if you say "that is" you cannot change what was said. You can't say x = 2 that is x = 4. That makes the entire answer wrong because it is senseless. He said + or - 2 that is + or - 2 raised to the power 1/2. That automatically makes whatever he said wrong.

They did. Each school is allowed one attempt. Once you finish your attempt the quiz mistress tells you if your answer is correct or wrong. She was slightly slow in judging their answer so they decided to cheat.
