If you have a good or great HVAC company that has taken care of you for years then give them the business for a new system. I have used a one man operation (he is the owner and operator without lots of technicians) for 20+ years and has always been 100% honest in any service my HVAC system needed. Finally at 30 years old we decided to replace the system and I went with him, no questions asked.

Great video! So I live in south central Wisconsin and I have a 17 year old system that is on it way out. The quote I have is from a contractor that bailed me out of a jam twice when my old contractors that I use to build my home couldn’t or wouldn’t. So the quote contains equipment that I don’t currently have on my old system. The quote is for $21k with a cash discount to 18k. We’re looking at a heat pump, ionization, and a new thermostat as new items not currently on my old system. I want to get more quotes but I fear being stranded again when I need a contractor to come out and help. There are only two that offer 24hr service and one is my old HVAC contractor and the other is the one that gave me the quote. The one that gave me the quote is from a large(+40k population) city but they do a lot of work in this area. I’m not sure what to do?

Thank you for your videos. I'm considering a basic ac or a dual fuel upgrade, and live in eastern Nebraska, (we have all four seasons). Currently the HVAC system here is an 80% single stage, single speed blower furnace, by Carrier, 16+ years old and generic ac almost 23 years old, all work well but are aging and it is time to think about replacing them or at least the ac unit. Does it make sense to go to a duel fuel set up using the old gas furnace as the back up heat source? Is the ac upgrade better for this climate? Regarding doing the ac upgrade, do you prefer Lennox or Carrier? Regarding the heat pump upgrade is there a brand you prefer?

I got a quote for a new HVAC, 14 SEER heat pump, variable speed air handler & 4” filter. Another company quoted similar price but suggested electrostatic filter (which he said was better than standard 1 in and not as good as 4 in) and a UV light. 1) are theses comparable or is it apples to oranges? 2) If I go with the 1st co (4 in filter), should I add a UV light? Or is it even needed with additional capabilities of 4 in filter?
@hvacstandard
@hvacstandard Жыл бұрын
Personally I would never ever go with an electrostatic filter. They do stop a lot, including the air flow. The static pressure across an electrostatic is insane and if it's the type you have to clean, you will never really get it clean. Ever. And if it's the electrostatic type that you replace the pads, they are crazy high prices for replacement pads and they still slow your air flow, increase static pressure cause the equipment to fail sooner and the efficiency to drop. They are not the way to go. I did not know there were many companies doing them still. It's a filter for the 80s or 90s. Other filters have came a long way . 4" or like I use the 5" air bear, are made to stop the dust n things and still allow the air to flow thru with very minor restriction. The filters being wider actually allow more air than a one inch due to the amount of surface area. The thinkness doesn't have anything to do with how much dust it will stop. This is a major misconception. 4 or 5 inch disposable is the better way to go. Hope this helps. Be sure to subscribe and have a great day!

@@hvacstandard Thank you! I went with 4 in filter, 13 Merv rated. The only company among the 4 bids who said they could fit it. The air handler butts up to hot water heater. He said there’s 16 inches behind it (it’s laid out lengthwise). He said they would have to adjust the placement to install. Guess the other 3 companies didn’t want to bother? Or, maybe the knowledge of the guys who came out to do bid varied? The one I went with didn’t say yes right away, he said he would get back to me after he was sure he could find an air handler the right size to fit with 4 in filter.

Hundreds of thousands of homeless drug addicts certainly seem to enjoy that weather. As for cost of living, no thanks! I could afford to buy a new HVAC system every year with the money I save by not living there! Do you realize you pay in one month of property taxes what most of us outside California pay every year? Gas prices, crime, traffic, etc.. CA is a nice place to visit. I'll take real freedom and 4 seasons any day!

You did not miss the specific pricing because there wasn't any. Although I did say that it all depended on where you're at. I gave ranges but there are too many variables for your area on what the exact price would be. The price for a system in New York City versus Farmington Missouri versus Minneapolis versus Lafayette Indiana are all going to be way different. Is very specific to the area that you're in. It's impossible for me to give you an exact price not knowing what equipment you want and what the area is. Thanks for watching! Have a great day.

