Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzbin.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

When walking the bank, I almost always just bring one MH Baitcaster. Sometimes I bring another Spinning rod, but mostly just the one and my backpack When out on my Kayak, I bring 4 rods. 3 Baitcasters and one Spinning. One Heavy for Frogging and Punching, one MH for Texas Rigs, one Medium for Open Hook lures, and then the one Spinning with 8 or 10 pound Floro for more finesse type lures.

What got me into trouble early on was targeting multiple species in a single outing. I’d bring all this kit for my kids and I hoping to catch whatever we could, e.g., bass, catfish, carp, panfish, etc., and come home frustrated. Not sure if anyone else struggles with this, but maybe that’s worth a VLOG.

I have no rhyme or reason, sometimes I bring 3 or 5, sometimes I bring just one. Like the time I was using a really small hardcore minnow jerkbait. All I used was my spinning rod, and caught a ton, over a week long bite fest. Now, here I am this morning fishing an online tournament, and I have 8. So it's all preference. Awesome vid!!! Hi Debo. Good topic. You are correct, that there is no right or wrong answer to this one. I usually take three combos, mostly to cover the water column like you mentioned. My confidence set up is a medium spinning combo with a weightless trick worm, so I always have that with me. If I’m checking out a new pond, and I’m going to fish fast and keep moving, I’ll bring just one “search lure” of some sort, and my backpack with other lures/baits to switch to if needed. As always, thanks for helping us bank anglers. You consistently put out great content that is both fun and educational. Kudos to you!!

Debo. IMHO great breakdown in 1 vs a few combos. New angles gain confidence may be the best experience learning how their tackle is used properly and what work for them. And the many advantages to having the ability to cover bottom, mid-depth and top water. And have that quick more finesse bait to follow up a miss blow up. The only disadvantage I have taking a few rods is properly carrying them without accidently snagging a rod in trees or like you forgetting a rod. Searching a bank spot can be a hassle carrying a few rods. But IMHO having at least 2 combos nice because anyone can blow that line on a real. Or having the ability to adapt to what the Bass want. In heavy cover vs more open water. So I usually have 2 rods and sometimes 3 rods.

Excellent explanations. Personally I carry a Minimum of 2 combos when bank fishing. 1 baitcaster and 1 spinning, most days I take 3, the last one being another baitcaster. Reasons most you mentioned, covering water column, if one combo blows up I have backups, can’t use baitcaster for some finesse presentations. The last reason is one you didn’t mention. If i take one combo all of that cutting and re-tying wastes a lot of line.

Great video as always, and I totally agree. One combo probably best for beginners. Beyond that, for pond bank fishing, 4 is my bare minimum (2 spinning, 2 casting) if for no other reason than to have a backup for each. But I also get really impatient fishing with less than that many rods rigged and ready to switch baits. That is in comparison to minimum of 6 when I'm boat fishing.

Excellent advice as always. I agree with the three bait casters for three layer fishing plus a spinning rod for finesse fishing. I also am guilty of bringing all my gear but it stays in the truck 'after' the rods are rigged biased on the water conditions after i get to the spot. I also bring everything as the closest fishing spots are two hours drive away so i like to be prepared. Please keep up these wonderful videos.

All, enough said. I usually keep 3-5 in my car and just swap as needed, or I force myself to stick with one lure and practice it. On my Kayak I usually max out at 5 rods so this allows me to fish the entire column with various styles without having to retie on the yak.

Occasionally, if I'm just going down to the pond for maybe an hour or so I'll take one or two combos but most of the time I now bring five with me: two spinning and three casting. I'll mix and match as needed, but in general I have finesse presentations on the spinning rods and then set up my casting rods to have one for things like jigs and Texas rig/flipping, one for lures like spinnerbaits and chatter baits, and one for treble hook baits. I don't mind and it doesn't take me much time at all to retie, but I just like having multiple combos on hand so I can prepare them the night before with what I plan to use and then get a quick start covering all levels of the water column without any downtime between baits.

I personally use 3-4 combos. One spinning for finesse, a heavy frog rod, and two baitcaster on med heavy... one for my confidence bait(Texas rig)on a good sensitive rod and one for treble hook baits or anything where sensitivity dont matter. I always bring all 4 combos although frog rod and or spinning rod will stay in the car depending on situation but they are there "just in case". I do use the Rod Mule to transport combos, makes life easy lol.. I guess I just prefer to have thing tied on ahead of time and if something not working I can switch baits without having to retie a lot. When I had just one with me I wanted to try too many different things and spent more time retie than actually fishing lol

I only have 2 combos and use those two, I only had 1 combo before a company offered to give me one to try out and keep, my saying when it comes to rods is, one as a fisher, in the beginning, medium-medium heavy, as you get more advance and find some rigs that you like the most, get a rod specific to that. I got into fishing with one rod a medium fast action, now I've keyed in on finesse fishing, so I only have 2 rods and use only one, I plan on only using that one rod and plan on using it until it breaks, plus I don't have a job so that's me. But that's just me, IDK what everyone else has to say but would like to learn more.

I decided to simplify my gear and bought a second spool for line both fluorocarbon, and braid as (when I was fishing freshwater) we had bass, northern, and pike in the river and you could never really tell what you where going to see. Oddly enough my fluorocarbon was only 6lb's and I used it for really finesse baits and rarely if ever would I get broken off as it was basically all fish in the 2-3 pound range on it.

