Still very exciting to see the progress - just don’t hurt yourself!

Everyone says get more bodies in there, uncover it all quickly, but if it were my dig, I would WANT to do it myself, at my own pace. I would just enjoy each day that I’m uncovering something, on my land, for my own enjoyment. Don’t know if you feel the same way. The satisfaction comes when you can say to yourself, “Look what I did today. Well done, mate!”

That's pretty much how I feel yes. I occasionally get help with a few things, but ultimately I kind of want the project to last a long time.

At some point in your life, when you are elderly and looking back, you'll remember: "I alone dug out and moved 5,000 pound of dirt in one day." And, then, you will marvel at your youthful strength and perseverance ... And wonder why you thought you should do better.

Nah.. he'll think of the time he dug out 2 tons of dirt in a day 😉

Unfair test , it was tough digging , you didn’t count the rocks you piled up , you didn’t count the loading and moving to where you tipped it , that’s a solid days work you did there . Enjoy the holiday 😀

Awww, my beloved reality show has a new series! What a challenge you set for yourself, three tons to dig out. I can't even think about such amount of hard work, really. Sounds like a job for Hercules himself! Well, good work is rewarding by good break. Have fun on your vacation!

Great Challenge . YOU DID BRILLIANTLY. To be fair that wasn't digging. It was 'ground works' that normally get done with a mini digger (at least). Its astonishing how a flimsy bit of polythene can brings things to snails pace. If you moved all day without a break except "permitted" tea & lunch breaks that is all that you could expect of yourself. An Estimator or a Quantity Surveyor might mbe able to tell you what rates a man is expected to move at and in the various soils. They would not have roots, collapsed walls and ironmongery to deal with either. From what I can remember of my history lessons the Canal and Railway navvies of 18th and 19th centuries could move well over ten tons a day in the right sort of conditions. Something to think about when on a rail journey through rolling countryside Have a well deserved holiday.

During your introduction I was thinking, yes, I reckon that is quite achievable, but then when we could see what you were dealing with it's not at all surprising that the tonnage was not quite what you targeted. Shifting dirt is one thing but excavating it and working through obstacles is quite another thing so well done, you made great progress and should have a sense of achievement ! Now, relax and repair, and have a great holiday !

At first it may sound a bit off putting but if you plan to do a lot of heavy lifting it would be a good idea to wear a strong wide hernia belt, the kind which is designed to prevent a hernia from forming. Once you have a hernia caused by heavy lifting and digging there is no going back. Modern medicine will allow a hernia to be repaired but your lifting and digging days will be over. Work smart. I really like watching the progress of your project, thumbs up.

When you do unfamiliar work for your body, your limbs hurt (yesterday, 16.09.) I was sawing wood for a good friend and colleague. Ouch, all my muscles hurt today). But just then you should continue with the unfamiliar work. And thereby gather strength.

If much more soil has to be removed, would renting a mini excavator be feasible? You would have cleared the area in a long weekend without any muscle strain
