The wire gauge of the cable is important. 18 and 16 AWG are not worth considering. 14 or 12 AWG stranded twisted pair is best with spade lugs on the cables. And yes, copper of course.

Great advice. I think also at the entry level, diy is a viable option. Lamp cord doesn't cut it. But there are lot's of diy recipes that can build decent cables for just a few dollars. Braiding twisted pair copper cables removed from ethernet cable can be good. Braid 3, then take three of those and braid them etc until you have 24 strands. Connect all the white for - and all the colored for + and you have a great cable for under $50. You'll invest a few hours and hands may get sore but the results will be very good.

I contacted AQ customer service to find out their speaker cable specs, capacitance, impedance, etc.. They responded that they don’t have specs. I purchased Linn K20 cable which met the Naim requirements. So, that makes me wonder that maybe some cables do sound better with certain amps because of compatible specs. From my digging only a couple of European companies publish specs. Maybe manufactures of amps should determine what works best and save everyone sometime.

A well made cable is all you need. DIY with good cable. Kimber 8tc is good. 14 gauge and lower. Recently I observed my 12 gauge with transparent sheeting appeared dirty. Sourced from RS Components in the UK. Reputable supplier of electronic goods. Cleaned it but no change. I cut the sheeting to observe that the copper strands turned green. They oxidized along the entire 3 m length. That was a shocker. Poor quality of sheeting, degraded over time and reacting with copper. So, my view is quality of materials and construction.

@@geddylee501 There is this German language audio channel and they had the following thought process. If the ideal speaker cable has zero loss and the speaker is considered a black box, you could take a cheap speaker cable hard wired to the speaker and define that as part of the speaker. By adding an expensive speaker cable, the sound should not change. But then you may as well connect the cable that belongs to the box directly to the amp, and save your self the money of the expensive cable. So the answer is to define the cheap cable as part of the speaker and thus eliminate the need for expensive cables. A speaker IS an electric motor and is driven by an electric current. If you use copper cable 2.5mm or above for a Hi-Fi system in your home, that is ALL you need. It doesn't have to be OFC or silver. The claims that cable has to be OFC or made out of pure silver etc. is pure nonsense. These claims ARE snake oil, and there are videos on You Tube proving this.
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 2 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day copper wire is copper wire. Unless you are dumping an excessive amount of power down your cables due to very high power output you don't need anything too extravagant for speaker/loudspeaker wire. All copper wire produced is low oxygen and at least 99.95% pure copper regardless if it is used for power delivery or signal delivery. Most people listen to their systems at around 50 watts RMS and under and for that you could easily get by with 18AWG. For most receivers under 250 watts RMS per channel, you can get by with 16 AWG for the lengths needed for a typical home setup. If you need longer lengths or higher power step you can go up to 14 or even 12 AWG. I had a buddy running 600 watts RMS per channel on his loudspeakers and we couldn't tell any difference between 12 or even 10 AWG at very loud and very high base levels so the cable was more than sufficient to deliver the power at 25 feet per channel. You could use regular solid construction house wire but it isn't as flexible or nice to work with so the best bet is to use stranded speaker wire with higher strand counts being ideal when you need greater flexibility. The fact of the matter is, you could literally use coathanger wire, clothesline cable or fencing wire made of steel to connect your speakers and it would still work and sound just fine. It just would not be easy to work with and could oxidize more quickly. You don't need any of the fancy audiophile snakeoil for your speaker cables. Any analog interconnects between equipment, especially at low signal levels should be either shielded, balanced or both to help reduce unwanted noise from entering the preamplification stage (garbage in = garbage out) of your amplifier. You don't need gold plating or anything fancy as long at the cable carries the signal cleanly without picking up unwanted outside interference. Again, copper is copper here so the construction of the cable and it's signal ratings are what matters most to limit outside interference. Nickle and gold plating are used to prevent oxidization from forming causing the connection to go higher resistance over time.
@SpyderTracks
@SpyderTracks 2 жыл бұрын
So you’re saying copper wire is the best at a scientific perspective? So best conductance, least resistance, what gauge reduces resistance to zero? So no other material like silver or titanium has better conductance like science tells us? Then of course, you’re saying there’s no need for shielding? So electromagnetic interference doesn’t exist again as science tells us? And all this is aside from the benefits that one can actually hear, I’m guessing you’ve got a pretty basic system if you can’t determine simple capacitance sound alterations? So then none of this would be relevant to you anyway?
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpyderTracks I am going to assume you didn't even read my entire comment becasue some of the statements you make are glossing over points that I made. Copper is the second most conductive metal second only to Silver. So scientificly silver would be a better conductor but conductivity isn't the only thing to consider. When you buy wire it is a tradeoff of many things but at the frequencies and power levels we are talking about, having better conductivivty than silver isn't going to gain you anything when loudspeaker wire is after the output of all amplification stages. Sure with silver you will get about 7% more conductivity than with the same size gauge of wire but we are talking about the difference of say 20AWG silver vs 18 AWG copper. For the huge cost difference of silver 20AWG wire vs 18AWG copper or even 12 AWG copper for that matter, you are far better off going to the next size gauge of wire and using copper as the resistance and the losses within the wire will be equivalent and since copper is far cheaper you cen achieve lower resistance for the same price. Silver is more ductile than copper but you can get very fine stranded copper that will meet virtually all needs for flexiblity. At speaker level signals you would need to literally place a coil of the cable over an unshielded transformer to hear any interfearence in a loudspeaker at the typical wire lengths we are talking about for a home stereo system. Any interfearence from RF is also not going to have enough power to be audible on speaker cable. Regarding analog component interconnect cables and not speaker/loudspeaker cables, especially those before any amplificaiton stage it is important for the cables to be constructed correctly to properly handle balanced line level signals and even unbalanced line level signals. For these cables and smaller power levels you have to use shielding or twisting or both as I discussed in my first comment but this is all down to cable construction and is only really relavent for low power, low level signal cables used in interconnecting components. The majority of high quality professional audio equipment is going to deal with balanced signals so having twisted pair interconect cables, usually with XLR or MiniXLR ends and as long as the cable is constructed properly, all interfearence is going to be canceled out by the amplifier input filter stage. So as long as the cables are built/constructed correctly from decent quality wire rated for the signals they are expected to carry they will perform better than the equipment that they are interconnecting. Making sure you buy a decent set of loudspeakers and quality amplifer will make virtually all of the difference where wire (esppecially speaker wire) just has to carry the current.