I almost always bring three to cover all bases at once (and because I can't use more than 2 at a time legally), I use a heavy spinning combo with cutbait/corn for catfish/carp and a baitcaster for some medium/heavy lures and an ultralight spinner for my little inline spinners and jigging. So far it serves really well for just having the options. Without the money to buy a ton of different ones like you said, I have only a few combos but make them versatile. I have only spent maybe 100 dollars total on combos, and the majority went to my baitcaster.

For me, it depends on what I’m trying to do. If it’s new water, I tend to take a med. spinning combo and my MH bait casting to give me more options to find what pattern works. If it’s an area where I know what patterns work best I may only take one combo. Sometimes I only take one combo to force myself to use certain lures to find ways to work the lure and hopefully find a pattern that works and gain confidence in different lures/presentations. In many cases, the places I fish have parking far away from where I have to walk to the bank and many of the “ponds” are actually small lakes or reservoirs. I always struggle to maintain a light load yet keep as many options available with me. I have carried an additional rod at times for the follow-up cast but haven’t had much luck with that... yet. I’m seriously considering a backpack style tackle bag to make bank fishing easier , but haven’t quite found one that suits my needs. Should we develop one together?!

If I really don't know what it'll be like, I'll pack a few extra rods and might even carry my BFS Aldebaran. I used to single carry the Zodias/Vanford for a nice all around. I'm usually limited on time and the more time I have to fish the more fun I have. The only setup I want is one for frog fishing. I just got into really serious bass fishing a couple of years ago and I've never bought a frog rod. Most of my fishing is done close to my SUV so I can bring more setups.

I am mostly new but I bring 2. I think 2 is all I really want to deal with to stay mobile. I just take a finesse spinning combo and a heavier casting combo. The disadvantage for sure is changing baits. I accidently used my finesse rod as a walking stick once...

Great video. I am a total newbie and I bring a couple combos because I’m trying to find my confidence lures. It’s great to switch up and learn all that I can each time my son and I get out!

Great analysis, I prefer 3 rods when I go pond fishing, but like you say some days after work I grab just one and hit it hard for an hour or so. As long as I’m fishing that’s all that matters!!

Sometimes I go out the door with one combo because I want to fish with only 2 or 3 types of lures. I also go with 2 or 3 combos set up with different baits. They may all be in hand as I get to the water, or I might leave the extras in the car if it’s close.

MH 7 Fast, pretty much the all terrain rod if I need to go quick. Squarebills lipless and can throw a jig on it if need be. Having a “go” box helps too to travel light, just keep a few of everything in it.

I take two. One spinning combo for finesse and some top water. One bait caster combo for crankbaits and the rest.

I usually take 2 combos because I do multi species things. I use a American hero bait caster and a cheep 2 pice 7 foot medium heavy and that dose the job for most thing like spinner baits and even weightless Texas rigged worms. Then I bring a fencing mediums light 7 foot with a Shimano Sedona 2000 size for my ultralight or bluegill fishing. It has worked for a few years for me and I waver on the less is more for rods.

For other beginners like me, bring a spine bait, everything will bite it, I've caught anything from a half pound bass to a 2.5 pound bass and even a 4 pound Crappie

I carry 4. 3 baitcasters and 1 spinning. My wife use to think it's too many but she now brings 3 herself! After she watch how easily I move from one lure to the next while she retieing. Lol She understands now.

I always need 3; one for top water, one for subsurface hard baits , and one for finesse soft plastics.

Right now I have a light/med spinner for finesse/ned rig stuff, a med/heavy fast action spinner for texas rigging or dragging a jig, and a med/heavy bait caster for my mid level and top water stuff. I want to get med/heavy-heavy power bait caster with a high ratio reel for flipping and punching and I'll be good for a while.

I think the 3 combo's for top mid and bottom makes alot of sense. First, no one rig does it all. For soft plastics or finesse lures, I go to a spinning rod and reel. Crank baits and other heavy lures, bait casting. Second, you don't want to burn your day changing lures. You've waited for the perfect day. Perhaps travelled a distance to get there, launch your boat and get going. Why burn additional time retying lures. Third, you can easily switch out on the same spot. Why work a lure that's not catching fish when you can offer some options.

I used to be 1 rod. My Shimano spinning combo I bought 27 years ago when I was 10. Now that I’m all grown up at 37, I’ve graduated to 2/3 combos, depending on where I’m fishing. As you said in the vid, 1 topwater, 1 for jigs/swimbaits and 1 for finesse. I’ve got a snap on the finesse bc it’s currently being used for hardbaits but will remove the snap if I switch to finesse. I really appreciate the fish talk vids. I’ve learned a lot from your channel. I know you may think that others know more, and they may but I haven’t found any other content creator that has taught me new things. So thanks man!

I’d say two is a great start. One medium action rod and a medium heavy rod. That’s my preferred method. Sometimes I’ll take a third.

Best Advice: Stop drinking five Monsters and put the money in a jar for a baitcaster! LOL. Seriously, great advice for beginners and experienced anglers. Another great vid. I mostlly bank fish and won't bring more than 3 rods with me. If I'm at a spot where i can park my truck close by i'll bring a few others.

I have graduated to exact rod actions to exact reel ratios per technique. I run an egg snap on my crankbaits even the big boys. But I remove the split ring on the bait. This is how most Japanese angler fish most moving baits.

I only used 1 for awhile but now I take 3 combos, 2 baitcasters and a spinning rod. I need to find a new place to fish. 5 fish this year vs 21 last year. did finally catch my first fish on a lipless crankbait. lucky if it was a half pounder.
