I appreciate you going deep Jack. In my dystopian nightmare I’m in a world where music was a forbidden relic of the past. I discovered an old guitar hidden in the rubble of a destroyed concert hall. Desperate to hear it, I strummed a chord, but the strings snapped instantly, recoiling like snakes. The wood began to splinter and crack, the body crumbling to dust in my hands. As the last fragment fell to the ground, I realized that the guitar, like music itself, had decayed beyond repair. I stood alone in the silence, haunted by the memory of a melody that would never be heard again.

Good video. For a few reasons I have downsized and feel good about it. I had 24 guitars, 5 amps, and many pedals. Now, I am down to 2 guitars, one amp, and only a tuner pedal. I am trying to force myself to practice instead of shop.

This is consistent with my current gear mindset, though I still have many more guitars than 2! 🎸 And, when I’m focused on learning a new song, improving my playing and/or preparing for a show, I don’t focus so much on what the next toy will be. Sometimes I even think I don’t deserve having all these guitars when I realize how much better I should be playing by now. 🤪 I wonder how many of us spend our time focused on gear to avoid actually learning and playing. I feel I’ve remedied that for myself now that I am finally in bands in my late-middle age.

I used to have way too many Guitars to really enjoy all of them - after all you can only play one at a time - and I’d find that most of them just sat around while I’d gravitate to my favorite’s. Nowadays I’ve tried to own just the ones I really love, and know I’ll pick up often. Even so, it still seems like a lot! 😉

For years I was a “guitar shopper” v. guitar player. I’ve owned over 180 guitars, with as many 35 at one time. I started my first band in my early 50s and have gotten my guitar holdings way down, as I’m focused more on playing now, and some of them I seldom pick up (and they take up space). But I still want to have a variety of tools. E.g., main solid body electric 6-string (and a spare), electric 12, open-G 5-string electric (a la Keef), acoustic 6-string flattop, etc. So now I have a “negative materiality” about guitars, thinking “how can I get down to just a dozen?” But I do have regrets about some I got rid of. 🎸

Although I owned my first guitar when I turned 75 (two sons are professional players), I made a mental list of brand and style instruments I would purchase within a budget. At 75 and retired, I have time to spend at least a half hr each day with all 10 (one left on my list during 2025). Two amps (starter and Fender Mustang MTX25 amplifiers). Faith is very person and should never be influenced by outside forces, either personal or institutionally. I enjoy your programming, so, please keep it up.

Thank you! From that standpoint, I actually find our perpetual desire (even yearning) for beauty through the arts to be evidence of God. There doesn't seem to be any scientific explanation that satisfies why we're so deeply moved by vibrations that happen in a certain sequence through a period of time, or watching the rays of sunlight change color in the atmosphere during a sunset.

Amen brother Jack. Little did I realize I would be attending church today. 😆 Do not apologize for being "preachy". It is ALWAYS good to stand back and appreciate what we have. Whether it is guitar related or not. I only have 7 pedals, but, I will only use 1 or 2 at any given time together. I have 4 amps, but only really play two; my original 65 Super Reverb or Super Champ XD. The other two, only then and again. Actually, am going to sale my Vox AC30 purple tolex. I have 7 electric guitars. A few yrs ago, someone asked me why do I need all these guitars. My answer: because each guitar has it's own unique voice and can inspire me in different ways. There is only really one more guitar I want to get, and that is a semi-hollow body, such as a 335. Again, different tonal qualities. "If", I was forced to downsize, and keep only what I thought I needed, guitar wise, I would keep my Esquire, Amp; 65 Super Reverb ( a NO brainer ) and effects: Boss Distortion DS-1, but I would try to sneak the Echoplex somehow. 😆 Music wise, am not really that set on buying stuff I don't need. Now my OTHER hobby, plastic model kits. I am REALLY sinful. I think currently, I have over 150 unbuilt kits in my stash + separate detail part kits. While on the average I built maybe 3 kits a year 😆 Safe to say, I currently have ENOUGH kits to last me during my life time. Do I NEED all of these, NO. I think logically, it would be better to buy a kit, finish it, then buy another. But, my mind doesn't work in logic mode with model kits.😆But on the other hand, I do sell kits from time to time, so I can buy the NEW eye candy that is about to be released. Thanks for your real guitar talk Jack!

