I wonder if mounting it down low (access from under the car?) maybe gravity would help catch more oil??? Also, can a catch can replace the AOS? Why would a car need both? Thank you, great videos! -Tom.

@@aboyandhisdog hey thanks for the comment, I did look to mount it down low with access from below but its still quite limited on positioning. But yes mounting down lower should reduce any additional oil not caught making its way back up. I wouldn’t remove the factory AOS, adding an additional helps to remove any excess oil. The AOS systems or ‘positive crankcase ventilation, main job is to remove any exhaust gasses and pressure from inside the engine, this can cause oil leaks and reduce bhp, a byproduct of it is oil vapour which is then circulated back round into the engine, but this contains oil vapour and exhaust gasses which ideally you want clean cool air with maximum oxygen, for the best combustion. Plus the oil and carbon clogs up valve etc.

@@GarageTechAutomotive Appreciate you getting back to me. I have a non-GDI engine (997.1 C2) and so far, the AOS is within spec. I kind of dread the day I have to R&R it as access is problematic. I know this "catch can" discussion is primarily regarding the GDI engines. Do you think there is much if anything to be gained by adding a catch can to a port injection engine? Thanks!

I'm thinking that the install position of the catch can and length of the pipes can be the cause of not catching much oil? I have a Boxster S 2009 3.4L with the same air intake installed and I'm looking fwd to install the oil catch tank.

Hey, good luck with the install, let me know how it goes and where you position yours. Space is quite limited especially finding somewhere where it’s easy to access.

Any updates on oil getting into the intake and pipe sizes, did your car blow slight amount of smoke on start up before fitting the catch can ? Thanks Nigel
@GarageTechAutomotive2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, I find there’s still a small amount of oil getting through but obviously not as much as before as the catch can is collecting some, I’m actually about to experiment with another can and larger pipe work to see how that fairs. I’ll share the link to the connectors on your other comment 👍🏼

Hi, I was expecting to see a bit more oil than that? Do you think that reducing the original pipe size down to 10mm is having any effect?
@GarageTechAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
Hi, difficult one really as I have a few doubts with this catch can, it’s something I’m going to experiment with. Increasing the pipe size is an easy fix, but there will still be the same 10mm restriction within the internals of the can which you can’t change. Also, the filter element doesn’t seem efficient enough as there was more oil than expected still getting back into the intake.

@@GarageTechAutomotive Good luck with it 👍👍 It will be interesting to see if you can come up with anything??

@@GarageTechAutomotive Any particular catch cans you're looking into that seem like they might have a better design? I was looking at the pricier Mishimoto with a slightly different design originally but I'll shop around a bit more. For 1000mi of normal driving this seems like a good amount of oil to me. I wonder how much you'd get after a hard day on the track!
