People often say that Japan is a country with more affordable food, housing, etc... What they don't factor in is the fact that these lower prices are commiserate with the lower wages of Japan, so it ends up balancing out or sometimes costing even more. Granted, you say you live in Tokyo which is probably the most expensive city in Japan.

wages are in line with some european countries, although not the richest ones.

Damn, 165,100 yen is about the equivalent of 850 pounds in the UK, and that's the amount of what I pay for rent only in a small city in the UK for a studio apartment xD
