You'd be surprised how much gold a gold luxury watch contains! But don't take our word for it. See how we take a popular gold Rolex apart and find out its exact gold content by weight.
The watch we used in this picture is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 40, reference number 228238, which is going for around $39,000 in the market as of the day this video was recorded (on 10/8/2020).
Typically, the difference in price between similar stainless steel and gold models of a specific watch brand is significant. Some people think that the price difference is due to the value of gold, but is it really? I mean, the watch movement is not made out of gold, since both gold and stainless timepieces of the same model/brand have the same movements. What's different are the other parts, like the case, bracelet, etc.
So we set out to take the watch apart and weigh those parts, then calculate their total value based on the market price of gold, which was around $1,900 a troy ounce (or $61 a gram) on the day we recorded the video footage.
On the video, you'll see our preferred watchmaker, Yuri Lopez from Chrono Sky (Instagram link below), take the watch apart and set each gold piece on a calibrated scale.
/ chronosky
What interesting thing to mention is that during the last 20 year period, from 2000 to 2020, gold outperformed the US stock market (S&P 500) by a pretty wide margin, making an investment in gold during that same period worth 7 times the initial amount!
On a side note, gold luxury watches, whether for men or women, are made in 18K gold, which is 75% gold by weight. On the video, we also compare the gold weight of the watch to a 24K chunk of gold.
After you watch the video, comment how close was your guess...what percentage of the gold watch's price was due to the dollar value of its gold content?
Happy Guessing!

I had this value proposition when I saw a 1990s 18k Rolex going for $8,500 in 2016-2017. Gold was less but I knew it was perhaps $5000-$6000 on the metal value and the labor value of creating the watch too. Watches have value because of the engineering behind it, and as it's a store of labor. Gold has a value because of the time it takes to mine, its rarity and its refinement process.

I feel surprised as well but I guess if they do go through the effort to make it 18k gold, it is less likely to scratch the watch when you replace the strap? If you put a harder material like steel against gold it's going to easily damage the surface.
@TheCatfishBlues
@TheCatfishBlues 3 жыл бұрын
If they use steel springbars, the steel will damage the gold case (the lug holes) in the long run (just slight micromovements when the watch is used), since its by many factors harder than soft gold.

Actually no. Worth is not the same as Price. These watches cost a lot because of marketing. When you buy a 10k$ Rolex, you spend about 1000 to 1500$ on the actual watch. The other 8500 is the price of the name 'Rolex'. Let's not fool ourselves. Rolex makes about a million watches a year. It's an industrialized, mostly automated proccess. Their movements are no better than any top grade ETA, and even worse than the Coaxials you'll find in Omegas priced half as much.

Day Date is only available in precious metal, but you can do a comparative price ratio and raw gold value ratio by using retail of a model that comes in stainless, as well as 18k, like a Sky Dweller.

Did you peak?
@LordFirestaff
@LordFirestaff 4 жыл бұрын
I legit guessed 20% exactly. However, the watch isn't priced for gold alone. Labor on making the watch has to be accounted for, the movement of the watch, engineering, and paying someone to assemble it, plus retail mark up. You don't wear precious metals in raw form, so it's justified that a watch like this comes with a high price tag.
@Crmjewelers
@Crmjewelers 4 жыл бұрын
Good guess! Yes, you're right. All of those factors affect the price, but remember that "high" is a very gray area.

So a $39,000 gold watch with only approximately $9,000 worth of gold will have a mark up of $30,000 ? Sounds more like price gouging off of a luxury brand name . Unless the watch is a one of a kind time piece then there is no valid justification for a mark up that high . I'm pretty sure that some of the internal mechanism are used in their other models of Rolex watches because it is massed produced . It's not like you have to wait for the watch to be made on every order , the model watch is sitting in many show case retail stores or stock rooms . It's not even a limited edition in design and technology . There is no $39,000 worth of craftsmanship and materials in the watch but it s mostly $39,000 worth of status symbolism that is being paid for .
@Crmjewelers
@Crmjewelers 4 жыл бұрын
I hear you Manny, but I think that another factor that's causing hard assets like watches to become so inflated is a continuously loose Central Bank policy. 🤷‍♂️
@LordFirestaff
@LordFirestaff 4 жыл бұрын
@@mannybruce8950 Yes and no. One thing you should consider is that you're helping to pay quite a few people's salaries when you buy a watch like this. Even if there is roughly $30K worth of profit, that isn't just going into the pocket of one person/company. Rolex employs 4,000 people worldwide. These people are paid very well for the products they put out. Aside from that, there are also the dealers to account for which make a decent commission on the product. I agree it's somewhat of a status symbol, but it creates ways to help the super wealthy shed some of that weight in wealth and spread it around. When you consider non luxury brand watches, like G Shock for example, that you can pick up in Walmart for $200-$400, not a lot of people are making decent money off of something like that. The commissions can't be very high (if any at all), and because they sell in volume, most of the profits go right into the pockets of the manufacturer. I think there is a huge plus side to having luxury brands on the open market by helping a lot of everyday people earn a better living.

Rolex has their own foundry and a team of Metallurgist. They use superior alloys such as platinum or palladium in some cases to stabilize and inhibit tarnishing. Every other timepiece manufacturer simply orders 18kt. It also allows them unique opportunities to come up with some one of a kind products. The dream dust Dials were a direct result of the research team looking at the gold cooling which created a dream dust look and applying that to there dial making.

Yeah, rolex have the best marketing for sure but they very stale with regards to design, complications, movement finishing and innovation. They would rather ad rolo at the start of everything than get around to applying AR on thier watches. Take the boxy ugly sub case, no one really liked it but because of the brand they convinced themselves that it was attractive and toolish, they have finally corrected this after a decade.

Just proves my point, Rolex the most overrated expensive watch out there!!! Your paying for a name that has been very well marketed. In the late 50-60s rolex were a mediocre watch brand running along side Mido for example. Some of the Mido range were more expensive than Rolex, but then Rolex brought in a very good marketing team. There’s really nothing special about Rolex, the movements they use are quite basic (but reliable) there are plenty of watches available today they may not have the reputation of a name like Rolex but certainly just as good if not better.

But again it begs question, are you buying high-end timepiece with its known watchmaking history or are you only buying gold?

Thanks for watching man, but it has nothing to do with Rolex or any other specific brand. No gold watch contains 75% of it's value from gold, otherwise it's a pretty crappy watch.
