Doing the paperwork to bring a new car or motorcycle home is an exciting time and in there, often, we get tempted to stretch for a vehicle that feels like a good upgrade but it means we end up stretching our budgets further than we planned. That is a source of worry. And worrying? It's not a way to live, right? Kartikeya Singhee discusses how to approach the new car/bike budget with the idea that your new car or motorcycle needs to do whatever you want it to do without worry.

Back in 2021 when i decided to get myself a bike i had a budget if 2 lakhs (on road ). I was planning to stretch it by 30k and get the duke 200, but then made up my mind and bought the rtr 200 4v for 1.75L. That was a good move, finished off the loan in a year, the bike doesent demand any extra care , im hvin fun 😀. Used up the left over 25k out of my 2L budget on a good helmet, jacket, gloves......whch aftr a year and half helped me survive a crash without a scratch.

I could not agree with this more! Fell into the trappings of an aspirational purchase when it came to a car, overstretched, and then felt every bump on the road and every tiny scratch on the body. And, now when I'm buying a bike, I really don't want to worry about it, I want to ride, I want to live a bit of my life through it. And, this perspective just re-enforces that belief. Thank you so much for your words, Kartikeya!

I think society influenced to buy a car and later regret it. What ever you buy plan maintence cost before buy. I know someone who bought car without their parking lot, initially manage to get space from neighborhood now they neighbor own one, they force to park their car at month rent of 1500

Totally agree with your point. Since 2017, my dad had this dream of geting a Jeep compass. It used to cost about 60% of his annual income during its initial launch. Due to different financial commitments he waited a little longer before making the purchase. Then came covid and he lost his previous job, he realised that there wasnt much of a time left to wait and just after he got his new job and covid cases got reduced by the end of 2021, he decided to make his dream purchase even though the car costed way more than before. We took the delivery of our Compass model S on January 2022 and it was the best day of our lives. But it wasnt all good. Previously we used own a 2009 model Suzuki Ritz, we still have it and it’s in perfect condition. It was a hell lot of fun car to drive, and my dad used to rock it while driving. In the initial stages after buying the car, it always looked like he was trying to protect the car instead of enjoying driving it. He used to go at a slower pace than he is used to and became a little more careful. It was a heartbreaking day when the car had its first minor accident, when a scooter guy came and hit on the rear bumper of our parked car, it was just returning home after having ceramic coating. It’s been over an year since the purchase and thankfully the car is still in its showroom condition. Although we love the car and it was in all sense a dream come true for my dad and a big motivation for me, there’s always a sense of extra care and fear of damage to the vehicle. With time these fear does come down and I realise that I feared more than my dad. He keeps on saying, he bought the car to protect us on the road. But still, before making any such decision, I would recommend you to think twice and interospect about how much risk you are ready to take and what’s the purpose for the purchase.

The line, "You should own the vehicle not you your vehicle owns you" completely blew my mind. I'm a big yamaha fan and was planning to get MT15 but after the Speed 400 buzz in the market I was more attracted to it despite knowing it's milage nd maintanence. Surely I'm gonna get the MT-15 as i currently own a R15 V2 from 2017 which still runs very smooth without a engine problem since then. Kudos to team MotorInc 💙

Very interesting insight! I kind of made myself accept that vehicles are prone to get damaged here and there, especially due to the traffic sense (or the lack of it) in India. I ended up buying a secondhand Corolla Altis for 1/10th of it’s showroom price and had some of the best experiences through it! Acceptance is the key. 😄

I never imagined to be paying 20k per year for zero dep insurance renewal from the dealership. Also spending around 35k for extended warranty for 4 years was not something I was expecting above the cost of the final price of the car. I've also spent more than 1 lakh in petrol over the last year and a half. So yeah, if I had maxed out my budget while purchasing, I would have been unable to buy all this and gotten stuck now. I am also expecting to spend between 25-40k on tyres within the coming year, so that's another extra thing to plan.

I totally agree with this and realised this recently personally. I had 2 issues back to back one with my car and another with my bike. I just straight went to the service centre and fixed these issues and was so relieved and could use these machines without a fuss. Earlier i used to worry a lot about these things and would end spending unwillingly. You should always get what you can afford and maintain. It's not just about one time buying, you have to use them maintain them. I've seen People buy cars and cannot pay the fuel price to use them.

