Chipping in with some Australian info: I was a Lance Corp in 2CDO and on AU$135k p/a base (with free medical & dental). Pretty sure it’s gone up a little since I left in 2020. We also get rent assistance, basically half my rent was paid (and all of while deployed), or some assistance towards your mortgage. Deployments (usually 5mo) are completely tax free and you get a daily allowance ($200 a day in Afghan), so you’re usually coming home with roughly $70k saved, depending on rank and your spending habits. There was a small difference in pay between 2CDO & SAS during my time, but I’m pretty sure it’s all equal now.

Many Police Department jobs in Cali pay well over $150,000/year and some over $200K a year in just base pay and various bonuses, NOT including benefits (medical, dental, vision, retirement etc) for bottom of the ladder patrol officers with 3.5 years of service. Hours worked are significantly less than military with many working 4 x ten hour shifts per week or 3 x 12 hour shifts per week. With overtime some cops can add another $100k + to their salaries. And most cops will never actually have to shoot their weapon even once during their whole career. Not an easy job and not respected by many folks but on average they earn a LOT more than career military, With a lot less time, or impact on their lives from deployments etc.

Just some unsolicited internet thoughts from someone you did not ask for - Figuring out total comp throughout this vid was more than slightly off 1) BAH should not be used in salaries due to the alternating zip codes which affect this greatly. You used your state of Washington. However, again, this ranges so drastically from zip to zip. Again though, I understand why you factored in your state for this factor. 2) BAS can be used to factor total salary due to the defined amount issued each month based on grade + dependants. However I'd still probably argue against using this since it can vary based on those factors + if you are TDY, deployed, getting per diem. 3) Medical/Dental comes out of your paycheck. Check your LES. Saying "This cost on average $500/month for private sector" Does not mean you tact on $500/m to your salary. 4) Bonuses - The $80k is taxed at 33%, divide that by 6 years you end up with $9,045/yr or $753.75 You NEED to assume it's taxed. Operating within a tax free zone during the time of reenlistment is not a guarantee but is definitely sought after. For salary factoring, it's best to give worst case/bottom line scenario and not if everything works out perfectly, you could "make this". 5) You hit the nail on the head for seps pay, deployment, hazard pay, etc., which can drastically up the total pay. HOWEVER, you mentioned per diem and added it to your total salary. Typically per diem is used to offset the food factor. So, is it wise to add it to total comp when it usually helps break even the food situation for the deployment? It's like trying to pad the numbers. Out of $141,000, I'd say the average salary is probably closer to the $110k baseline. Which aligns with private defense companies employees individuals with around 10 YoE (think Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, NGC, BAE)

Being ex-service and looking at the specialised teams from the outside, the training you have to go through, deployments, separation from family, mental health etc etc etc all special ops team members should be on more money. I know for a fact that as personal security for various clients pays a truck load of $$$$ , it might be time for management in the military to ask.... what can we do to keep the spec ops teams in for longer.👍💪👍💪👍💪🇦🇺🐰

Whatever these guys make, they don't make enough. Service members, particularly operators, should make more than some guy running with a football. That's my opinion.

If you’re gonna go into the military and risk death and dismemberment, you might as well at least try to do so with the best of the best

Most military didn’t join for the money, and regardless of allowances and jump, flight, haz duty, sea pay, it still doesn’t come close.

Do SF soldiers not get BAS? I didn’t see it included. For 2024 that’s $460.25 per month for enlisted. That raises the annual total by $5523.

Ya we do I just forgot to put include it.

I would love to only pay $500/mo for medical insurance. I pay over $1,100/month for health only, no dental and this is just for me, no wife or kids. And, my deductible and coinsurance is high. I think your benefit is underestimated.

Sooooo big question that i’m having a difficult time getting answered, how much do you make during SFAS and Q Course, and do NG make less?
@ValhallaVFT27 күн бұрын
lol wayyyyy less. You’re obviously a lower rank, and you get none of the bonus pays or incentives. I’d say you’re looking at less than half.

How does pay for officers differ? Is it less than enlisted due to fewer jumps and things? Going in as a butter bars and am wondering if this might be the path for me.
@ValhallaVFT21 күн бұрын
Much higher base pay, but they don’t receive any of the speciality or bonus pays that we do. So an E-7 makes in the same general amount as about a Captain.
@thedevguy427221 күн бұрын
@@ValhallaVFT Thanks for the reply, that sounds like the rest of the Army. I guess they justify it with the higher base pay, but enlisted can potentially end up making more with bonuses and other incentives. But then again I guess I’m not joining for pay, I was just curious. Thanks again!
