In late November, a U.S. official insisted that Ukraine should consider lowering its conscription age from 25 to 18. Today, Ukrainians are balking at the idea. A 20-year-old Ukrainian serviceman named Vladislav said that lowering the military conscription age is a “bad idea.” He volunteered to join the army and believes that the option should be open for 18-year-olds to serve, but that it should not be compulsory. "If there are no people, who the hell needs this land?” The Biden administration is urging Zelensky to lower the draft age from 25 to 18 to boost the military amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, but such a move could have detrimental effects on Ukraine's struggling demographics. As of August, Ukraine's death rate was triple that of the birth rate, as the war with Russia has taken its toll. The first half of this year saw a 9 percent decrease in the numbers of children born in comparison to 2023, and the death to birth ratio has continued to increase since 2020. The population has fallen by 10 million due to deaths, refugees leaving to seek asylum, and fertility issues since the SMO began in 2022, according to Reuters. If bill 12076 is passed and women are allowed to be registered for conscription: Many women face significant barriers to starting families due to instability, increased caregiving responsibilities, and disrupted access to healthcare caused by the SMO. As the SMO continues, these challenges could deepen, leading to a further reduction in birth rates and adding strain to an already declining population. Female-headed households, which are projected to grow due to displacement and men going to war, already face disproportionate and unique economic and social pressures. Compared to other countries in the region, Ukraine's birth rate at just under one child per woman, is the lowest in the region, and in Europe." The demographic challenges are more acute in Ukraine due to the disruptions caused by the ongoing SMO, such as large-scale displacement and economic instability. The war has also led to millions of refugees, many of them young, leaving the country. These factors place Ukraine in a more precarious demographic position compared to neighboring countries. The long-term ramifications of decreasing birth rates and overall population decline in Ukraine extend beyond the immediate loss of human capital to include economic instability, labor shortages and weakened social systems. With an aging population and high out-migration, the country faces a compounding decline in its workforce, which threatens the viability of its recovery efforts. Without substantial interventions, these demographic trends could undermine Ukraine's ability to sustain its development and maintain social cohesion. And large numbers of people were leaving and not coming back, even before Russia’s total war, over unequal opportunities. It could be a Herculean task to convince skilled refugees to repatriate if they have reached a comfortable living standard in the EU. Member states are also using these Ukrainians to plug their own workforce deficits. Their benefit is Ukraine’s loss. The knock-on effects of a demographic crisis will be tremendous, stunting any recovery. The Center for Economic Strategy (CES) forecasts an annual GDP decline between 2.7%- 6.9% if the country loses between 1.3-3.3 million of its citizens. Ukraine also faces a prodigious imbalance between old and young. The age pyramid is very top-heavy, about 30% of the population is pensioners, according to the Ukrainian analytics website Opendatabot. Over half of Ukrainian children under 10 years old are now living abroad, according to researcher Dariia Mykhailyshyna from the CES. With a fertility rate of 1.16, it may be difficult for Ukrainians to multiply their way out of this problem. The ongoing conflict remains a significant barrier, the need for peace to secure a sustainable demographic future, peace is essential for sustainable recovery.

Let them send in their 18 to 24 year old men, leave the Ukrainian women. Guess who the Ukrainian women will mostly likely marry and have babies with? Who is more culturally and ethnically more similar to Ukrainians than Belarusian and specifically Russian men? They might swear in their graves they will not marry Russian men, but at the end of the day that is exactly what they will do, specially in the regions that will end up in Russian hands.

I don't know how you are measuring winning and losing, but Ukraine, less than half Russia's size, not even close to its wealth and resources, is killing 8 Russian soldiers for every Ukrainian soldier killed. I would not call that a win for Russia. Syria collapsed primarily because Russia does not have the ability to project power the way it could 3 years ago. Ukraine is not winning, but neither is Russia. At the rate Russia is gaining ground, it would cost them 2 million soldiers or more to take the whole of Donbas.

Russia shouldn’t have invaded but Ukraine isn’t blameless either. Why couldn’t Ukraine simply treat the Russian population in the eastern provinces decently? They didn’t necessarily want to join Russia, they just wanted more autonomy from the government of Ukraine after 2014 and they weren’t getting it. There were opportunities with the Minsk accords and the 2022 Istanbul agreement to avoid all this death and destruction without trying to drag the whole world into risking nuclear war.

@danwelterweight413718 сағат бұрын
You are 100% wrong. The Eastern Ukrainian regions wanted to seceed from Ukraine way back in 2014 and join Russia. Putin is the one who told them no. You cannot join. He say instead of leaving Ukraine, I will talk to the Ukrainian government and the West and ask that you will have greater autonomy within Ukraine. I will ask that your language, culture and civil rights are respected within Ukraine. I will demand the Ukrainian government stop the siege, the bombardment and the violence that has killed thousands and thousands of your people. Ukraine signed a peace agreement with Him in Minsk called the Minsk agreement in which they agreed all these things. Ukraine refused to abide by the agreement and continued the violence. They were also on the verge of launching a huge invasion and attack of the Eastern Ukraine region. This is why Russia decided to send in its troops to protect those people. Right after that Russia launched another peace agreement attempt in Istanbul in which they offered Ukraine all of its territories back if they agreed to its terms to respect the rights and freedoms of the ethnic Russian Populations in Eastern Ukraine and give them autonomy within Ukraine so that their language and culture be respected. Ukraine had initially agreed. Then Boris Johnson flew to Kiev and told them to reject the agreement and fight instead. And the rest is as they say history. When Russia saw this rejection of the Istanbul peace agreement attempt that is when they decided to bring in the Eastern Ukrainian regions into Russia and annex them to the delight of the people of Eastern Ukraine who had been asking for it for 8 years.
