It's surprisingly affordable. I live in one the poorest countries in EU - Romania, and even without rent I spend about 1000-1200 euro per month. In Spain, France it would be 2000-3000 euros(including rent). And the food is not cheap at all. Mid bill at the restaurant is 20-50 euro.

When I did a working holiday in Asakusa in 2012 I was in a really convenient area (right behind the temple, 5 minutes walk from work, 10 minutes walk from the subway) and I lived in a female-only dormitory sharehouse for around 400 00Y/mo. There were some cheaper dormitories available but they were a bit shadier and this one was a little more expensive because the location was extremely good, there was no long-term contract fee, it was furnished, and the company was English friendly (though about 2/3rds of the tenants were Japanese part-timers). I worked part time and only made about 800 00Y to 1050 00Y per month but when I came home after a whole year I was only CAD $2Kin debt, which isn't bad at all. Albeit I didn't travel a lot, but I didn't do nothing - I took the Shinkansen a few times but I also had my roommates teach me how to book highway busses because they are more affordable. Around the same time, my friend in Kyoto had a studio apartment for 500 00Y/mo (15~20 minute walk from a non-downtown station, but still in the main city). I went back this year and some things weren't significantly more expensive. Apparently there's not been nearly as much inflation as there has been in Canada, I miss it a lot :(

I’m so confused. I’ve always heard Japan - especially Tokyo - is very expensive to live in, but according to the interviewees it’s much cheaper than Los Angeles. It would be difficult to find a small apartment for ¥200,000 here, let alone the additional costs of food, utilities, and entertainment. I guess this is one more reason to move to Japan.

only work visa - need a japanese employer, also requires a degree, bachelors or higher I guess there's also the business manager visa - this comes with a few unique requirements, but you'll need to set up a business in Japan (with a detailed business plan that includes adequate reason for why your business needs to be in Japan) with some initial hiring or capital requirements, -- essentially you need a functioning business (or the means to create a functioning business in Japan).

I live in Tokyo , I'd say at least 400,000 after tax is the bare minimum. These people must have really really low standards. And I'm also coming from a 3rd world country originally.. with 200,000 you're only eating a sad onigiri each day in your 3帖 sharehouse room , ever meal you eat out is 1500 yen on average

Keep in mind that with 200,000 yen per month in Tokyo, they really do mean BARE MINIMUM. You would be living in some of the worst apartments or smallest sharehouses (or noy pay any rent at all), not be able to have any hobbies that cost money, and not be able to eat out unless at places like Yoshinoya or Sukiya.

Japan is for sure less expensive to live in on average vs. similar class cities in United States and Canada. If we take Tokyo vs. Vancouver vs. New York City as examples - these 3 being the top in terms of cost of living index in their respective countries - Tokyo would be 3rd, New York City 2nd and DING DING DING - Vancouver being #1. Surprised about Vancouver? The gas price alone in Vancouver right now is close to over $10 USD a gallon. The average rent for a 1 bedroom in Vancouver consumes over 70% of minimum wage paycheck per person. Remember, Vancouver's wage - and Canada as a whole - is in real numbers 20-30% lower than their American counterparts, after factoring in currency conversion rates. Tokyo, and Japan as a whole, is around 40-50% lower in real numbers vs. the United States. North America is overpriced.
