USFS /USDA Corps of Engineer campsites are my first choice ($10-$20 a night) to have a pit toilet & picnic table. The America The beautiful Senior Pass gives U.S. citizens 50% off at those campsites, and free entry to national parks. Two riders/2 tents can occupy any campsite IME (so that can cut costs). A (more expensive) campsite or motel every few nights for a shower. Road trips are better with easy pack snacks (nuts/dates/jerky/seeds etc) divided into daily baggies (to avoid those $10 convenience store stops). Overnight Oats in water & camp coffee every breakfast. Pnut butter on tortilla (lunch)-canned chicken-ramen noodles for a few nights when you don't want to stop (to shop, or a prepared meal). 40 oz stainless container for ice (daily from soda dispenser machine) lasts 24 hours. Liquid IV packs. I set cash aside weekly for my travels, and use my ATM card just for fuel when possible. Best part of Moto camping (to me) is having a minimalist lifestyle, without denying yourself an enjoyable vacation (without great expense). Staying two nights in one spot and riding local in between (nice not to break camp as often). Enjoyed your post & thoughts of other viewers, as always.

Just a comment on water, I travel with a Camelback. When I stop for gas I ask if I can get some ice from the pop dispenser. I always offer to pay to get some ice, I’ve never had to pay. The Camelback has a large opening so it’s easy to fill with ice. As I ride, the ice melts and the water is always cold. Just remember to blow the water out of the tube (back into the Camelback) after you take a sip. Otherwise the water in the tube can get extremely hot and a mouthful of hot water is not pleasant! Having the Camelback helps with dehydration in hot temperatures as you can take sips of water as you ride. Safe travels!

Good point about the hot water in the tube, I hadn't thought of that!

I did three weeks rough camping in Scotland last year. Paid next to nothing. The secret is to cook in your tent, never eat out and shower after using public swimming pools. A cheap holiday (vacation).

Loved watching the places I visited on my bike in 2023. Like you I am retired. 10 full weeks and 10 000 miles of living on my bike. All camping, and only 2 nights at commercial campgrounds. The rest was at BLM, State Parks, or dispersed camping. Cooked my own meals except for lunch at restaurants once a week. Water, and cold beverages for evenings at camp, actually adds up. Daily expenses roughly 50-55$/day but that is for everything except souvenirs, tires, insurance and transportation from Europe. Spent 12 nights in Utah including 4 days of hiking. Could easily spent twicce as many days but time is always an issue.

Sounds great. That’s my kind of travel. I’d take longer trips but summer is short and I want to spend most of it at home and with my wife.

I travel on a speed Triple, so no camping. Gas $50/day (6 days) food about $30/day Motels $90. (3 nites) Friends $20/day (10 days) gifts call it a total 14 days trip 4000 miles $1200 rounded $120/day or $.30 per mile. LA to Missoula to Seattle and home 600 mile/day rides. I love it, Am 80 years so may be done usually 2 meals per day

It's great that you're still riding at 80. I hope to follow your path. I don't know how long I'll be camping, but so far I don't have any problems sleeping in a tent.

Something tells me math might not be your strong point. 2 X $140 is $280 not $183.

Do you also get travel insurance for the US? When I was working with full benefits in Canada I never considered travel insurance but being retired is a different story. Thoughts. Your estimating skills need a bit of work. Tell the wife 20 per day, spend 100 but get a nice gift so it all works out.

I always buy travel insurance before going to the US. A minor accident could mean bankruptcy. But the older I get the more it costs. Some of my older friends are cutting back on their travel due to the high cost of travel insurance.

@ I am in Calgary and fortunately in good health. A quick online quote for ten days in mid-july suggests about 125 CAD. i did not check longer or shorter time periods. Is that about what you would expect?
