Is this a guide or did I just trick you into watching my Akademiya dissertation? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This was a passion project of mine that I was working on for several weeks before I quit Genshin earlier in 2023, which I've just got back around to wrapping up. There are already a lot of excellent guides on the topic of Artifact Farming, so this video might not bring anything groundbreaking to the table, but I'm still hoping there are some interesting things you can take away from the approach I've taken in tackling this topic.

I think one thing to consider while looking at artifacts tho is, that you don't only build one character, but multiple ones, which means that "leftover" artifacts can still be an dps increase for your other characters.

That's what i do, I select a few more characters that I put into consideration when I'm pulling my main character, i manged to strongbox a few artifacts for sucrose and sayu while also farming for hutao, and even ended up with some nice elemental dmg bonus off pieces (usually electro which I don't need atm but I can't just throw a double crit goblet like that)

It's the reason domains like vermillion/echoes is less desirable to farm since only two characters really want to farm that domain. Compare that to Gilded/Deepwood and the number of characters that want or can be built with those artifacts makes that domain stronger.

Because the video is inherently useless, there is not one point you couldn't have figured out by yourself after playing around with artifacts or just using logic. Even the numbers shown for resin farming recommendation make no sense to recommend as the only purpose is statistical.

Even though I can kinda agree that some key takeaways are just logic, this video is just worth watching for anyone not familiar with Genshin or gacha games in general. Like you said, if you play enough, you can figure out a lot by yourself (e.g. focusing on main stats is the most important). But this video is there to prevent a lot of new people (and old players who don't think too much about efficiency) to waste resin and 5-star artifacts. It gives them a rough goal for artifact farming.

He gave a lot of info on why that is and showed the math on a lot of it to make it easier to understand, idk if you actually watched the video. Your "advice" is just a guideline for how to make your primogems efficient in terms of strength, which everyone gets told already and is useless at this point. That has nothing to directly do with resin, like what he was talking about. Also what you said about strongboxxing is bullsht lol, it's much more efficient to use on DPS oriented artifacts than on support oriented artifacts, as substats are much better on strongbox artifacts than domain ones, and those substats are more important on DPS artifacts

@@BooskeyRt I think another thing people fail to realize is that for new players, the only teams you can build are based off of the banners available when you started so a lot of these 5*'s could take a year to collect - so if you want to beat spiral with what you have available, then you will be building characters that might not be so primo efficient. Plus, there are things like playing on controller or mobile (internet speed) that make the "best" 5*s not necessarily feel as great to one player as they do for another and it can take time to try out characters until you find ones you like. I loved the info in this video because knowing which characters have the best artifact farming efficiency in the first few weeks gives me more confidence to farm for characters I've been putting off because I assume it will be as time consuming as the ones that have taken months. Veterans might know this already but seeing the math and charts is really helpful I started a new account to try characters I don't have the primos for on my main and I started using strongbox straight away and got some great artifacts that saved resin for building Xiangling & Raiden so strongbox can be vital for new players - even when I only had 6 artifacts to feed lol I still got a coupe better ones than I had. I wish I did this on my 1year old main account sooner!

And abyss is just smallest part of this game. Some characters who are strong in arena battles, are not comfortable to play in openworld. So play the characters you enjoy would be the best advice for Genshin.

another advantage to strongboxing is that it lets you skip domains with only one good set (VV/maidens) and instead farm a more resin efficient domain like golden troupe or gilded, effectively farming 3 sets at the same time. I'd love to see how this pans out in the simulation

I ran simulations for this exact issue. The results vary a lot because we don't have the data to know if a given artifact is "good" or even the % for 4-liners (Strongboxing for example has a higher % for 4-liners than domains but we don't know by how much) But I've come to these conclusions: Given 2 domains with one domain containing the artifact set we want but having a bad set as the second option and a domain where both artifact sets are desireable. If we strongbox every "bad" piece resulting from farming these domains into the artifact set from the "inefficient" domain the numbers are as follows: 1) Farming the efficient domain and strongboxing will result in 25.5 - 33.4% more total "good" artifacts 2) Farming the "inefficient" domain and strongboxing will result in 1.53x - 2.2x faster time aquiring the artifact set that we actually want

Interesting findings! Combined with Jyo's takeaways, I think the best practice is therefore to farm the inefficient domain for 2 weeks to get 70-80% of the power budget from main stats, then strongbox the rest while farming a more efficient domain since you'd only care about good artifacts at that point anyway

