I think a lot of filmmakers are naive and wanna do it all their own way, despite great information like this being freely accessible to them. It’s a matter of figuring out their goals and guessing how to achieve it, rather than doing their research and setting themselves up for their best chance. Many that I know won’t even try to level up from the amateur setting because they don’t think they are ready, don’t know how, or assume it’s a waste of time. It’s an eye opener when someone they know achieves something because they actually took initiative from advice like this.

What are your thoughts on making a living with film? Do you believe it's possible? Do you make a living solely from your movies or do you know others who are successful at it? Please comment below.

Over the past 47 years, I've been fortunate to make a full-time living by producing, directing and shooting documentaries, travel-adventure films and feature films. It can be done, but there are so many elements that must synchronize for you. Most of the money I've made (about $6million or so) however has come from productions that were not dramatic feature films. I understand that 90-95% of feature filmmakers will never recover the money spent to make their movie, much less make a profit.

I wonder if someone can talk about the same for documentary. It has different revenue sources (e.g. education et al.) but need a lower budget to break even (not really about making a profit in most cases).
