I’m currently an intern at a big vfx studio in LA. Most senior artists there are telling me to ask for 75-85k starting salary, yet still often mention that our studio pays a bit on the low end. Yeah you might make 30k if you do medical simulations or something, but work on blockbuster films and you can expect a much much higher salary, not to mention overtime pay.

When I started out as a rotoscope artist in Burbank CA, they started me off at 17.50 an hour. Then later on I was promoted to a junior compositor position and bumped up to 21.25 an hour. However, I ended up making 58,000 a year as a rotoscope and only like 49,000 as a compositor because the company at that point had severely reduced overtime opportunities. This was all during 2010-2012, so I'm sure the pricing is a bit more now.

lol in the UK converted to the pound it's a lower as an animator working in TV as a Jr you get 19k, in film it starts at 21. mid in TV get around 27k, in film 37+ depending on where you work seniors i know get around 50+ and freelance comps get around 72k. MPC artist get paid 29k with around 1 to 18 months experience but it's hard to get a paid rise there and it also depends how well you can sell yourself.

I may be a lil late to reply, but, I'll throw in my answer just in case someone's still interested. Most typically, your demo reel and portfolio will speak for itself. But, it never hurts to have a degree of some kind in the area you're looking to apply to. I'm a Digital Graphic Design engineer, so, most places immediately recognize that I can deal with "vfx stuff" from the get-go, but I also know several programming languages, web design, and other disciplines which were in my study program, so naturally, I developed those skills to at least a medium-high level. Nevertheless, all my energy went into amplifying my VFX skills, so that became MY specialty, in spite of my school program and whatnot. Even tho I want to dedicate myself to VFX full time, I'm looking to get a masters in technology, simply because it never hurts to feed your resume with degrees, and it helps broaden your job spectrum and perspective. If the VFX business dries out (which, lets be real, from here on out its just going sky high), I can still apply for jobs in web, programming or graphical design, and have more than good possibilities in getting said job, specially with said combination of degrees, plus any job experience I already, or will eventually have. If you do go for a degree, then I also recommend doing a little bit of everything in your study program, so that you have at the very least a minimum of working experience in those areas before you branch out to what you want to specialize in. Hope this helps to anyone in doubt, and remember, schools and courses are great, but being autodidact will always be your most vital learning tool, no matter what grade or degree you're studying!

@Reunite The British Empire Have fun with student loans, years of education, being a junior medical worker that doesn't even make you more than a vfx artist a month for at least years first and working as much OT as vfx artist nearing a deadline and have no passive income. Oh yea, also it's NOT easy to be a decent skilled doctor (which is what ppl look for). If money is what you look for, go be an entrepreneur. It's the only way to be filthy rich, a job will never get you "rich" lmao. I chose to be a CGI artist and money is something that comes when I'm experienced in the industry.

Wrong. A VFX artist who is senior level makes $50+ per hour, so the average is really closer to $100,000. A top level lead artist who is not a supervisor can get closer to $75 if they are very good. A lot of studios these days have to pay competitive rates in order to get good talent to work there.

If you want to work in VFX be prepared to live in Vancouver/Montreal/UK. If you plan to do it in California there is work but most of it isn't long term. The rates are good but you should expect periods of time between jobs where your salary is zero dollars.

confused by what? Visual effects offer a lot of opportunities, based also on your specialization. let's say you wanna be a modeler, there are tons of people who wants to do it, so you either are veeery good, of you'll struggle to find a well payed job. If you are a lighting artist indeed, you can find more easily a job, because there are less people that do it. Either way, you can make a good salary around the world in vfx, but if you are not passionate, then don't do it. you'll get very sick of it very soon, and you're gonna hate all the overtime .

The difference between the three you've listed is actually a difference in stability. In animation television, you will have more stability towards your next contract because shows usually go on for a few seasons and people usually bounce around inside the studio from show to show as it ends. However this is one of the lowest pay compare to the other per contract. In animated series, or animated films. You typically get a higher salary than animated tv series and a bit more stability compare to live action films. And the pay is usually a little bit lower compare to, for example, spiderverse and avengers endgame. In live action tv series like game of thrones, etc. Pay will be higher than the animated tv series, but you will have considerably more overtime and tears. In live action movies, the pay is great compare to animated films when you hit mid to senior, but the overtime is also harsh and unforgiving. At the end of the day, this is about a dream you're chasing. There are way better jobs out there with higher pay and stability, but if your passion is about art and creativity then this could be it for you. Just remember, it's very hard to get into live action film if you start out doing animated tv series because people in vfx film typically looked down on them. The opposite is also true. CGI short film alone if let's say it's at the quality of AAA movies and ur film is 60 seconds. It will take you 1-2 years if you work on it every single day (not accounting the fact that you will need to LEARN everything yourself such as simulations, rigging, animation, some programming, modelling, rendering. They are all a different ball game man. Probably will take you 8 years to be advanced in all of these and 2 full years of commitment to execute the 60 seconds film.
