Too many people shy away from discussing money unless they are trying to talk you into buying their course on “How to make $$$!!!”. This is great content and I vote for you to keep it up.

Thanks! Usually if someone's charging you money to tell you how to make money, they're not very good at making money in the way they're teaching you in the paid course - otherwise they'd just be doing that instead of selling you the course. This is something anyone can do and has a huge, gigantic market - happy to share :)

Here's a tip for bag making: make a shallow hole somewhere on your bench to fit exactly the bottom die of your rivet setter. Then get a couple of rivet setting punches from buckleguy and voila, you can set rivets anywhere on a panel or hide of leather (because that benchtop rivet setter only has a small depth)

Being the smart businessman he is, he probably won't tell us and basically give free advertising to his supplier. It'd be much more beneficial for him to negotiate a referral fee or future discounts for himself. If 20 of us order a stamp from them that's easily $700 in sales to the company

That buckle guy press is a godsent. I love mine. I had a bought a little wonder press first and just spent too much time trying to dial the thing. I ended up sending it back buying this cheaper press and being way happier. It just works. Sets things straight every time.

So far I'm doing everything by hand & contemplating making the jump from hobby leather maker to small enterprise. I've had more & more requests for products (I only do small things as I dont have the "heavy equipment"). I am about to invest in equipment, but here in the UK we just dont have the access to the goodies you have in the US. I will get there. Well, I best get back to the Xmas orders I have had in. Thank you for sharing some of your business acumen its greatly appreciated.

@@kristi94 As beginner there is no need for high end tools. Develop your abilities and see what you use most, then if finances allow CAREFULLY purchase high end tools. Watch a LOT of youtube videos, talk to suppliers who do training videos on line and look at the range and their comments ... What are they using? To do what? Study before buying. Whew, I'm glad you clarified everything in the end of the video because for a while there I thought you were leading people down the primrose path. It's important to figure everything into your pricing down to the amount of dye used for each piece, otherwise leather workers would find themselves out of business quick. Then there's the leg work finding shops to carry product and bulk orders are not common. I think AC/DC said it best. It's a long way to the top if you want to Rock N Roll.

Excellent insights, it's always interesting to know how the background business works! Here, you see that diversification is very important, or at least to have a "cash cow" to get the cash flow and a "star product" to advertise the business and still be creative (BCG Matrix). That's also what makes the difference between a local american producer and an mass-producer -> Mass will win at low costs but another can take over any time (see Amazon products). As a brand, you communicate about "values", "quality", "history"... Whether true or fake, it conveys a feeling to the customer, hence he might be more appealed by an 8$ American Made chain, instead of a 2$ "Designed in USA" chain.

This was a great, informative video. I am just starting in the leather working Hobbie, because honestly that is what it is for me at this point in time but videos like this help me understand where I could take this hobby in the future. Now, I'm not sure how much of your business you care to share but I think a video about how you figured out where to have some of your tools of the trade made and a tutorial on the backend of that process would be great. I am atech dummy so when it comes to computers and doing custom designs, I'm pretty much lost but something to help guide me and others in a similar struggle would be so appreciated. I do, in the end I talk about how you're not going to be making $100 an hour 8 hours a day every day because you've got to take into account all of the back end work you're not getting paid for. However I think depreciation is kind of a moot point on a $200 press that will set enough rivets to make you a million dollars in profit before it even thinks of giving up the ghost :)
