Speed generally scales to the square root of power (that is, the equations for power have a v^2 term in there). That 4% increase in power output between the two tests (185/178 = 1.039...) would suggest a 2% increase in speed (sqrt(185/178) = 1.019...) ... meaning that if you went 19.9mph at 178W, you should be able to go 20.3mph (19.9 * 1.019...) at 185W, even on the stock wheels. This would suggest that the deep-dish wheels only made a tiny difference at these speeds. :-(

When you factor in the 7 watt difference between the two rides the speed is almost identical. That and we don't know how old the aluminum wheels were or how recently the bearings had been serviced. If he bent his elbows while on the Aluminum wheels he would have gone significantly faster simply by reducing the drag on his frontal load.

@aussiefreediver
@aussiefreediver 2 жыл бұрын
@@GCPerformance18 I thought you did a fantastic job in holding a similar profile. The point I was trying to make (arguably poorly) is that if someone were to bend their arms ever so slightly, the reduction in aero drag would be more significant than what we saw from the wheels in your video, which, when you do the math based on the 7 watt delta was negligible at best and zero at worst. Coupled with the fact the aero wheels would be far less pleasant in cross winds it's hardly a sell. In light of this, I think it would be very interesting to do the same test at 220-240 watts (Still very achievable for a cyclist dropping 2k on wheels). I suspect we'd see a significant difference at that point. Making the wheels a far more attractive purchase. Great channel nevertheless, you're great in front of a camera.

You did your best to do this test the right way - same body position, same tires, tubes (pressure wasn't mentioned, but seems likely), and posted the wattage difference. That wattage difference accounted for about .2 mph, but that's understandable since it is difficult to hold a steady wattage like that. I've seen most of the bigger channels do this type of test with too many other variables, such as different tires or very windy conditions, which is pointless. Great video!

An honest video, with a correct result I think. Using a cycling wattage calculator we can see that if you go 19.9mph at 178w that means you should go 20.2 at 185w. So you got 0.2mph free speed around 20mph or 1%. This is actually expected, and many people (myself included) find similar results when testing deep wheels at these speeds and wattages. I know, there are a couple of outliers on youtube, that report waaay higher gains, but these had a clear incentive to push these wheels and I dont trust their results at all. Main take away from this is that you should ride the wheels you like. Buy what makes you happy, because that is why you ride your road bike anyway. I think deep carbon wheels will make you happy ;) An other thing to note is that you rarely see 60mm deep wheels anymore in the pro peleton, even on flat races most riders seem to prefer a more medium or even shallow depth. It doesn't slow them down much.

The video will have much more value if you can do either maintain 25 mph and see wattage differences (since your route is flat and no wind), or do a 300W for 10 km and see what is the time and speed differences...

I think if the wattage was higher I could have the wheels shine better, not gonna lie. I felt it very hard to control the pedal stroke with those wheels on such a flat surface. They wanted to go, so that’s why it was 185 I wanted to keep it a normal number for all of us to relate too but I think it needs to be a higher number of watts. Where as with the stock alloy wheels I felt like I was working the whole 7 miles to stay around 180 watts. Also for reference. He motor paced me the whole way back behind a scooter and I was doing 23-24 behind him only doing 130-140 watts. The wheels at thag depth shine at higher speeds

@@GCPerformance18 thanks for the reply, appreciated ... sorry, no criticism of you or your work intended ~ all good stuff. I believe that you're right though, aero advantages are more significant at higher road speeds. I'm 65 and a lower power rider, my average power over 7 miles would be about the 180W that you chose, so you've given me a good indication of what carbon aero wheels might reward me with if I decide to go down that path. I'm going to have to balance any potential speed advantage with the stability I get from my lower profile campag Zondas though ~ it gets quite windy here due to sea breezes.

To the people saying the 7 watts extra power are equivalent to .5 miles per hour extra speed. That's part of it but according to a calculator it's about 14 extra watts required to go 20.4 instead of 19.9. So there is a measurable benefit. 7 watts at around 20 miles per hour. That's actually quite a lot ~3-4%. Outside of that, one needs to consider that this is a real world test with sample size 1 for each. Other than that you can actually calculate down the watts saved in a wind tunnel at 30 miles per hour to pretty much every speed.

