I brought in four bankers boxes full of books in very good condition that they were just going to throw away at work. I had no idea what to expect. Maybe $25?... $50.... $100!?... Nope. $4. I wish I would have asked which books they actually paid me for just out of curiosity. I was too shell shocked, almost embarrassed, that I just wanted to collect my pittance and get out of there.

Most people feel that way after going there. You should hear the amount of dismay and disappointment I hear whenever I'm hunting for comic books there. Comments such as: That's it?! What?!

I go to HPB not only to buy but I have also sold books to them. Over 50 bucks, and hour wait time, and I got 5 bucks. Yes, they offer great prices when buying. Thing is, with what they sell their items for, they can buy a book for a dollar and sell it for 5.99 like I have seen. 4.99 profit right there.

Did you mean over 50 books? I heard they pay 12 cents to the dollar if you're lucky.

I got 51 cents for a new,unopened video cassette of AMADEUS. Could be copied to DVD. I was sorry I sold it. The DVD I bought is not the whole movie. NO 16th sonata, "Theme from Elvira Madigan". That's the piece Soliari was brought to tears.

I prefer donating because it's more likely pepole who get/buy the books will like them way more if there willing to pay for it plus I'm cheap and like owning books and if books arnt in good enough condition but still good condition libarys are unlikely to take them

I'm a book reseller so I get a lot and buy in bulk. Now I knew I wasn't going to get much, but I buy books by the pallet. They're about $50 per pallet. I got out everything I could sell online from the 600-800 books that come in these pallets, which is roughly about 75. That's pretty normal. I donate the kids books to my local library where I have other business deals I run with them, more of a trade system really. They'll sell those at their alcove and make a little money so they're happy. I sell some to an online store where they give me pennies to the dollar for that they're looking to buy (similar to HPB) and the rest I took to HPB, which was about 400 after that. I wound up with $50.89. I'm actually happy with that seeing how I basically got the pallet for free and the rest is profit. Not only do I not have to pay to get them removed from my garage every week and find somewhere to put them but I get money back by selling it to HPB. If they throw them away, that's not my problem. Again, I don't have to deal with the storage headache. Long story short, just go in there with an open mind. They're running a business. They may pay you little to nothing it seems but to them it's stretching a dollar to make a small profit to keep the lights on and everyone paid.
@Jay_Rule

I see how it makes sense on your end because you are getting a great deal by buying and investing as a pallet but most people normally buy their books or items at full price and bring to HPB to resell and they offer basically nothing compared to the original purchase price. I see instances where they mark the items similar to eBay pricing.
@stablechaos5433

@@Jay_Rule yeah I can see it from that point of view. People just really need to understand it’s a business and HPB is generally a used book store. So they can’t sell for full price anymore or even half price on some books because people want cheap stuff these days. Can’t please everyone and still make money. Honestly, I would do the exact same thing and pay someone $0.20 or less per book so I can sell it for just $2 to make a small profit. That’s if the book even sells.
@Jay_Rule
@Jay_Rule 10 ай бұрын
For a small percentage of items that aren't in high demand that would be normal. Next time when you go into the store, pay attention to their items behind locked cases and prices of normal books not in the clearance section. I'm pretty sure they are making a good profit. Don't even get me started with Goodwill prices when they get all their items for free.@@stablechaos5433

@@Jay_Rule I’m in there regularly keeping them stocked. I notice their “antique” sections and the items behind the till counter. The items most expensive are the ones around the outside of the store walls, which are non-fiction & (anime/comics). The ones in the center are all fiction and are relatively cheap. The back of the store is clearance and kids section/teens. Those will always be cheap because it’s a high turnover section. Most of the time the books are just as advertised when you walk in the door (half priced) from the original price of the book.

Almost every time I'm there shopping and I hear an offer made to someone, all I hear is disappointment like: That's It?! Here are some online comments: Alot of the time they make up they're own prices - I gave them a book, they gave me a dollar. A couple days later I saw it behind a glass case for 60$ Talk about burning the locals by rubbing it in my face in my own town. I wouldn't expect more than 10% of the value. Probably closer to 3%.

@@daveparker5541 I thought those old Nintendo games are worth money. You definitely should've held onto those to sell on eBay or Craigslist. I understand they are a business and have to make money but their lowball offers are outrageous to the point of disgust.
