Sg is a very small island with very limited space to carve up for housing complete with communal facilities, schools / educational facilities, hospitals, govt agencies buildings / centers, commercial buildings, roads, carparks, green parks, natural reserves, water catchment reservoirs, and reserved open spaces for future developments. The Sg SLA, URA, LTA, NParks, MND, HDB, etc agencies have done a great job in the urban planning and space usage of Sg. Also thanks to our founder PM Mr Lee Kuan Yew for his great vision and establishment of various govt agencies despite our small island and to a certain extend keeps public housing affordable to 80% of Singaporeans.

Hey, interesting episode but one comment: sometimes the hosts confuse renting with buying a house. Impt to compare accurately. Also public and private housing means v diff things in diff countries. Thanks.

After watching this, am appreciating Singapore govt for their HDB schemes in trying to ensure Singaporeans can own a house..instead of having to RENT. Although housing is still expensive, at least it's possible:')

For Hong Kong, it’s close to like SG 4rm HDB (1k sqf) = HK 3rm apt (about 500-600 sqf).

HDB initial prog upon its inception in 1960 was to quickly house people in proper sanitized comfortable decent home and get rid of squatters / ghettos. The massive prog was launched targeting to house 80% of population. After this was achieved there was over supply of HDB and the prog was deliberately slowed down. But then short supply came around and this gave birth to BTO so that HDB could build according to demand and not over or under supply.

Colchester, UK you can get what Chris said for SGD 500k (about GBP230K), but you won't get anything in London (not even a studio), which is similar to Paris like what Arthur had described which was helpful to understand better as Arthur gave a viewpoint for Nice and Paris which are completely different.

i think this conversation should be clearer on Buying vs Renting, and Buying a house in the open market( HDB or condo) aka resale vs gov public housing aka HDB flats.
@Frederick-765 Жыл бұрын
Singapore's housing situation is wayyy better than most first world countries. For example in france you need at least 1,2 million sgd to get some form of housing in paris

Recent spike of housing cost is due to double whammy. The Vovid pandemic has greatly delayed the completion of BTO flats. As such, a lot of Singaporeans turn to resale HDB flats. This create a sudden surge of demand for resale HDB flats. The sudden surge is further aggravated by influx of foreigners from Malaysia, China, HK, India and Europe who are emigrated here for greener pastures due to booming Asia Pacific region or due to prolonged pandemic lockdowns or uncertainty of political situations.

+The Smart Global Interesting discussion but need to clarify with your viewers that 3 and 4 room HDB flats are actually 2 and 3 bedders instead of 3 and 4 bedders. Not sure where else in the world you would hear the use of number of rooms to indicate anything other than number of bedrooms. Secondly, a crucial point is asking the foreigners for their salaries and incomes. What is the point of saying that housing in Hong Kong, Vancouver and Nice or Paris are more expensive without an income to compare? What are their minimal and median wages over in those places?
@thespacejedi2 жыл бұрын
Fact is they came from both countries so they are in a better position to tell us if SG's properties are relatively more affordable/available or not since they have experience in both markets.
@Averagebum212 жыл бұрын
@@thespacejedi That's not the point. A discussion asking for specifics and assuming the foreigners are providing a relative answer? The foreigners were providing specific answers on what the same amount of money could buy in the city they lived in, not whether according to their experiences housing in their cities was more expensive, as you're trying to twist it to mean. In fact those were the interpretations of the hosts and not that of the foreigners. Nice try. What do you think the median salary is in Nice, Paris, London or Vancouver? What do you think the cleaners earn over there and do you even know what Singaporean cleaners earn?
@thespacejedi2 жыл бұрын
@@Averagebum21 i see you conveniently left our Hong Kong earning power to subtly make your point sound better :) and the burden is on you to show us these numbers since you're the one try to make a point
@Averagebum212 жыл бұрын
@@thespacejedi You are absolutely wrong on both counts and I predicted you would provide this very typical response. (1) I left out Hong Kong because I knew their housing prices were sky high and their income low. Nothing to prove or disprove. I'm still not certain what their median income to property price ratios is, so would love to hear the feedback of the Hong Kong lady. (2) Not everyone who seeks a good dialogue asks with an ulterior motive, but this seems to be the typical view of Singkies trying to prove a narrative. Kindly correct me on this if not true. If I had the figures, I would neither have asked nor would I have watched the video. I do suspect that the median incomes of London, Paris, Nice and Vancouver are much higher than those in Singapore, as are their minimal wages.
@thespacejedi2 жыл бұрын
@@Averagebum21 If you only have suspicions then you should do your due diligence first before criticising the SG system. Typical or not, an empty argument befits an empty response.

@@alui5362 Yes. Ang Mo Kio is kinda outside the city as well right? City as in Orchard and all?
@alui53622 жыл бұрын
@@fr0sty1983 alamak no.. hmm maybe it will help to take a look at the size of these other cities, population size and urban areas compared to what's considered outside. The entire Singapore is already the equivalent of a small city in these other countries. Locally we call CBD orchard area as 'town' but that's like our local definition. Across the world, Singapore itself is a city. At best you can say that places like Loyang choa/lim chu Kang tengah are what would be considered outside the city. but probably more like 'outskirts' lah.