Great Video Jack! The late great Johnny Ramone played 1,985 shows with the same white Mosrite Guitar.(on the back of the guitar he wrote "my main guitar") Of course he had backup guitars but the point is is that you can play a lifetime with one guitar as long as you take good care of it. I'm guilty of buying more than I need but I make good use of what I have. That being said I could sell some equipment and be fine with that as well.

Honestly, we the bedroom guitarists don't really need custom shop Fender and Gibson guitars. We should learn to be happy with the guitars that we have and just make music with them. The biggest reason for having multiple guitars is for having different types of them. Ex. a Les Paul and a Telecaster guitar. I will say this find a reasonably priced guitar that you can't put down and you'll be happier than a lark. The main thing isn't the name on the headstock but how much you enjoy playing the guitar. My favorite guitars are my 2 Epiphone Les Pauls with the old style headstock. One is Korean and one Chinese, both highly modified to my personal tastes and modded differently. My black and creme Les Paul Standard (the Chinese one) was my only guitar for quite a while. I recorded my first album with some friends on it in 2021. I'll never part ways with that guitar.

I literally had that hello kitty guitar once. I was travelling in India and found a broken and tiny pink guitar in the place I was staying, it had 5 strings, 4 of which were rusty. I couldn't really get it tunned but it brought inmense joy and gratitude to sing over a few out of tune chords. The same applies to housing, food and the rest. I was down to a hut, a bucket of cold water and a plate of rice and pulses. Now I have my gibson guitar, my fender amp, a hot shower, all the food and conforts that I need and more, and can appreciate them even more. I don't think your words are preachy, but a well needed wake up call to the world we westerners live in. Thank you sir.

Squier Strat, Vox MV50 AC with a Celestion Vintage 30 12-inch speaker cabinet can get me through almost any gig. You don’t need thousands of dollars worth of gear to play and the older I get the less I want to carry around. If I need more volume than that for an outdoor gig, I add a Vox BC108 8-inch speaker.

Great, thought provoking discussion starter! I liked the Adams quote - profound. Teens I had one acoustic. Thru the '70s with my band Les Paul + Wah, Fuzz, Phaser, Tape Delay + Fender Reverb. Post band into studio work added a Strat, Yairi Steel String & Yairi Nylon String Acoustics, replaced the Phase 90 with MXR Chorus. When I became a studio owner / producer I added a few different guitars and now have some boutique pedals but in essence I reckon a LP & Strat Style with necessary pedals and Steel & Nylon acoustics are what I need to function - the rest constitute a bonus. I take a different one home every week or so to be friends with - rotating them helps keep them 'alive' and great for coming up with new ideas.

Looking at second hand guitar and amp ads in guitar forums gives me serious mental health issues. Like, I cannot be happy not being able to afford gear that I absolutely want. My amp is not hand-wired, my acoustic guitar doesn't say Taylor or Martin on the headstock, and that makes me seriously depressed. There, I said it

Good video. I ordered a custom built guitar almost five years ago. I finally got it in my hands (the luthier still needs to put laquer on it once he's back from vacation) and guess what: I still sound like me. I could do with only that guitar and a Marshall. Maybe a Tubescreamer or an SD-1 for a boost. That's it. The rest is practice.

Gratitude for what we have is important and your message certainly rings true in that regard. I would say that, many who play do so because they love music and start their path of learning to emulate their favorite artists. If their music taste is eclectic, then being able to sound like your hero’s sound is that much more challenging because the gear it takes to make that sound is as varied as there are artist’s music and styles. So, if the “need” is to learn and “hear” oneself playing in a particular style of music then that Need requires certain gear to make it happen. Gratitude in always important but the definition of need versus want changes from person to person depending upon their goals.

Player vs Collector always a challenge but ‘ keep your eye simple and your whole body will be bright’ Found keeping gear down to 5 electrics-2 acoustics-2 basses and 4 classic amps. All I need and the more I play with band and gig , less G.A. S affects me or my wallet! Great video and content!!