@@see_yl honestly the only reason i wanted my chars to have very good stats is for abyss 12th floor. I'm AR 56 now and only managed to full star till 11-3. Tried doing the 12-1 this time and died. The ennemies are just too strong, aka have enormous amounts of HP. And i hate the fungis bcuz to get the good drops, i can't atk with either Elec or pyro, wich are the best chars i have so have to go with bloom reac. But do those dendro cores only explode when the time is up, or if i were to trigger a react and create sum more it forces them explode ? Bcuz i don't do much dmg like that and rn i have Nahida with EM, Dendro dmg and crit and do 5k pure Dendro DMG so was wondering if i could do more dmg with full em...

Playing since 2020 and the only way I can easily +20 an artifact is if I feed it one of my +20 double crit artifacts that rolled twice into some useless stat and pray the new artifact is at least as good or better than the one I sacrificed.

I think the only way to fix your issue is to continue farming artifacts, but never use any low level artifacts, you should do this for about a week straight and you should be golden for quite awhile.

I like everything he mentioned on the video except that. While it is effecient to only use 5*s for strongbox, avoiding foddering them for exp, you do get burnt out if you do the artifact route for exp as your main source of exp. I did it a couple times before and its a fast track to quitting, only do it when you feel you want to do it, and even if you do it, you'll have a lot more artifacts that you want to level than you have the exp to gacha them all. Bad advice imo.

A thousand is the absolute minimum of repeats one needs to do to be able to draw any reasonable conclusion once RNG is involved. That's just how analysis of random events works, you need huge data sets, otherwise your conclusions are worth shit. What would let you make conclusions about how absolutely broken the RNG involved is, is a comparison of the minimum stat gain in that dataset, the maximum, as well as how much the simulations tended to deviate from the mean. But not the amount of simulations done... The amount of simulations only lets you draw conclusions about how accurate his conclusion is.

The fact that artifacts greatly effect how strong your characters are I find it shocking that there is absolutely 0 guarantees you will ever get something to improve your character. We have no say on set, on piece, on main stat, or on substats. We only have a say on which ones we decide to level. I love videos like these, where it greatly helps out newer players by telling them optimal uses of stuff so that they can avoid making newbie mistakes (and uses solid math to back up the claims so that it's difficult for even the skeptics to not believe it), but also offers useful statistics for veteran players such as myself. I often see many new players say that they do certain things (that are really un-optimal, such as using their 5* artifacts as fodder while converting their 1-3* artifacts into mora [NOT a hypothetical example]), and when I tell them how inefficient that is, they just choose to not take my advice and just do what they believe. Videos like these offer more data/proof for such people to actually perhaps change their mind.

Great video! I loved the in-depth explanations along with multiple example progression curves. Also, I'm always down for some CV trashing. The idea that CV is a remotely accurate metric for character strength needs to die. I do wish the video covered domain resin efficiency. Particularly how the X.0 domains, which generally features two useful sets and multiple characters that use each of them, are nearly always a better use of resin than the X.3 and x.6 domains. Emblem, MH, and GT are particularly resin-efficient because you can find characters that want basically every stat combination on them. Additionally, RV difference between a BiS 4pc and 2pc/2pc also factors into domain efficiency. Often times, the most resin-efficient choice for characters like Wanderer is to spend 5-10 weeks in DPC domain like you suggest, then wait until its strongbox is available. However, from the perspective of improving a single character with a signature set, I understand why you omitted domain efficiency from the video.

Wow... I must say this was quite eye opening for me. I'm an 1.0 AR60 player with almost a full roaster of the entire cast of characters (and quite a big load of weapons too). Building characters, especially artifact farming, is something that I actually always enjoyed doing, hence I have many dedicated builds for my characters. Ofc it's still an exhausting and even frustrating process, but it's the part I'm always the most proud of once I 'finish' building a character. But... I always have this habit of doing the artifact farming first, because I prefer having the worst parts done before getting to the guaranteed stuff. That habit actually made my first ever 5 Star (Diluc) being benched for more than 3 years, cuz I rarely got anything usable from CWoF domain (btw, recently managed to actually build him finally). After hearing all this, I might actually reconsider my order of character enhancement😅.

