LukeDude759 From a literal weight point of view, probably not much. From an information point of view, it depends on how complex/detailed the thought is as well as how complex/detailed the thoughts/conceptions it is built from are. That's what I think would be a fair guess anyway.
@matvas229 жыл бұрын
Well I mean I don't think that's a valid question. A thought is billions of neurons firing off in your brain( action potential) and those don't have any weight to them so...nothing. It would be the equivalent of asking how much does happiness weigh or how much does the color purple weigh.
@accruenewblue9 жыл бұрын

Quick update on this stat here, Vsauce stated the estimate that the size of the internet would double every 5 years, this how turned out to be a little off. At time of writing the internet should be about 25 000 000 terabytes according to the estimate, however it is currently at roughly 128 849 018 880 terabytes, so roughly 5000 times larger :P Couldn't be bothered to work out the new weight lol but if the weight is just 50 grams x how much bigger the internet is now compared to then, its possibly about 1288kg.

At the dinner table, I've sometimes tried to explain to my parents and oldest brother that everything is physical. Nothing is actually digital or virtual. At the root of it, it's just electrons and whatnot moving through bits of a computer. My dad understood. My mom began to go on a tangent about the human "soul", and my oldest brother said that I was just trying to boost my ego by showing off how smart I was.
@petergriffin99312 жыл бұрын
Older brothers right
@MisterPlague Жыл бұрын
Yes, you are trying to boost your ego.
@avcomth Жыл бұрын
Well information about something is "digital" and "virthal" because they're represented by binaries which could be transported instantaneously over distance and even more importantly the original information at the source is not displaced or destroyed--this makes them virtual, like a concept. The soul that your mom mentioned is something physical too, they are energies that just exist in a different level/dimension than our physical world but I'm sure that human will eventually be able to break barrier on all these frontiers in the distant future.
@Coppermeshman Жыл бұрын
@@avcomth where does the understanding of higher dimensions come into the subjectivity of the human mind? There is not enough elaboration. Are you talking about quantum mechanics?
@SeaShrimp Жыл бұрын
@@avcomthWaht are you on about, the information is stored as electrons, when you transport it, its not instantanious, its transported at the speed of how fast the electrons can move through the ethernet cable / speed of light through the network, light is also a physical thing, it can be measured, its not an "idea", and they carry energy. And your "more importantly" fact makes even less sense, just because you can copy something without destroying or misplacing the original informatioin doesnt make it "VIRTUAL". My printer can print out 2 identical photos, and i can write 2 identical letters containing the exact same info, every book of the same type contains the exact same letters, that info is still phyiscal, its a book / letter / photo. Youre a goofy bofoon.

i feel like that number is small. however you have to take into account that files on the internet are much smaller than files one would traditionally store on their computers. I'm left thinking that this may not account for the massive increase over the last two years of HD video, which is considerably larger than previous formats. The 'doubling every 5 years' might not account for the constant increase in image size in both still images, videos, and motion graphics.

"Hey Vsauce, Michael here, and this strawberry weights about 50 grams, which according to Russell Seitz also happens to be the weight of the entire Internet. And as always, thanks for watching."

This is so amazing! Does our brain get heavier everytime we see something? Or is it wiped once we forget? Or is everything we have ever seen stored, but we are unable to unlock the contents? So when we learn something does our brain get heavier from the information? Do we forget, or is it just that we don't know how to access the info?

VSauce and Carl Sagan both went to the University of Chicago and are/were excellent communicators of scientific knowledge. These great individuals continue to inspire minds all over the world. VSauce’s last sentence in the main body of this video is reminiscent of Sagan’s pale blue dot quote… VSauce is the new Carl Sagan.

It's rather obvious that digitally stored information is extremely light per se. What's interesting, if you calculate it, the Internet stored as a binary number (bit off = 0 bit on = 1) would have almost 10^20 binary digits (based on the estimate you quoted after Eric Schmidt). How much is that exactly? Well, assume a single digit is a millimeter wide, millimeter tall, and you have a tape with the "Number of the Internet". Then you could stretch the tape from the Earth to the Moon 100 000 000 000 times, so if you wrap it side-by-side, we'd have a 100 000 kilometers wide tape connecting the Earth to the Moon. 100 000 kilometers around 8 times more than the Earth is wide (diameter). Not bad, considering the digits are so small. You could do a video estimating the maximum amount of information the universe could store. You could estimate the degrees of freedom for a single particle in your "universe computer" and log2(degrees_of_freedom) is how many bits 1 particle can store. That'd be an interesting estimate! And I'm not even touching storing information as waves, energy, or fields...

But we could never store all combinations of a deck of 52 cards digitally, even if we use up the entire universe to create one big digital storage.