A couple of years ago, I bought a pre-owned CBR 250R. It was 10 years old and needed some care , but the engine was immaculate and for less than 40K it was a steal. Since then, I've had immense fun on it, from weekend rides to trips. And I've spent more on riding gear than what I bought it for. Now that I can, I am ready to buy a more expensive motorcycle straight from the showroom floor.

It's hard to find videos of a well-articulated perspective regarding vehicles (pretty much any other topic for that matter). Really appreciate the thought process that you guys put into before starting an idea for a video. I have been wanting to buy an RE with a budget of 3L (kept aside 7L in total to make this 3L purchase, to counteract my purchase through same amount in savings). But I still want to wait and accumulate another 2-3 L before making the purchase. Because it's only when we start using a vehicle that we truly get an understanding of what we need as accessories to enjoy the ride and what we don't need. I don't want to be that guy that makes hasty decisions out of love just for the sake of it. I wanna savor every moment I spend with the bike and I don't want unplanned/unexpected expenses/dents for the vehicle to ruin my experience. Thank you once again for making such videos. More people will be able to make an informed decision before spending huge amounts on these things.

I purchased riding gear and drove it without worrying too much. The bike was forgiving when i went through a massive pothole at speed! Now that im comfortable with high speeds i want to upgrade something more nimble like duke. 390 duke feels over kill for my skill level but anything less that 250cc class would bore me. It’s amazing how some people think of impressing others with their purchase rather than to satisfy their own needs and happiness. Especially when it comes to vehicles don’t take a lot of loan to buy because vehicles are a depreciating asset, shop within your limits and enjoy your vehicle to the fullest. Thanks so much for this video. Highly appreciated 👍

I have question now. Lets say I'm a fresher who just started working. I have no family pressure or living expenses. Lets say I start a decent 4LPA package. Would you recommend me getting a motorcycle that is nearly 3L (V strom 250) or lower the budget according to 50% rule and get a gixxer 250SF/ Xpulse. I will still be getting it on emi's with the said 20/10/4 rule except I can pay more interest as I don't have any other financial responsibility. I wish someone mature could shed some light to this dilemma of mine. Appreciate it, thank you. Love this channel, made me learn so much more about motorcycle and cars, developing a passion for it.

Very well articulated. Since these are aspirational purchases, sometimes we lose the sense of value and end up burdening ourselves. It is hard but who can master their minds they are the winners here. Other than the income and emi ratios, if you have equal amount of savings of what you are buying then it is much easier to deal with with great levels of confidence. For example, buying a 10l car then you should have at least 10l savings in your account at least.

We bought the petrol 2018 Hyundai Tucson after we permanently settled in Kerala. We thought it will be our only car and we had compass, tucson, creta, karoq, tiguan etc. We bought the tucson thinking that it will be our only car. Just to protect our car, we built a seperate garage which allows 2 cars to park. This was because of the size of the vehicle, and it was damn hard for parking in small towns and very impractical for daily town commutes and my father would checking the car often after we parked the car road side. So we bought a year back 2018 santro for daily use. But after a year, it had clutch issues and power was so poor. So we upgraded to i10 nios. Now we are planning to sell the tucson for an electric car because we almost spend 10-12k rupees per month for petrol only. And we will sell the i10 after my graduation.

Lot of wisdom packed in small video. Hats off to Motorinc for similar great content on your channel. I went against the market trend of show-baazi and bought Tata Tigor petrol. Literally No one buys this car. But it has spot on handling, steering, great suspension. Cabin comfort is great. Big boot that satisfied my touring requirements. Engine is not spunky and is not that refined. But the car is 4* safety rated. It is also very compact so I feel no stress when driving through tight spots, city traffic etc. With BH registration it costed me just ₹8L. Which is much less than 3 times my annual earnings. I don't worry too much on mileage as I know I haven't spent crazy amount upfront anyways. And I only took 40% of cost as loan, that too to save some liquidity. I may look small, insignificant in front of other 95% financed hulking "SUVs". But I know I have made the most practical decision both requirement wise and money wise. In a way I am standing out in the crowd now and I like it 😅