I’ve played Star Rail since release, started ZZZ on release, and now I’ve finally been getting into Genshin. This video is excellent because I believe it’s applicable to all the games. The numbers and stat rolls change slightly but the ideas should be generally the same. Thanks for making it!

this is an attractive display of some of the important statistics but it really really needs to be said that you should never be farming artifacts for only a single character at a time, which this video for some reason doesn't mention. even if its one of those domains where one set is literally garbage, the rolls a piece of it could have can easily end up being so good that they blow any set out of the water, not to mention that EVERY character has one free artifact slot that doesn't need to be on-set, AND rainbow (no set at all) setups can often be bis. also hot tip, look at exile and instructor 4 star pieces when you kill bosses, those sets are bis on some setups with characters like zhongli and gorou.

Thank you for the EM Kuki graph. You wouldn't believe the amount of dumdums on the internet that claim hyperbloom is harder to farm for due to rarer EM mainstat drop rates. Inherently one should already understand that rolling for substats is the true rate limiting factor rather than mainstat, so it's nice to have a visual representation of that fact to point to.

I love how this video is hard proof of the 80/20 rule. It was 8 months between the release of 4.0 and 4.6, with both patches releasing new artifact sets. 20% of this time is 6.4 weeks of solid farming. Assuming you do all weekly domains (30*3+60*7)=510, you are left with 750 resin each week. Spending 750 resin on exclusively artifacts for 6.4 weeks= 4,800 total resin. 4800 total resin divided by the resin you generate each week, 1260, gets you 3.8 weeks. Notice how (edit: in the first graph) we hit 80% power roughly right before 4 weeks of solid grinding? Boom! 80% artifact power with 20% farming time.

Nice vid just helping the people like my cousin: TLDW: It takes about 10 weeks of Farming to get about 90% of the way there for most characters. Less picky characters will be about 7.5 weeks and using strongbox helps…obviously. Characters that only care about 1 stat will take about 4 to 5 weeks. Key thing to note. Level up the stuff that’s guaranteed. I.E. Boss Mats, Talent Books and Weapon Mats! Good Luck.

I've always dreaded and avoiding truly farming artifacts because it feels so random and I figured I could theoretically spend months and not make any true improvements. 10 weeks is still a lot of time, but now I know that there *is* a sort of "stopping point" where it's reasonable for me to move on. I feel the ~10 weeks approach so reliable right now with my Navia 😂 I passed the 4.3 update building her, and then the previous update (4.4) trying to get a better CR circlet, and ended the 6 weeks with NOTHING NEW related to 4.3, lol. But, as I was just trying to improve my build, and I'm a veteran with my favourite chars and weapons at MAX levels and most of the talents at 8~9, I'm good to burn my resin with artifacts for now until the next new char or weapon I'll possibly get. That's the type of thing that can really hit you in the RNG... when you have existing artifacts that are good, and you're farming for that new set. You routinely get stuck at a point where you need circlet/sands with a specific main stat and a X DMG cup.Either one will do the trick, because you can then off-set the other. But now you're in a situation where you need the right main stat with the right substats and they have to get rolled into. And until that happens, you aren't getting a 1-2% increase per week. You're sitting at 0%, until finally you get the one piece that makes swapping worthwhile.

Navia has been rough for me too, although I've mainly been farming MH/GT - I haven't farmed her domain exclusively. So she's on rainbow to get the best stats but sadly missing the buffs from her full set (she still beats spiral though - probably cuz Furina is carrying her lol). It's good to know when the stopping point is and this video has given me so much more confidence to plan out artifact farming for my backseat teams I'm building (Cyno/Wanderer)

But the priority of what to build in what order should still be consistent with the order of what gives you the highest returns per Resin spent.

Really good work here, thank you. It's a known fact that artifact farming is no. 1 source of frustration for people who want to push their characters to the limit, and I think they do realize that extra 30 CV they will get across 5 artifacts is generally speaking isn't worth it if takes whooping half a year to get. But people who play for a long time also have nothing else to do, not everyone is into leveling up every single charcter they own just for the sake of it, so they are still chasing for that 3-5% extra damage cause the only other option at that point would be not farming anything at all, which seems like a waste of a valuable resource. But thing is... At some point I stopped farming artifacts for an entire patch, and it made me feel better about the game. It is very important to be able to say to yourself "it's good enough" about some 27CV feather with some %ATK or EM and just move on, it helps alot in avoiding burnout.