Some of the biggest gains are body position / fit, aero helmet, kit, tire setup (low rolling resistance, proper psi, tubeless or latex tubes) and honest hard work to get faster. People want an easy answer and aero wheels are bling and look cool so nothing wrong with getting them but the aero gains here aren't a major factor unless you are racing and pushing really fast speeds. Also if you fit a tire size larger than is optimal for your aero wheels then you have unknowingly nerfed any real aero benefit.

Carbon vs aluminium: Watts/mph: Carbon: 185/21.4 = 8.6 W per mph Stock. : 180/19.9 = 9.0 W per mph There is a small difference. Perhaps the biggest difference is the psychomotoric feedback - it was easier for you to put your force into the carbon wheels - this is interesting to discuss. I’m guessing the carbon has an advantage at higher speeds due to aerodynamics and can accelerate faster due to (presumably) lower inertia

Been thinking about this for a minute. I have watched a lot of videos.. the ones who say the carbon are faster always end up using more watts and end up with higher speed. ( think about that) yet other people who say there are no difference also how same or basically same wattage… i feel like at lower speeds the tests are useless. I feel like testing at 30 mph would be a better test. Where aero is sooo much more than at 20 or so. Everyone wants to do beginner level paces.. well.. beginners aren’t needing aero wheels… advanced riders are which are the ones that crank 400 watts at a time and can hold closer to that number.. I may have forgot a few details, but that’s a trend I noticed,

They are tubeless and hooked so I can run any tire on them. 4. It's Shimano so I can service the hubs easier myself with to spanners costing 20 dollars. 5. The wheels are wider so I can put on larger tires without getting a very huge light bulb effect. 6. It's always nice to have nice gear if you can afford it. It seems the biggest difference is the look. On the shallow alloys you kind if looked a casual endurance rider while the carbon rims looked so much more aggressive. There is a little more to the story though. Everybody always just compares numbers because that's what is most "tangible" in this case but just the feeling on carbon rims is slightly different. They seem to hold speed easier. They feel like they just want to go (as he said in the video). The sound that they make when rolling or cornering. And if peer pressure is your thing, nowadays in a big group it seems like 80% are on those wheels. I was shocked when I joined a group ride of multiple thousand people lately and they were everywhere. Is it worth the money?! Well, that's on you! I've got a set of 3 wheels (1 front, 2 back) used for less than €400. I don't ever want to go back. I love them!

Well done. I concur with your results. Carbon superior to alloy for all the well known reasons but noisier and tricky in cross winds.

Deep dish are great until you ride in the Irish wind. Your test kinda suggest that those deep dish are slower.. 9 watts more for 0.5Mph..

A great video, very nicely done! You just helped me stop thinking of biting the bullet and buying carbon wheels - the gain is *at best* marginal, especially because you put more power down.

I have to concur, when I changed from Mavic Kysriums to my aero carbon wheels, I gained 1-2mph average speed overall with the same power output. I don’t have a huge ftp, so I’ll take any extra speed that comes my way 🤣🤣🤣. Btw…. You’ve stepped up your production quality!…. I like! Even though there’s no Gucci slippers on this one 🤣🤣🤣

Nice video. I do agree that the 7 more watts on the carbon wheels may explain the difference in speed. Now, what do you think of testing mid range deep section wheels (for those of us not ready to spend a huge % of the bike in wheels yet)

20.4 vs 19.9 and 185w vs 178w seems pretty darn close tbh I'd almost bet near half of the .5mph came from the extra 7w avg

GC out in the element!!!!!!! Why I gotta copy my shoes though??? I’m ready to buy those pedals! Do I need to consider anything else for them like crank length or anything? Or is it just buy it and plug and play? (Replace my keos and that’s it???)

0.75-1kph on everyday power levels around 30kph is around my take on this too. the interesting fact is how much faster it feels subjectively suddenly beeing able to go 1kph faster on your everyday power levels versus the actuall quite marginal percentage gain. its hard to get across people who havent experienced it. if its worth the money is another thing.
