this is one of my biggest nursing fears! im so worried when I go to my first clinicals Ill make faces patients will find offensive. thank you Ashley!

Ashley, thank you for being positive and supportive about this subject, instead of automatically saying "you cant be a nurse if you don't absolutely love vomit and blood", I've met a lot of people who've told me and others that but you saying that it will get better with experience really helps me feel like that shouldn't be anything that should hold me back, so thank you!! ❤❤❤❤

lol, its not fun for the patient either. I remember being very stubborn and wanting to do everything for myself when I was in the hospital but eventually I got so sick that the nurses had to help me with stuff. was not fun. lost some of my dignity there but I'm forever grateful for nurses and it's helped me realise that I want to become a nurse too. :)

how much "dirty work" did you experience in nursing school? I don't find blood, vomit, bathing people, or pee gross, just poo. I want to be a school nurse or a nurse at a family doctor's office.

Hi I'm a senior in high school and have in the past been very squeamish to things like poop and vomit. Being a registered nurse is my absolute dream and I really don't want to let my silly weak stomach ruin this for me. How can I handle my first clinicals, and could this trait really make or break my career? I've been so anxious over this ever since I've chosen my major.

Good to hear. I haven't even changed my nephew's diaper since he was one, so I know I'll have adjust to all the gross stuff. But like you said, it's a part of being sick. And I look forward to being able to take care of sick people, including relatives, with a strong stomach and gentle spirit. It's what I would want for myself.

Continue to be a good nurse. Some nurses hide in the med room or hide in a patient room chatting to patients about their homeland or some other thing on purpose, when there are these messy jobs to be done, allowing other nurses to help with these extra duties or leave it to the assistant. In some cases, they will have an extra health assistant on the unit because they know that the lazy nurse is on shift who has a sore back and allergic to bedpans who still has time to sit and show photos of her dog in 29 different poses.

The difference between professional nurses & CNA's is that professional nurses have set goals for the patients to keep clean & dry & not get any skin breakdown, whereas the CNA's are task-oriented to just clean up the poop & move on to the next room to clean up more poop.

There are many different fields in nursing that would lessen the chance of you seeing someone vomit. But, there are also a lot of fields where you do see it more frequently. In my opinion, I used to be one of those who would gag anytime I saw someone puke, but now I could practically eat and watch someone puke. You just become desensitized to it. :)

do you have any LPNs where you work? im from Canada and it seems thatLPNs are utilized here more often then in the states. Some floorss have more LPNs than RNs. I just finished LPN school and wrote my liscence, just waiting on results. My one thing i just can barely handle is vomit and edema, i dont know why but edema just makes me nauseous to feel, not so much in the legs, but when i find it in less common places such as the groin.

Yuuuck. You're a saint, but you shouldn't have to do that. No one should have to clean up those types of messes after they've worked hard in school to educate and better themselves. I just learned that I might come into contact and have to deal with "code brown" a couple times a year in a medical field that I thought was safe from of all revolting situations. I literally have a severe phobia about that sort of thing and can't/won't not help clean a disgusting mess. I wouldn't ask anyone to do it for me either; I refuse to go out like that.

I just started working in a private mental health hospital as an medication Endorsed Enrolled Nurse. I came from aged care dementia as a nursing assistant where I was up to my ears in urine, feaces, pad changes, vomit, diarrhoea, showering people, body aching everyday and exhausted from the lifting and transferring of residents. I don't do none of that anymore the patients are self caring, I don't even have to make a bed. I provide emotional support, attend group meeting, admissions, discharges , medications administration, attend care level observations, ect. If you don't want any dirty stuff get into mental health if you don't mind patients with mental health issues, I came from dementia specific so it doesn't bother me. Most of our patients are depressed, have PTSD, alcohol and drug issues and eating disorders.

Nursing is for women...this is truly a woman's job.....they're better caretakers. Really,...men cleaning up diapers...that's ridiculous.

There is a time when you might be in a hospital and not able to control your fluids...and the person who will change your diaper is a male nurse...

Men can make awesome nurses. And not all women are “care takers.” I’m going to school for nursing, so I’m a care taker in that way, but I NEVER want kids because, well I kind of hate them lol. So I’m not a caretaker in that way. Are you like 80 years old?

@AshleyLorenaAdkins8 жыл бұрын
arima arner I think you're misinterpreting the meaning of this video. By "dirty work" I mean tasks that the average human being would consider unpleasant. I'll admit, doing "dirty work" isn't my most favorite part of being a nurse, but I enjoy making my patients feel comfortable and clean. But before people enter the nursing field, they should have a heads up as to what a nurse entails....and cleaning up bodily fluids is one of them. I respect your opinion, but have to kindly disagree. I take great pride in the care I provide patients, including the "dirty work."