It seems no audiophile people welcome such tests, and I wonder why?! ... In this case, if you decide to go ahead and do such a test with a control person not known to you, please compare any choice of speaker cables with for example simple power cord lead cables. I am sure you or anyone else can't get 100% correct answers to such a test. I'm just saying.

As part of the research we investigated so called speaker cables..... ALL a waste if money. They did the job but were all matched or exceeded by a high wire count figure of 8 cable. Nob we didn't just listen we used sig gens, spread spectrum generators and spectrum analysers. No nonsense and unable to argue with the results.....but people get seduced by 10% if the system rules etc.....set by ...oh yes...the people wanting to sell you vastly profitable cable. System tested was to reflect 300w RMS per channel.

Many people say hifi cables are overpriced, but we always have to do distinctions. For sure, many brands do make expensive cables not worth at all, they sell you bad materials, no r&d products with poor performance. Other brands are expensive but give you substantial things. In my little opinion, the same and even worse apply for hifi electronics, but no one dare to call a scam a 10.000$ amplifier even if it sounds horribly. Maybe because first perception when you buy such a machine is of having bought something substantial without question (it's big, it's heavy, looks good, etc.). Finally, I agree with what Paul says here.

@Douglas Blake I respectfully think yours is an oversimplified vision, underestimating the capability of human hearing. World is a complex thing and can't be explained in such a reductive way. There are people given the perfect pitch and people who cannot distinguish a major chord from a minor. At the same time, I can't explain continuous questioning against people who appreciate fine differences in sound, these including those given by different cables.

There are many audio enthusiasts who believe this simple phrase... "When I change my speaker cables, my HiFi system's sound changes." I happen to be one of those enthusiasts. Determining how much to spend on cables has everything to do with individual experiences, reliance on audio measurements, your love of Audioholic Gene, and a multitude of other factors including which HiFi cults you identify with. My recommendation for the cable curious is to audition different speaker cables on their own system and determine the best value for yourself. Buy some cables from a retailer that will let you buy them and then return the cables if you are not satisfied. Most real stereo dealers will be happy to help with this if you are upfront about what you are doing.

As you become a better listener you are more in tuned to small changes in sound which makes it easier to evaluate sonic changes in your system. Also the better the system the bigger differences you can hear. If you can’t hear differences then you either don’t have the listening skills to know what to listen for, or your system is not revealing enough to show you those differences.

The manufacturing of an excellent OFC speaker cable can be done for well under US$ 1 per feet. Then if you add connectors, you will need to spend perhaps another US$ 1 per connector. So total BOM cost for a 5 feet stereo pair of cables would be less than US$14 plus labor cost of assembling it in some Chinese factory adding another US$1 to it. Now add another US$5 in profit and the cable will cost US$20 FOB China. Then add another US$5 for logistical cost and US$974 for “audiophile branding” (profit) and you got yourself a US$999 speaker cable that comes with a pile of snake oil pseudo science sales talk. I agree with Paul except the specific brands and you can find even better deals.
