"maybe be surprised at how generous god is in his mercy"....goosebumps and misty eyed right now..yesterday for the first time in 23 years i went to confession...it was in a small room in the priests house we were face to face..2 chairs oposite each other..i was slightly overwhelmed as i remember the little dark box with the sire mesh that i could hide behind..but this was open..bright...2 chairs facing each other..i prepared him for what i was about to say and the lenght of time i was away and why i also havent had the eucharist since 1999..he told me take your time..literally name everyone and everything thats stoppping you..so i did..it was the strangest thing ever..i obviously wont go into detail..but after i finished..i looked over and his head was slightly bowed and he then looked at me and almost said verbatim what bishop barron just said...be surprised at how generous god is in his mercy..almost word for word...im kinda shaking here while typin as the timing is a but strange...today im going to mass actually in 2 hours time.and will partake of the eucharist first time since the the 20th century..(1999) to be exact...its strange...im a bit nervous..but...i surrender...weapons down...

As a mother I have five adult children, I have had serious problems with some of my children. I've had to put down boundaries to protect myself, because of their behaviour due to addiction, but if someone said to me you can be assured that only three of your childten will be saved,I want all my children to be saved they're all my children. We are all Gods children, I ifeel he would be upset if we only thought of ourselves as being elevated to being worthy of salvation He wants and loves all his children if we truly love him and know him we would understand that. It hurts and grieves him to lose even one of his children. Iam feeling this from the heart of a parent.

For those struggling with this, I offer this analogy (knowing full well that no analogy is perfect!) in light of the fact that I am a principal of a high school that enrolls students at risk of dropping out: I hope that every single student that I enroll will graduate. Do I tell every enrollee that I am certain that they will graduate? No! We lay out a plan for every student and if the plan is followed then they will graduate. So, my HOPE that every student will graduate is well founded but I would never say with certitude that every student will graduate. I have seen the most recalcitrant students "turn it around" and graduate! In a similar way, our Church encourages us to hope and pray that everyone is saved, but that doesn't mean that our Church claims with certitude that everyone will be saved. All of us sinners, even the most recalcitrant ones, can be saved...and we have permission to hope for that! Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. God bless!

Great analogy. Just want to drive it one step further. Have you ever engaged in any in-depth discussion with a general audience in your school on your HOPE that every student will graduate? Do you expect such a lecture to motivate an average student to “strive” harder in his study? Or, will it give a student a sense of false security that he will then spending more time in his games? Even at a time when you talk to one of the most recalcitrant students about his HOPE to graduation, I bet your message to him is on how to “strive” harder. You will not leave room for him to interpret the HOPE as an illusion that he may HOPE that his principle will not look at his test score at his graduation. I am sure Bishop Barron is not preaching a passive HOPE.

Thank you for clarifying the use of “hope” vs. “expectation”. My concern for the eternal souls of my family and friends is based on my own fear of not being worthy of salvation. Pray that one day I could accept the fact that salvation only comes through the grace of God and no one is ever truly worthy. @@zinaj9437 Indulgences have nothing to do with salvation. They are strictly tied to those in purgatory who are guaranteed of heaven. Indulgences shorten the time in purgatory for you, or for someone else. Your indulgence could release a soul into purgatory...and that soul will now pray for you as a saint- for you to be a saint. @@G-MIP - There's no time in purgatory. Once you die, you are no longer a temporal being, bound by time. Purgatory is the clean up phase when people work on releasing...habits, biases, propensities...that make them unfit for heaven. Purgatory is where souls learn to see as God sees, think as God thinks, and love as God loves. If they didn't learn and practice that on earth, they will need to work on that while in Purgatory. That, by itself, is an indulgence, God continuing to work with you to make you ready for heaven.

Outstanding video - thanks for teaching us. I’m going to throw something out there. Nobody needs to swing at it. I am a convert to Catholicism from Protestantism. I was not invited to mass until I was 37 years old. I was in RCIA within the month. I had asked several people throughout my life if I could attend mass. I was met with the identical answer every time: “You can’t take communion!!” It was said aggressively - almost angrily. Every single time. Every single person. I had no idea what they were talking about, but it was easy to tell they didn’t want me there. I think a corollary to “How many will be lost?” Is “How many will be lost due to our own negligence or hostility as Catholics?” We have the greatest faith in the world! Why aren’t we overcome with excitement to share it? I think the answer is also in the readings today: The spiritual works of mercy are expected of us as children of God. But we will get kicked in the teeth for it. Nobody gets mad when you hand them a meal. But when you try to save their souls, “at the time, discipline seems a cause not for joy, but for pain.” It’s discipline for us too as we face the inevitable backlash. What I’m saying is that instead of attacking each other about how many will be saved or lost, maybe we should be doing the work Jesus gave us to do: to go out and make disciples.

