I went the bare ammo way and have recently gone back to the boxes. Smaller 50ct boxes (norma, magtech, fiochi) give me easily 1k per 50cal can with a couple 100+ more. Reason for switching back was after taking a coupe ranges classes and getting miss fires I had no freaking way to know which ones they were. So back to the boxes so I can identify them. And don’t forget the silica packs!

Great point. I have the majority of my ammo stored loosely but came across a post somewhere stating there were recalls on some Sig ammo. When I read that, I thought to myself how would I know which ammo is actually recalled if I store all mine loosely so I started going back to storing in boxes as well. But, I also store ammo in multiple mags so I am kind of in the same boat there as well.

I got a couple of those big 50 cal cans maybe 20 years ago. Repainted and banged out the dings. I use then by just putting the cardboard boxes in. Other ammo I use smaller plastic cans. While cleaning out dad's basement years ago, I found a bunch of smaller 30 cal cans. So yeah, those too... I much prefer the smaller plastic cans to the used huge military metal recycles. Especially the Zombie cans. I use two of those for my collection of .22 LR.

You should get a couple of those plastic cases used for reloads. That way you can keep track of how many you have shot plus you don’t need to haul 60 lbs when you go to the range. I like keeping track of what I am shooting just in case I get a bad batch. I recently got a box of Fiocchi that were not sized correctly and jammed my wife’s carry. I have the larger 50 caliber plastic ones but the ammo is in the original boxes. I need to rotate my ammo as some was bought early in the pandemic and is 2.5 years old. My main calibers for shooting at the range are .380 (14.5K) and 9mm (21k) and 22 cal. (26-27K). It may sound like a lot but I go through about 800-1000 rounds centerfire and 2000 rounds 22 cal. each month.

I’ve got mine in ammo cans but I took the wife’s vapor seal machine and vapor sealed 50-100rd bags with the batch and ID tag from the cardboard boxes and sealed them up with the desiccant bags then put them in ammo boxes. Also labeled the ammo cans with the amount and ammo type. Only ammo I didn’t seal in vapor bags was shot gun rounds it took to much of the vapor seal and the wife got mad so there just in marked ammo cans. She even got me some plastic ammo cans for range day because she couldn’t pick up the steel ammo cans. I have one ammo can full of .22LR that weighs 68lbs and I use a hand truck to move it and all of it’s in sealed vapor bags each labeled. Took awhile to accomplish this but I’m retired and it gave me something to do and the ammo should be protected for a long time if I can’t shoot it all.

I always leave it in the boxes in the can. Way easier to carry, I know the lot numbers, can mix brands and types, and easy to grab boxes for the range. With boxes I just use more cans, but it’s a lot easier to work with them. But I can see the appeal here if it’s all the same brand and bullet weight, you’re not going to be into it or moving the now far too heavy cans regularly for range ammo, and the goal is strictly long term storage for a decade or more. In that case I’d probably line the can with a plastic bag first then seal it up.

I am not a fan of loose ammo storage, this ideology was demonstrated by Norma .308 recall this year. With about 4k-5k round and about 1200 rounds are being recall base on certain lot. If I had dump the ammo there is no way of telling which round belong to effected lot. Alternatively you can buy 9mm from Europe manufacture (S&B, Magtech, Fiocchi, Norma) to save packaging space. Sellier and Bellot 9 mm is the smallest package i ever seen. 1000 round box is small as if not smaller than Herter's, Winchester, Federal, Blazer 250 round package. With S&B I can fit 2k round in a 50 cal can and 2600 rounds in a fat 50 Cal can. I also picked up 3 ammo cans from Bass Pro last week as well. $10 for a metal can with sturdy lid is a no brainer.

I can see this might be useful if you have a lot of ammo to store, and want to minimize space or the number of cans to buy However, I prefer to keep it boxed, or loaded in mags. Well both actually. Remember, if you know how much ammo you have, you don’t have enough.

I could look it up or just weigh some ammo, so how much does that much ammo weigh?

lol I love seeing ammo, it's like treasure ! Personally I have been using the plastic mini ammo cans from Cabela's, they hold about 500 or so 9mm, way easier to carry for a range day. Thank you sir for the ammo porn haha.

I certainly like the metal ammo cans rather than plastic. However, 60lbs is not really practical if you have reason to move them. Cheers!

I store my ammo in the original boxes which I pack in 50cal boxes. If you dump ammo in a 50cal box loose, it will be way too heavy to carry around. Keep Prepping my friends.

You could have gotten 1800 in the can still in the boxes..

I started to put my 9mm in a can that size, but I ended up using a 30 Cal can. Way less weight.

Yup all loose ammo goes into a 30 cal can for me!

Loose ammo like that corrodes faster . Especially if it has been touched by sweaty or oily fingers when being packed. Ever opened a spam can of ammo only to find it green with verdigris ? Leave ammo in boxes when storing it and it will last longer. If it is just range ammo, by all means, dump it loose and shoot it up !

Hahaha. I have 1 can with 230gr 45 in it. 1000 rds weighs that much and there's still room in the can for more.