As a new player to Genshin, your resin efficiency video is exactly what every player needs to learn to prevent broken accounts. I had an overall dps strategy, but you clearly identified the boundaries when it becomes inefficient farming. Spending around 25% of your time, 5 weeks, to get 80% dps of the max artifact set output is a normal ratio in MMOs. The real gacha mechanics is obtaining the last 20% dps of the max artifact set, which requires 75% of your time farming. That is the real kill joy as a casual player.

The thing like Husks domain that have a different bias (less likely to get DEF sands than any other domains for example) is sucks. Hoyo knows what we want, and lower the odds on what we want out of that domain

@ColinsComments It IS fake. Every main and sub-stat relies on rng, which isn’t tied to a domain. Which means, that you can be getting def artifacts in husk domain, but hp in another domain. Which isn’t tied to any domain passives or so, but pure rng luck.

I can kinda confirm this from an anecdote. I got Itto and I remember getting his artifacts up and running super quickly. Probably within 1 or 2 weeks. Relatively happy with that turn around, I left his domain and never returned. Only recently that I finally got round to toying with the akasha rankings and Itto is my lowest ranked at about 70% the strength of the top builds in terms of raw damage. (Top 62% on the leaderboard) My pretty well lines up with your simulation if we consider luck and a decent off set piece that comes independently of set farming.

Id say youre the best Genshin Guide maker. Not only do you mostly focus on Spiral abyss, which is arguably the only challenging content, but you did so with really good explanation on how enemy Ai behaves as well as good positioning which helps all players unlike the other CC who just focuses on teams. Veteran players dont need to be told which team works for a chamber but positioning certainly helps, because, lets face it, when you have too many units already, sometimes your play can be pretty unoptimized. Its the same with this video, while veterans already uses the artifact strongbox and are aware of efficient resin use, there are still minor things you managed to impart us, such as that added chance of 4 substats on strongbox artifact. I dont think ibe heard CC's talk about that. Lastly, your clear and easy to understand explanations free from annoying and unnecessary effects coupled with a calm voice makes following the topic easier. I hope more people see your content especially the newer players.

One factor that isn't often discussed is how valuable that last little bit of improvement can be. Meaning a 5% improvement may be the difference between having the dps to one cycle something, thus making it a comfortable clear, vs not quite getting there, fumbling for a while and maybe just barely making your abyss time, or falling short. I was pretty well invested for a while, but man did getting a single 5 star signature weapon really put me over the top. All of a sudden I'm able to 36 star every abyss. So that's the thing with long term investing in arts and such, it may be slow, but the difference can be night ad day to invest just that little bit more to tip the scales in your favor.

This is really interesting. I disagree about artifact exp though. The amount of artifact exp required to get full level 20 artifacts across all characters of a full roster is immense and I'd love to see some analysis of that. I appreciate not everyone builds every character with a unique artifact set but as someone working on that I can confirm that the amount of exp required makes for a year or more of full resin investment into just artifact exp.

The analogy with the casino and artifact farming is actually quite the opposite, since the longer you farm artifacts the more likely it is for you to improve on your set (until you reach maximum). But for the casino, the more you play in a casino the higher the certainty is that you lose money over all.

Love the visualizations! Would you be interested in comparing the resin efficiency of building a character with a 4pc set as opposed to a 2pc/2pc set with good substats? In this video, you claimed that the front-loaded gains came from getting the right main stats and completing the 4pc set effect. But this runs counter to the logic of other theorycrafters, who prioritize good substat quality over completing the set. For example, with Wanderer, you’d be comparing the resin efficiency of completing a 4pc Desert Pavilion set vs a 2pc VV + 2pc Atk% set. If this interests you, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!

I wish I hadthis video 2 years ago, this helps so much as someone who plays genshin since 1.4 I had taken two nearly year long breaks from Genshin just before sumeru and fountain and just now came back. Sure I'm AR 57 have like 10-12 top tier characters and around 25 built characters, 5 five star weapons etc. but it was always resin optimization that threw me away from the game, I love the story, the characters, the world building and the amazing open world to explore but always all this magic goes away when you are stuck with 160 resin daily, and some more fragile resin for farming, I wanna farm for an hour or two not for 3 minutes and not get any updates today, I wish genshin would get the same treatment as HSR a little more daily limit and more condensed stockpile limit. :C