Very interesting Ira you converted to Catholicism. I do not even consider myself Protestant, I attend a non denominational church Calvary Chapel. I am born again, Jesus said we must be if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven. I say interesting you joined because it is all very religious in the Catholic church. The Pope and bishops all wearing their big hats and robes (like the pharisees), and people almost seem to worship to papal. But the bible teaches we only worship God, in fact many times in scripture people bowed down to angels and they said stand up do not worship us! Paul's entire ministry was teaching we are justified by faith alone! True living faith that is (James 2). The bible clearly teaches we are saved by grace alone thru faith alone in Christ alone! I reach out to you in love! Many Catholic people I know do not like the Pope, so I wonder why are you Catholic? Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved! Not sure if you attend confession but the bible teaches there is one God, and one mediator between God and man the Man Christ Jesus! We confess our sins directly to Him! And He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins! Wow I can go on and on but I won't. Not even sure if you will read this! But it is sad that so many religious people bag on Protestant, not that you did but adding to God's perfect Word other things needed for salvation. For by grace you have been saved through faith, not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works les anyone should boast. Because our good works are as filthy rags! Much love!

@@Hokum48These are all very common objections to Catholicism. While I am sympathetic to the place of faith from which they come, they are all grounded in misunderstandings. The clearest example is that we do not worship the Pope. If you are truly interested, you can find all the answers to your questions in many places online or in apologetics books. I am Catholic for many reasons, but the idea that got me started down this road to conversion was the idea of apostolic succession. I encourage you to read about it. I had been blest to have been mentored by a spiritually saintly lady for 33 years. At the time of our accidental meeting in 1983, I was an atheist - a Marxist, Lenninist in persuasion - and suffering from an aggressive brain cancer that has metastasized throughout my body. Brief, I barely had 3 months to live. The said Lady, it turned out, was a fiercely Marian Catholic and through her guidance, I received direct healing from the Blessed Mother who actually opened my brain and cleansed it of all "debris." In the ensuing 3 decades, I held on to my "ego" but the said mentor continued to guide me and point me to the Way (Jesus), not through words but more through her humble deeds and her stories about heaven, purgatory and hell, among others. Some of the nuggets of her teachings resonate with your teachings as well, Dorothy, the quiet worker, passed on in 2016 but most of the words she told me prior to her death - about what the world will be or what events will transpire after she's gone - are turning out to be true. I have since her passing, relinquished my ego, went into a daily practice of contemplative meditation and have become ever more vigilant against the onslaught of evil.

Bishop Barron says that “there are many opinions about this matter”, and yes is true, many have opinions about it, the problem is that Christ himself responded to this matter in Matthew 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”

Yes that is the traditional understanding. The explanation from Bishop Barron is very strange and sounds extremely permissive.

This, by Christ's own words there has to be at least one person in Hell (and traditionally it is held that there is one traitor almost certainly there). I think in some way we all wish that Hell was empty and that every soul could come to a state of grace by the moment of their death but to hope is a fools hope judging by scripture. The same way I don't like Barron's "privileged way" argument. Extra ecclesiam nulla salus is part of the magisterium. Nobody is saved apart from the Church. Anyone who is saved at the moment of their death is saved by the merits of the Church and is part of the Church for at least that one brief moment. While we should pray for that grace for everyone outside of the Catholic Church we should not just be content in them staying outside till their death. Granted how we go about that is obviously a matter of great prudence and I'm the last to say we should go around street preaching about damnation to every single person, I'm still working on getting my mom into the faith and I don't think the best way is just to say "Hey mom Extra ecclesiam nulla salus is infallible".

Sin of despair - all justice and no mercy. Both sin against the theological virtue of hope. The solution lies in Our Lord Who is the perfect unity of both Justice and Mercy.

Because it's actually an uncharitable position to hold. It causes you to let down your guard, to be less concerned about the salvation of others because "hey, I hope they will be saved and therefore I don't have to try as hard to evangelize them." It promotes complacency and indifference, as opposed to true concern and Love for your brother.

Bishop, yes "hope". Oh I loved this sermon on a number of levels. I've seen the scathing criticisms of you but this sermon gave me the best context to your heart. When I first heard Bishop Barron make that comment about hoping all be saved, I took it in the context he just described. Basically my thoughts were we hope that people will repent and be saved not that we hope the good and bad will be equally saved, no. I pray for the unchurched and the unbaptised daily due to no fault of there own have grown up in environments where God and religion is not talked about or encouraged. I know of many in that situation. God is not bound by His sacraments and can show mercy and forgiveness to anyone who has the grace and good will to ask for it. Yes evangelisation is important etc to spread the gospel and truth but I never limit the mercy of God on anyone, even the most hardened sinner before his or her final breath would murmur or even think the words " please God have mercy on me, a sinner". That person is assured mercy and will not enter hell. God will purify that person's soul and they will sooner or later enter heaven. It's not called the good news for nothing. I guess the key is to do our best to love as God wants us to love and continue the battle against sin in our lives and if we fall, and we will, seek that forgiveness with all sincerity. That I believe is how we walk towards heaven. God's grace does the rest.

