical and virtual core. Virtual cores are hyper threaded cores.

yes it can it should use about 57% to 87% of all cores. you will be fine with a quad core amd cpu. i use a amd 6 core and while running bf3 uses around 50% of all the cores.

So an i3 has 2 physical cores and thats it and then an i5 has 2 physical cores but with 2 threads per core making it basically a 4 core processor and finally an i7 has 4 physical cores and then 2 thread per core. Is this correct?

Amd athlon 2 x2 270 (dual core 3.4ghz) lags for me on BF3 in medium settings. The processor is the worst part in my computer. Why did he say dual core is enough? I have an AM3 socket and i'm gonna change to a Amd FX six-core 3.5ghz. I have 4gb ddr3 and 1gb gpu. My question is will bf3 run at ultra settings after processor swap?

I'm running i7 960 clock speed 3.2ghz, currently have a gtx 480SC, but thinking of upgrading to 680SC. Question I have is, will my cpu be good enough to utilize the gtx680, I'm not going to OC my cpu, as I got no idea how to do so, and trying to follow any guides on how to do so just confuses me and not going to do it. So is it worth upgrading to a gtx 680SC with i7 960 at stock speed.

Obviously lol. I just stated i have an i3. Mine also has hyperthreading. But the most programs thing only supporting 2 cores is'nt entirely the full story. At the time depending on the applications your going to run, 2 cores may be fine. But give it a few years when most applications utilize quad, hex, and oct core configurations by default, you will be kicking yourself that you thought that. Its one side to think in the present, but its a completely different side to think in the future.

one of the main reasons I decided to build my new PC. I looked at the AMD CPUs and while they do win in a couple situations, the 3570k won more, and cost less when comparing AMD's competition - (the 8350) - at least for the price I got them at. If someone isn't by a microcenter, well, then that's one thing, but I have one right down the street.

Man your wrong you can still over clock CPU with locked multipliers. You just lower the RAM frequency and increase the FSB. You then also increase CPU voltage and CPU, Mother board North bridge to ensure that it wouldn't crash because it a high clocked north bridge. You can also under clock your RAM timings and increase the voltage of RAM if it goes over its original specs.

What about onboard graphics memory (video card) for full HD gaming (22"-24" monitor)? 2GB or 3GB? Also is a 3930k/4930K (or similar future cpu) complete overkill if I mostly do gaming, web design and computer programming? I plan to overclock my pc as well.

take the i7-4770k and overclock it, currently the cpus for 2011 socket are one generation behind, therefore they are pretty unattractive for their way higher price.

Not all games are developed for the consoles. Some are actually PC ports. You can build a $500-$600 PC that can easily outdo console performance on all games that have been ported.