Since I started learning guitar in a serious manner, abandoning thrashing away fruitlessly at online courses and going back to the basics with an instructor, not once have I thought about acquring more gear. As it stands, I've got a Tele, a LP, and a Blues Jr and a bunch of pedals - gear that's above my skill level but it sounds ace together and I loving trying to live up to it. But to be honest, I could ditch almost all the pedals, plug directly into the amp, push the valves and it would sound fantastic for my purposes. To me, GAS is often just displacement activity for the effort that practice requires - "If I could just get that JLS Klon knockoff it will finally transform my skill level". And when it doesn't, well, then the search continues. That said, I do feel my life could be transformed by the addition of a Les Paul gold top special as those P90s would almost certwainly make a world difference. i know, it's my problem, and I am working on it...

This would be such a weird conversation to have when I was coming up. I got my union card and started playing bass at weddings when I was 16, in October 1972. Maybe dentists had collections, but working musicians of all kinds on that circuit usually had one instrument, and were known by the one they chose. Joe with the Wurlitzer piano, the bearded guy with the beat-up black tele, the guy who kept a sunburst Jazz bass in the trunk of his car and only pulled it out when he got to the gig, etc. I had different basses over the years, but never owned or used more than one at a time until I was in my mid 40’s. That nonsense was for rich rock stars and hobbyists!

I think a big reason why people dive into getting more gear is in the hopes of standing out in a very saturated market. If you want your music to be heard and really take off, it takes a lot of effort. I don’t think this is the right state of mind, but I can see some people thinking, “well if I had the GIBSON version, it would sound better,” or “THAT pedal is what’s going to give me the breakthrough sound.” It’s really hard to get people to listen to you in a world where thirty other bands in your area are fighting for the open mic spot, too. For some, I think they see more gear as the answer.

I now have an almost stupid amount of pedals AND modelling devices. I know fully well how and why 😂 no regrets but yes I could drop down to just one modeller. Guitars - this is interesting. 🤨 I can live with one, but only if it’s a Variax and that’s storage for 60 guitar models. Could I be happy with just one acoustic? Yes! But not for long… the joy I get out of pedals is figuring out what they can and can’t do, does it match the sounds in my head ? Having purely the 1 guitar and 1 amp idea wouldn’t work for me, I’d move on 😢. Maybe that would be a good thing? I dunno 🤷 but music is a lot more than just a want, it is for some an absolute NEED. The discipline derived from practice spills over into all aspects of life - much like faith. It’s for some the best means of communication. Music heals, music is LIFE. I’ve seen people get up and play 3 hours with 3 pedals, or a simple BOSS GT1 you can pick up for a third of the average Strymon pedal, perfectly fine and functional. This is a good video, though I think perhaps you’re taking things a bit too far here. We are at a stage where the excesses could be reigned in yes, but let’s not go back to the dark ages. Instead let’s look at level 3 where studying and performing music - like arts like porcelain etc is actually fully valued and indeed it’s possible to actually make a living doing it ?! We have musicians telling other musicians to sleep in the car or van when touring because this is supposed to be the lot of an artist or whatever 😢 that is pure insanity… if there is an area to re-evaluate in our modern life it shouts for the possibility to be an artist without starving.

I remember that beautiful time when having just one cheapest acoustic guitar I could play heavy metal and be happy without pedals and amps and expensive guitars. How can I bring that time back? I mean my brain :)

I still have a copy of the original Guitar Player article that introduced the term “G.A.S.” (then Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). I recall a mental exercise it posed to emphasize a less-is-more approach to determining guitar needs. It was something like, “you’re a trumpet player; how many trumpets do you have?” 🎺🎸🤪

This video kinda made me think about my Katana amp epiphany. Once I connected my Katana to my computer it was like walking into Home Depot. You spend a long time there and only walk out with a few items most of the time. Some might even say the Lowes Zone. So, yes, there is a Katana zone. It's so hard to set it and forget it. 🤣

Love my katana. I get it though, you can get lost in there. It’s a good thing you have to go through the trouble of connecting the computer. I’m too lazy to do it on a regular basis so I stick with the presets that I made. Katana is a great way to not spend money on pedals

I don't think you have to buy all the bullshit that the industry tries to sell us every year. The fewer effects we use in a classic signal chain before a real tube amp, for example, the better. This approach also means fewer problems in the signal chain. It's amazing how little equipment many of our old heroes actually used or still use. Just think of Angus Young, B.B. King and Carlos Santana. These guys never dragged themselves to death with tons of gear. A good amp, two or three great guitars, few or no FX pedals - that's it. Fortunately, that's all rock'n roll needs, because less gear definitely means more sound. Greetings from Germany Mic

Once you have four or five guitars for variety, you should really start operating a one in, one out system. I would say the same with just two amps, and as for pedals, I can easily live without and do, my amp has reverb 🤔

I'd ask you, How many Vinyl or Cds do you Need? Is 50 "Vinyls" are too many? How about 2,000? I don't want to be a Minimalist, or live like a Minimalist. Yes, were damn lucky to be able to afford these guitars & recordings. That's why paying jobs are a good thing.

