I harmonized C scale. The 7th chord is Bm7 flat5. In order to make it I found I made a Dm chord with a B note on the bottom. Tried it up the neck. That works. I found several extensions were partial or full chords with a different bottom note. They get easier to understand that way.

Well worth including into the family Diminished Major 7 (e.g. B D F A#).
@christopherheckman79574 ай бұрын
I was wondering whether that was an actual chord and whether it's used. The minor version of that chord (B D F# A#) is known as the minor/major7th or the Hermann chord or the Psycho chord or the Hitchcock chord (because composer Bernard Herrmann used it in Hitchcock's movie "Psycho".)

@@christopherheckman7957 Yes just at a quick look, the chord naturally appears in both Eb Harmonic minor (Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb D Eb) and Gb Harmonic Major (Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Ebb F Gb). It would be written enharmonically as (Cb D F Bb and Cb Ebb F Bb) in those cases.
@christopherheckman79574 ай бұрын
@@ifiwasyouiwouldntbe I wouldn't say "naturally", rather "harmonically"; the 7th chord built on Cb is Cb Eb Gb Bb, because a 7th chord on C-something has to consist of C-something, E-something, G-something, and B-something.
@ifiwasyouiwouldntbe4 ай бұрын
@@christopherheckman7957 The chord occurs naturally "inside" the scale, you can use harmonically if you rather. I was just pointing out the corresponding scale tones to B D F a# would you preffer Cb Ebb Gbb Bb? as that is not how those degrees are labeled in those scales. You will still have the same issue enharmonically with d# harmonic minor (d# e# f# g# a# B c##) and f# harmonic major (f# g# a# B c# D e#). i.e. (B c## e# a# and B D e# a#). The chord B D F a# still exists in there though. Although the more I listen to it the more it just sounds like a BbM(b9) chord.

@@ifiwasyouiwouldntbe It's there, but it's not technically a 7th chord.

Very interesting. As a bass player, these are interesting to play as arpeggios. I do have this question: when is a diminished chord best used in a song? Perhaps a follow-up video where to add chords to make compositions more interesting would be a good topic. Thank you.

They're useful to use as secondary diminished for key changes and also for chord substitutions using tritone substitution
@christopherheckman79574 ай бұрын
Using an arpeggiated diminished chord would not be complete without looking at Metallica's "Fade To Black" modulation kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4K9qIOvodGsobs (This video is also by an Italian who has some problems with English pronunciation. 8-) ) As mentioned in another reply, a diminished chord wants to resolve to a major chord one step up and can establish the tonality like a dominant 7th does. This is because of the presence of a tritone. However, a fully diminished 7th (o7) has two pairs of tritones, and it is not always clear what the root should be. This means you can take modulation to other keys in an unexpected way. (The Beatles used this trick a few times.) For instance, if you're in C major, the Bo7 means you can resolve to the keys of C major, Eb major, Gb major, or A major.

@@MusicTheoryForGuitar A modified dominant chord. First, you build the dominant 7th (1 3 5 b7), then you flatten the 5; this is a 7b5 chord. If you start with a diminished triad (1 3 b5) and add the b7, that's a diminished 7th. There's more than one way to get to the same chord in terms of pitch classes.

@@christopherheckman7957 Chords are classified in famillies. It's not just a question of how formulas can be interpreted, it's more a question of how the whole sounds. In this respect, 7b5 is a dominant chord.