You are right. There was a phase when my car controlled my happiness. Was always thinking about someone ruining the car paint, what if it gets a dent etc. Spent a lot on keeping it in showroom like condition and purchasing additional accessories. And the irony is I didn't go for many trips. Got transferred to another location as part of job role. Sold the car. I'm much more peaceful now. ✌️

Great video and all as always motorinc, the cherry on top was that even after having a couple of bikes and cars through different finance methods like emi’s and all… even Karthikeya fumbled initially while explaining emi… it is very confusing and too much for my brain I just save up and buy the vehicle… and also that “spend no more than half of your income “ on such things,is actually something that has been a family lineage for us lol..

Hullo again! And that’s awesome - better to spend knowing fully well you can afford it. And hello to the family!

Thank you so much for this eye opener. I am planning to buy a car or at least my family thinks that I should buy one (it's high time, long overdue, etc.). Going by the logic given in this video, I can (or I should) spend only up to 6.5 Lakhs. Primary requirements are a journey from A2B, safety, high ground clearance and big boot. Reverse parking camera and infotainment system if available would be good. Not a fan of hatchbacks. So given these facts, what's the best option you can suggest? Fuel cost can be ignored. Running is 7-10k KMs in a year

I was thinking between Baleno top spec and Fronx mid spec. I do understand by this video that for me it's a better call to choose Baleno top spec, but I was thinking one thing. The social status from crossover like fronx is bigger than hatchback Baleno. Also the fronx looks better than Baleno in my opinion. So by all physical measurements even if Baleno seems perfect for me, i can't shrug off the psychological impact of Fronx. What should I do if anyone can help? Also, do paying emi for 8 years let's say is bad if I'm planning to own the car for 10 yrs atleast?

Thank You, this was a much needed advice. I am currently looking to buy, if I hadn't watched this video I would've made a stupid financial decision. So now I have two options wait and save more for a 160cc or downgrade to 125cc and buy now. Don't really want to wait anymore since I've been planning and doing my research for a few months and I'm running out of patience. Don't really want to downgrade either since there not really good options in the 125cc segment and I'd probably get bored soon with that limited power.

Wow wow wow, we are at very much the same frequency. I also think the same. The joy you get when you do not have the stress and tension of owning something costly and that you make all use of it and are carefree is enormous. I have seen people spending on Harrier and XUVs and are afraid to do a particular stretch or hardly take it out twice or thrice in a month, what a waste of money. Rather buy a Brezza or Sonet and make full use of it and be tension free.

Hi kartikey, Thank you for sharing such an informative video with us. You mentioned storing. Multiple sets of tires for your motorcycles, my question to you is, how long can you store then until they dehydrate and start to crack, also if you could share a few tips on preservation of tyres in storage, that would be immensely appreciated. 100% !! I did same in my first car purchase. Its a Base variant coz single engine option - many told just base variant go get a second hand top variant? To me its a great choice coz i can fit accessories according to my taste and NEED. Second hand wont suit me. Im like, get a new one enjoy atleast five years (not an enthusiast) But engine is very reliable and safe to an extent too I spent on accessories which i felt much much needed (i put seat cover after 5 months. Coz my mind said many times that 'yes u have to put seat cover ') I didnt run behind brand, i run behind reliable brand and superior after sales support I use the car fully by spending less Finally im super happy with my car, stress free ownership. Im not worrying about my car. It serves the purpose in a great way. Dont be emotional , do the math purchase it then fell in love with it

this is what I followed with my recent purchase: went for loan (67% of onroad amount); didnt go beyond my CTC amount no matter what; (my reasoning: with 30% of average annual saving I should be able to virtually recoup the onroad amount in ~4years) was aspiring AT (preferably TC) but not a deal breaker since I enjoy MT; if price delta is not much then prefer top model

I wish there were ways to buy directly from the manufacturer, it would make this thought process easier to adapt, the reason being I'm fed up from the fact that there are showrooms and dealerships who try every trick in the book to manipulate , sometimes dupe customers. They add mental stress on customers to buy this variant , get this insurance, get that accessories or we wont deliver the vehicle on time
@motorinc
@motorinc Жыл бұрын
True. The process can be complex and manipulative which doesn’t help. Not all dealers though