Funny thing is I’d be much more liberal about how much music you need - I think we just need music. Again, not like air or food - but the more music we have, the richer our lives are.

Hi, Mr. fosset. I have only a fender champion 40 (solid state), very happy with it. I want to buy one pedal to let the amp break out and have a nice tweed sound to play blues. Please tell me what you recomment. Thank you very much. Nobody reply me, i think because i dont have a tube amp, only a cheap solid state, huhuhu😢

Covetousness lurks deeply in the heart of every guitar enthusiast or any other enthusiast for that matter. Lord help me to set my heart on things above where Christ is seated at your right hand! May I be content with what I have and use what I have for Your honor and glory. For me, that is what I desire to matter most.

In a perfect world, everyone would live next to a large music store. I have to drive 60 miles. So, I have to buy online to even try out different things and then sell what doesn't work. The good part is that I have an abundance and should I need something, I don't have to wait. Other than that? If I do make it to Heaven, and Jesus were to hand me an unplugged Hello Kitty Squire, or a Taylor Swift acoustic? As we say in the deep South, I would be smiling like a possum eating shit.

It's a great talking point, and as an instrumentalist you may be right, but as a songwriter and /or as an arranger, I fundamentally disagree. Yes, guitars, like cars, like guns create an every greater need for more guitars, and cars, and guns. Some men may think the same thing about women. But a painter doesn't usually want to paint in one color. Painters generally like a wide palate, and songwriters think the same way. One guitar sound is not the same as another. As a songwriter, I am not looking for that perfect guitar. I am writing a song at the moment that blends an Ibanez 12-string with a Martin 15, with a Jimenez quinto guitar, with a Viper, with piano. And it will go on from there. Would the essence of the song sound the same. Yes, if you think the Allman Brothers sound like Genesis, like Led Zeppelin, like the Moody Blues, like David Bowie. But they don't, do they? There is such a thing as arrangement and it really matters. Music is not about notes. It is about timbre and texture and specific tonality. Theoretically, you could play 'Kashmir' on a recorder, but it would sound like crap, wouldn't it? I recent!y had to give up various instruments because we were moving. I didn't mind. I was bored of the Les Paul. I had an electric guitar that is a secret acoustic guitar, so the acoustic could go. The Gretsch sounded a bit too plummy ... until I no longer had them and I now totally resent the loss. There is a section of music that cries out for a Les Paul. My secret acoustic electric guitar isn't quite an acoustic guitar. Yes, I realise that my quest for the perfect sound for a song could drive me to owning 200 instruments, but maybe I do actually need to own 200 instruments to capture the sounds in my head. And yes, conversely, who cares what I want? I can have no instruments at all and just whistle or bang something. And economics will dictate that I can't have 200 instruments, but I do want as many as I can afford, because I can hear the difference, even if no one else can. But, if you want to go all puritanical, please send me all the instruments you are stripping from your collection as being superfluous. I'll look after them and I'll play all of them, and blend them into my music. Having second thoughts? I thought so.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett Ай бұрын
Not having second thoughts at all 🍻 the point of the video is that you’d still make music even if you only had one instrument if the music is a true passion. Otherwise it’s just something we’re doing for fun and a stuff grab.

Well, I am currently writing my 15th and 16th album, and all my albums run between 60 and 70 minutes, so I would say I am pretty dedicated to music. But if I didn't have a range of instruments at my disposal, I doubt I would record anything because I wouldn't be able to replicate what arrives in my head. And I have no interest in performing. So, no, if I only had one instrument, I would give it away and do something else, unless that one instrument was a keyboard like my Medeli keyboard that replicates most instruments you can think of (although the guitar sampling is bad).
