How much does half a cow cost?

Hey y’all, it’s Mel from Fodie Hill Farms. Today I picked up my half a cow that we ordered from a local butcher. I’ll walk you through all the cuts of meat that we received and the price that we paid for the half of cow. Keep in mind that you can customize your cuts, and these are the cuts that I like to cook with the most. If you decide to order half a cow or a whole cow, your cuts may vary from mine. Just know it is significantly cheaper to buy a cow at a local butcher like this than it is to go to your local grocery store to buy this amount of meat. Not to mention the quality of the meat is a lot better. I was lost when I first started buying meat from a butcher, not knowing what to get. Just paid $1575 for half steer dressed weight 295 pounds... still need to pay the butcher another $630. Sounds like you got a great deal. From California here. 🐮

WRONG! She forgot to divide the dressed weight by 2, for half a cow! Half of 793 is 396.50 lbs (not including aging and deboning); $1643.80 divided by 396.5 = $4.15 per pound! Still a good deal.

Respectfully ask to revisit your numbers. Actual meat would be closer to 528 pounds after aging, trim and deboning (40% live weight). Since you got half, that would be 264 pounds of usable product, or $6.22 per pound. Still a great deal though

I want to do this but I can't afford it. It's $10 a pound where I live. That's directly from the farm. Just can't put out that kind of money all at once.

I teamed up with a member of my family and we split the cost of half a cow. (It normally last my family almost a year along with the other meats we have) I just kept putting up the money I would normally spend through the year on beef items. By the next year I had a hunk to spend. It’s a lot to put out at once’s but very well worth it! I hope you can find a way to do it soon!

@@Fodiehillfarm I live alone. I thought about trying to buy a quarter beef but I don't want all hamburger. I like steaks. I always cut up the roasts into steaks. I like liver. How much would a quarter pound last one person? I mean a quarter beef? How much would a half a beef last one person?

@@nogames8982 it depends on how much of other meat you eat. We are a family of 4 and we eat chicken, pork, and deer along with the beef. It’s last us almost a year. So I would assume a quarter beef would last you as long too!

@@Fodiehillfarm well, I took the plunge. I bought a half cow. Everything all added up together came to $8.89 a pound. Which I realize is high but for my area that’s not bad. some friends of mine bought 50 pounds of it. I had the first ribeye last week and it was the best ribeye I’ve ever had.

A local processor that does my deer. He gets with a rancher that raises cattle and they do cows on the off season.

I know if you buy a cow that was used for milk you get mostly fat so I was told it depends on what kind of cow you buy i was told you want a muscle meat and it should hang about 5 to 12 days to draw so many pounds of fluid out I was told us get better meat and you are not paying gor that extra fluids
