I watched the entire video just because of how much I enjoyed that. I learned a good amount because of it… everyone else would’ve forced me to watch for the reveal at the end… which would’ve caused me to skip to the end. Thanks for keeping it real

Hey Matt. I have been uploading clips to Pond5 for about 5 years. At first, I uploaded to several stock houses like Adobe (made some money), but ultimately I made an exclusive arrangement with Pond5 to receive 60% of the sale price of each clip. I have about 300 clips that I've accumulated over the years including shots I purposely went out to shoot just for stock. Frankly, I really enjoy doing these shots for Pond5 since I'm on my own, can take as much time as I like w/o a producer looking over my shoulder saying we need to finish it up and be in another location by 2pm, etc. What is also fascinating is seeing what shots sell. I have a shot I did years ago of people in midtown Manhattan crossing the street, a very telephoto shot, that sold 11 times. Others that I thought were great, never. Go figure. I would definitely love to see you do more stock shot videos.

Pond5 got acquired by Shutterstock in May of last year and while I’m hoping they don’t make any changes to it, knowing how Shutterstock acts like the Amazon of the stock image market they’ll probably kick off a faster race to the bottom with lower pricing and lower rates. Hope I’m wrong though cause I like Pond5 even with their lackluster sales.

Definitely interested in more content like this, would love to see what you think of selling through wirestock, black-box or other companies that send out stock to all the other sites at once. Also being a videographer myself, we still do take photos here and there, would like to sell some of those too!

Great video and a very clever way to describe it. I enjoyed it tbh. A fresh look from a fresh perspective. Just a couple add ons, you don't sell your media, rather the buyer selects a license, there are multiple levels of licensing, I have sold them all but never sold the rights to any of my media, I would but the opportunity has never presented itself. I have videos I have sold over and over again, you don't even need a fancy camera, my canon got ran over so I started using my iPhone 12, and I was shocked when they started to outsell my pro videos, so I thought that's what they were but come to find out, lifestyles and current events outsell everything. I am an editorial videographer so I am always looking at trends, newsworthy as people will be telling the same stories for years, most of my clips are timeless. I have 20 year old footage from my early days, it sells too. You don't have to be a wedding photographer or know all the fancy terms, whip out your phone and go. I found value in this video, so I want to add some back. This is NOT a get rich quick scheme like Mattt said, you will put a LOT of hours in for little to no reward. It takes years to even break past the $5k mark.. I made about 10 grand last year, far from where I want to. be but if you have ever played world of warcraft, I did for 10 years, it is exactly like that lol, grind man.. I film everyday, all of the time. One thing I will say, do not buy cheap hard drives to store your masters on, never delete, I also sell screenshots from gopro footage, I will sell the sound too at some point, another reason is, you will get better and better at editing and will realize you messed up later on but if you still have the masters, you are good!!! Biggest advice I can add. I know that was a lot but trust me, this is a deep ocean and there are no limits except time. Peace

Hi Matt, this video was very helpful to me for understanding the best way to go about placing my clips on multiple sites. About 4 years ago I put five video clips on Adobe stock, but haven't done anything since then. This is the year I upload more! Thanks for the inspiration! 😀👍

The absolute key to selling stock is volume and uploading regular. Also keep in mind that it can take an image several month to recycle itself into a sale. Sometimes I will upload and wont see it start selling till a year later. The reason why most people stop is that dont see an instant income, stock is a long game.

Matt, nice video. Glad you are sharing this info with film makers. I no longer play the stock photo and video market as things have drastically changed after 2008. Before 2008 royalty free stock was a small market. Much better money was made in rights managed. I was a fairly big player at the time and was pulling in anywhere between $75,000 to $125,000 a year in stock photography (Corbis and Getty). I mention this only to share how the market has changed. This is also what happened to musicians when iTunes and other music downloading sites started up. This is the reason many of those musicals from the 80's are on the road preforming concerts in their 70's today. I think you gave an honest assessment to folks about the money they can expect early on. Thanks for sharing and I encourage folks who want to make a few extra bucks to upload your photos and videos and see if it is for them.

I agree. I got in 2006 and worked my butt off in this Stock Footage dream as a young man. Apart from the diminishing payout, your location and quality content play an important part. Because of this, some people, like me, never made any money except for a penny or two for so much hard work.

can't there be a way to just cut out the middle man? By creating a designated youtube channel showcasing your (watermarked) stock footage with a button to purchase and then the buyer can download a clean version? that would be great. But Im probably dreaming too big

About a year or so before the pandemic, I started shooting stock uploading to Blackbox. They sold themselves as a major resource for stock footage for multiple stock footage sites. I have yet to sell anything through them. My library of stock footage isn't extensive, yet. But, to be honest, I never thought about approaching Pond5, Adobe, or Artgrid directly. Your video changes that. So, I will start shooting again and trying these sites that you mention.