Pricing for such items can vary but typically an evaporator without a case can cost your contractor minimum $300.00 to $900.00 Condensers will cost him or her approximately $700 to $2,500.00 and a gas furnace $700.00 to $2,000.00 Some contractors will double the cost of units and charge approximately $100.00 per hour for installation Good luck

OK Andy i have a question did i get ripped off? gold medal installed a 80% afue 88k btu furnace 2 stage VS lennox with 3.5 ton MLX17C1 CONDENSER for a 1529 sq ft i think unit is too big ?!? cycling off and on anywhere between 5 to 8 min tops ! so they thru in a wifi prestige honeywell thermostat and installed the 2 new lines (big copper and thin copper ) from condenser to air handler hauled away my old unit. gave me 10 yr warranty parts and labor CHARGED ME 14K EVEN , i live in NJ. DID THEY GET ME ANDY? I FEEL LIKE IT SHOULD"VE BEEN AROUND 10-12K WHAT YOU THINK?
@hvacstandard
@hvacstandard 11 ай бұрын
Every area is different on pricing. Really I wouldn't think 14 is too much in some areas. Where I am in the Midwest 14 for an 80% furnace is too much but I wouldn't buy an 80% afue furnace either. But for the most part across the states the average these days for a system is anywhere between 10 to 20 for conventional systems. The 10 thousand ones are far n few in between these days. Most systems in my area are 12 to 18 so I really wouldn't think 14 is awful. The only way to know if the size is right is by seeing the load calculation the contractor did on your house. I have a video on sizing as well. But the only way to know the CORRECT size is with the load calculation. If they didn't do one.... then they were guessing. But if you ask them to see it, they should be able to show you and it will tell you the exact btus needed for your home. Sq ft is not anywhere near enough info you know accurately. Hope this helps! So you didn't actually say anything about actual costs. There should be a formula... the cost of eqpt plus 25% labor. So if a unit is 10k for 5 ton 17 seer var split system, then labor would be $2500= $12,500

My top three for quality would be Amana, trane and Lenox. Higher price does not always mean better quality. Carrier has proven that to our industry.

@@Joey-fs7ro Many years ago I had a so called good quality furnace in another house I owned installed. High efficiency and all that. The darn thing kept blowing igniters. The town would get occasional power surges. The first two were covered under warranty. The third one wasn’t and not cheap when you add parts and service call. Fixed the problem by moving. LOL.

Complaining about $5 a gallon of gas when you are justifying higher prices for HVAC. Do you expect your wage to be this much higher while gas stayed the same?? 😂
@hvacstandard
@hvacstandard Жыл бұрын
Don't think I said much about wages in other than yes wages nation wide are going up in most industries due to the cost of living increasing. And as for the cost of a piece of equipment getting more expensive, that's on the manufacturers not the dealer. The dealer is just trying to make a fair profit so they can remain in business. So yah, 5 dollar a gallon gas is way too much. Just the same as everything else these days. Would you rather I pick on the dairy industry and bitch about the cost of milk. Or maybe the auto industry for the price of some of these trucks a contractor has to buy. I mean I could probably pick bout any industry really. What people dont typically understand is the cost of everything goes up for everyone. Even the contractors. Most people don't realize the costs that are involved in operating that business. They just think that the contractor is profiting more when price go up and that is not how the profit margin works in a business. But thanks for watching and come on back if you have anymore questions. Have a great day.
@kaisersouze41
@kaisersouze41 Жыл бұрын
@@hvacstandard My comment was based on you talking about the price of gas. You could very easily say the price of gas has gone up as the price of everything else has but you chose to single out gas. I'd absolutely agree that the price of gas has gone up but so has the price of other things as well (including those you mentioned). Some being inflation and others being inflation/HIGHER profit margin.
