Finally, i bought my first aircooled Porsche 911. I will tell you how much i paid, and give you my 6 month ownership review.
Its a 1989 Porsche 911 G Body 3.2 Carrera Sport, aircooled of course. I had been looking to buy an aircooled porsche 911 for a few years, but never had the confidence to proceed, there was always other porsches in the way.
So in this video i will talk about how much i paid, the driving experience, and the bad parts about this aircooled porsche 911.

Enjoyed the review, nice car but the dyno plot is all to pot. If the torque and power plots do not cross at 5252rpm then it's a dud plot........ sorry

You won't be able to run a 9 inch Fuchs on the rear comfortably, it could rub--besides, there really isn't any 9" REAL Fuchs made--you gotta get aftermarket, and those will not be 1 piece forged. Get 8" rears, use a 245/45/16 (Yokohama) tire. Keep 205s on the front, but get 7 " Fuchs for the front. (225's on the front will definitely rub) You can swap your rear 7s to the front, then get 2-8s for the rear. Removing the wing, well, it will increase the lift generated by the car at over about 60 mph..which can be dangerous depending on the situation. 245/45 tires on the rear will help with grip, but if you hate the wing, get a duck tail--it still removes some lift.

Saint- Updated information RE: modern Fuchs. Fuchsfelge makes the same forged 16" rims as when my SC was manufactured- only a different forging process and now lighter. I'm in USA, and the lead time is a couple of months from Germany. Additionally, 9Jx16 do work on this Carrera 3.2, as they do on my SC. The offset is to the inside, not the outside- no rubbing. This is true with both the original 9" and the newer production Fuchsfelge wheels. I like my 7Jx16 wheels with the 205/55 tires in front, but I had to roll the fenders. And 8Jx16 with the 225/50 tires in rear. This is how some early Turbos came. The 9Jx16 take the 245/45 tires, but the handling is a bit different than the 8s. You might like it better, or perhaps not. But the 9s definitely look better.

That's not strictly true, you can put LEDs in any lamp except the headlamps, you can however fit headlamps that were designed to have led bulbs fitted.

Yes, that's what Porsche recommends..but I never removed mine in front, I don't drive it 100MPH to create an issue like that...

Drive it after maybe 20/30 seconds. Keep revs low until upto temp. This car was already at temp tbh because it had been driving all morning. I only put it in the garage to go the start sequence of the video. 👍

Nice. I've a 1996 993 C2 iris blue metallic, 66,000 miles, 6-speed manny tranny, varioram, LSD. No CEL, no oil leaks. Multi-show full-concours winner. I do my own maintenance. I'm never selling it.

I’m the second owner of a 1981 911sc. I’ve had it for over 30 years. The plan was to sell the 911sc once I got a modern 911, 991.1. I love the 991.1 but just couldn’t bring myself to sell the 911sc after I bought the 991.1. Love them both.

I wouldn’t change anything on the car except the steering wheel. I had a 3.2 with G50 and they drive really well. No issues with the heater. Mine had air con, but I had it removed when engine was rebuilt. I’m driving a C4 manual and I’ve made no modifications. Porsche knows what they are doing.

Mine came with a silly Momo, I swapped it for the stock Porsche (bigger diameter) wheel so I can see the gauges..yes, I removed the AC, these cars are NOT designed for AC.

It’s you car and can do with it what you want, but myself, I’ve always felt this was Porsche perfection. I wouldn’t modify a damn thing on that car except the cosmetics to bring back to original and maybe some engine refreshing to keep with the originality of the period, a little extra pop if you will. Your other cars, have at it, imo they are 911s but don’t have the charm and originality this car has. It’s a beautiful spec as it is. But I’ve never been a car modifier, I like what the engineers intended them to be. Thanks.

Summarising what others have said and my experience of an '86 with a 915 box. I hated the box and clunky gear-changes. However, I was living Cologne, Germany and found a specialist who bought, sold, restored and raced 911's at the Ring. He drove mine and said box was fine, just how they were. He also confirmed that rear and front spoilers work in harmony, don't remove one only. I did hoon it once on autobahn at 150 mph and it was planted with both. Lastly, he said, fit 8" rear and 6 or 7 front (never the same width i.e. 7's frt and rear), I did. Great car, gone now, made a decent profit, he bought it from me. :)

Hi I had an F plate in baltic blue and loved it. I still have the 993. Air cooled is an itch that never goes away. Check out that door open and closing noise. Class. The tea tray / whale tail was an option. I think your right to consider removing it as the lines look better in my humble opinion. As for mods, you can always put it back to original if you decide to sell. Good luck and enjoy.

Your shooting and editing is very well done. As far as changes to the car, the longer I have my 1983 SC, the less I want to change it. Have owned mine for about 18 months and know quite a few people who have taken many of their mods off as ownership time has increased.

@@alsatch_ Getting mine was a childhood dream, one which I thought would never happen. The mechanical upgrades and getting everything working has been time well spent. Was planning on making mine a Euro version....H4 headlights, Euro bumperettes, tails lights.....all going to cost thousands to do. Glad I kept it the way it came from the factory. Wish I sat lower as the Porsche seats are tall. The more I drive it, the more I know I can make do. Also would miss the Porsche leather smell I get with my current seats. Cheers

The best modification is the new porsche radio system you put it. I have a 964 and considering that too. Maybe upgrade the aircon system if you live in a hot country. Also agree with the whale tale remove. I would leave the interior the same. But congratulation with the great purchase. None of the newer cars have the charm and character of the old aircooled models! Wish you many happy miles!