Thanks so much for this, Bishop Barron! I find your explanation very clear. You know, I read Ralph Martin's book some years ago, and it begins to appear to me that your positions are closer than might initially appear. Here's a question, if I may. You helpfully note that expectation is not the same as hope. I may, for example, hope for enduring world peace over centuries while realizing that it's not something I actually expect. If hope for the salvation of all is like that, then would it be right to say, in your view, that it functions as a kind of ideal that I realize, in all likelihood, will not materialize in it's fullness? That is: I realize it's highly likely that some have indeed been damned and will be damned, but I still pray and hope for the salvation of all, where this likely means, as many as possible? I that makes sense. Thank you SO much for your amazing work for souls. I'm grateful for all you do. God bless.

In my experience, only those people who from a very prideful position are very assured of their own salvation and have set themselves apart as among the elect are almost gleeful in the idea that many or most are damned. Among those I can say, as a Catholic, that some of my Calvinist friends are among them. They delight in the Sovereignty and Justice of God without considering very much the Mercy of God. I think it's important to hope for these difficult things, understanding that from observation a minority of people seek to enter through the narrow gate. I see it differently. The people who want others to understand most people go to hell do so out of hope they will convert to Catholicism and lead good lives, not because they (or me personally) believe we are saved. It is the truth. And it is what will lead to better outcomes for more of us. This watered down hippy Christianity opens the door to accepting more sin because we can just be saved automatically because we think Jesus Christ's mercy saves everyone and no one goes to hell. And ultimately that is exactly why these Vatican II council heretical "priests" promote these things - because they also promote acceptance of homosexuality and things like fornication. They are normalizing mortal sins to get lead more souls to hell.

I love this. When I first heard Bishop talk about this topic, I understood him as he explains it here and could not understand why people attacked Bishop as they did. I always felt that if you could not "hope" for the salvation of all, you were minimizing the power of Christ's sacrifice along with the incredible and often invisible ways God works in His Providence toward the salvation of souls. This does not mean, as Bishop points out, that I believe all will be saved, because we are still free to reject God. But I can pray and hope that until a person draws their last breath, grace will break through in their lives and save them. And it certainly has the power to do that. Only we can stop it by turning away.

What an enlightening distinction between ‘hope and expectation’, Bishop!! I suspect you just revealed a hidden issue within me! That of being an ‘insider’, as someone who has lived most of my life ‘inside the church structure’, albeit the Evangelical- Protestant church, I’ve focus on being and doing ‘right’!! I would have rejected the idea that GOD would save me BECAUSE of my ‘right focus or understanding’, because I mentally assented to ‘being saved by HIS grace’!! But I’m beginning to think that my REAL belief in my salvation is based on ‘being an insider’!! The thought is really abhorrent to me, it’s so obviously WRONG! Having becoming Catholic 3 years ago, I should be familiar with these disconcerting self-revelations…But each of them brings a further humbling of my ‘interior self’! It also opens the door to how difficult it’s been to believe my late husband, who suddenly passed away 2 yrs ago ‘could be’ in Heaven or at least Purgatory!! He definitely was NOT an ‘insider’, and while all my family tried to comfort me by saying, ‘I’m glad he’s in a better place now’, or ‘I can just visualize he’s enjoying meeting his mother’ (who died when he was 6 mo) I was NOT comforted, because I knew he had great difficulty being ‘truthful or honest’! HOW could he be in Heaven with Jesus (the way, the truth and the life)?? I wanted to believe he was there, but ALL the known evidence pointed elsewhere…I’ve had Mass said for him, once a month since he died just HOPING, some way, some how… Now I see the REAL issue is ‘my heart-belief’ that a person needs to be an ‘insider’ to be SAVED!! That’s really a shocking awareness for me! How DEEP does my pride and arrogance GO?? Thanks, Bishop, ‘just a stiff-neck Pharisee’, here!!

Our job here as faithful catholics is to pray and make reparation so that as much souls as possible can be saved. I suffer a lot because of the offenses against God especially when committed by the people that I love. But I know also that my suffering here can never compare to what Christ has suffered for souls. If I truly love Him and my fellow men, I will have to choose suffering over judging, no matter how difficult it gets sometimes. Because judging brings bitterness and alienates me from God. And then my own soul is in danger. So, I keep praying, suffering and hoping. The thought of one day meeting everyone I know in heaven, brings me to tears.