Love the car! I just sold my ‘85 Targa. Don’t miss it quite yet, but I’m sure that day will come. I say go for the modifications! As long as they are tasteful, you’ll be good in the long run. I strongly recommend the Steve Wong ECU. Easy upgrade and great guy to work with.

Great cars. I owned a 1989 Guards Red 3.2 Carerra for 4 years in the late 90's/early 2000's and it was a great car. I had to get a new starter motor and some rust on the front bumper treated but no really big bills and sold it for pretty much what I paid for it. I bought a 996 GT3 afterwards which was another brilliant car that I owned for 12 years.

If you check out Yorkshire Car Restoration here on YT, you'll certainly learn a lot about where the rot hides so well on these cars. They are working on 2 air cooled 911s that were absolutely rotten, though one of them in the same red as yours, was thought to be a solid car before work started.

Great video. Thanks for uploading. If possible try to source the hood struts from a flat lid as well. The gas struts on the spoiler cars are significantly stronger than those on the spoiler-less cars to compensate for the added weight of the spoiler. As such, a flat lid with gas struts from a spoiler car will fly up VERY quickly when released.

Good to see you came into the aircooled 911 section aswell. A few years back i also had a speedgelb 997 Carrera S. Since 4 years ago i went back to aircooled and got a 1988 carrera 3.2 a bit like yours with original spoilerkit. If you take the back spoiler off, you actually need to take the front spoiler (lip) off also. They where mounted for more stability at high speed. But they don’t work properly alone ( just front or back) so if you take it off. Do it on both sides. Good luck with your upgrades. Am curious 👌🏽👍

Lovely car. If it were mine, I’d source an original steering wheel. And I’d actually be tempted to remove the Porsche updated radio. I think part of the charm with these is rolling out the paper map on the whale tail and enjoying the adventure. And that would give you some money to sort the light corrosion.

I'd have the sharks fin stone guards at the rear wheel arches. Wouldn't replace those lovely factory sport seats, they just look right. I'd also try and get the original four spoke steering wheel with the rectangular centre horn pad...

915.. box was dreadful. 1st to 3rd avoiding second, until the gearbox oil was warm. I think it was 1986 when the Getrag gearbox first become available, well at least here in Germany. Rather like driving a tractor would be a comparison.. only financially do I regret selling mine.. 73000 km, with 8 and 9" Fuchs. Full Porsche service which was an excellent selling point.. sold for a faction of what was paid here.. Autobahn grand touring.. high speed corners yes.. city centres.. no. * One thing, (I have forgotten the make) but there was an American gearbox oil which was a revelation.. I used this and it literally changed the gearbox from day to night and within just a few minutes into a drive the box was working as good as you could expect for a Porsche 911 of this period.) I should still have 1/2 a can somewhere, I will look it up.. Not the biggest of secrets.. but it worked! Rgds

The Steve Wong chip is a must. Best money you can spend for a smooth performer...if you have the stock muffler, then get the Dansk 1 in, 1 out Sport 70mm muffler...just slightly louder, but really a great sound and quiet while driving but you can hear it a little in the cabin.... and improves the performance. Stock muffler is 60 mm I believe. There is an 80 mm Dansk, too loud. Install is a breeze. If you have the stock catalytic converter, consider a 100 cell cat if its permissible. Decide on any exhaust mods BEFORE you get the chip, because it will be programmed for your exhaust setup, and there is more than one chip setup....

They are only original once. That said, the lure of the personalized 'hotrod' is a strong one too, especially if you resonate with the likes of what magnus walker et al have done over the years. The same car would look good slightly lowered as suggested and perhaps swap in a momo prototipo wheel instead of what is there. Instead of mucking around with wider wheels maybe try slightly wider wheel spacers to fill the guards out a bit and see how it looks then (eg try the wheel spacers that the 930 of the period would have had). Hopefully the previous owner included the the original radio with the sale too. Nice video and nice garage too!

Love the G-body cars. The late 80s with G50 are probably the best and most durable. The impact bumpers have grown on me. Not a fan of the wale tail. I think it destroys the simple lines of the car. The piping on the seats looks out of place (original?). The steering wheel looks out of place.

Couldn't agree more on getting rid of the whale tail. They look sooo much better without. I put a Momo Eagle wheel in my 997 and absolutely love it. With the flat bottom it makes getting in and out much easier and the wheel just looks great too. You have a beautiful car there!

Great new video. Love updates on this car. Definitely get to know car before jumping with mods. Lots possible with these cars - that’s part of the fun! I’d definitely lose the rear wing. Looks much better without IMO and saves a ton of weight where you don’t want it. Then go one mod at a time from there. And enjoy the journey 😊

If you have as much power as that dyno sheet says you probably already have the Steve Wong chip already. Also those rear Fuchs look like 8inch already. No point going from 8 to 9 looks wise on a narrow body car but 7s do look a bit meagre. If it is a late ‘88 (or ‘89) it would have 8s as standard so have a look at the code on the back of the wheel to confirm 👍
