Welcome to the first official episode of Miro's Hoya summer camp - how much water hoya reallu needs? It is one of my favorite topics, only second to potting mixes. We all know I am addicted to perlite. I hope this will serve well as an introduction to watering, and encourage you to find out what your plants need in your environment vs simply relying on the advice on Internet ❤️

I've learned it's never a one sized fits all. Clay and sphagnum tend to dry out faster as opposed to ceramic and bark or leca or soil. Between what medium you use and what kind of pot - plus environment and everything else - sometimes ya gotta learn by experimenting and listening to your plant! 😊

Loving this beginners’ series! I’ve been developing my green thumb for a six months or so with gardening & unfussy houseplants in an attempt to grieve/ cope with difficult life circumstances by reconnecting with nature. I’ve recently fallen deep down the hoya rabbit hole. 🌱😍 And for the first time I have to cut myself off from buying plants. Lol. Starting off with Krimson queen & princess, compacta, coronaria, linearis, lacunosa, bella, and nummularioides… The depth of info on this channel is wonderful, and cannot get enough of the charming self-deprecating humor! Miro, thank you for being so welcoming to beginners! ❤ Regarding self-watering pots, it seems there are many types. Do you have thoughts on how to evaluate which type(s) might work best for particular Hoyas and/or how to DIY our own self-watering pot set-ups?
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
I have tried to DIY them before and while it is not difficult, what was the biggest challenge for me is finding proper inner pots and cover pots that would have a deep enough reservoir. Depending where you live, some hydroponic stores may offer inner pots for whatever outer pot you want :) I prefer to buy them now, as I found a brand that is quite affordable, so that is really my only criteria :D

Love the summer camp for beginners! Fabulous idea. Long time follower, first time commenter. I’ve been collecting Hoya for about 5 years now. Personally I feel the material of the pot dictates the frequency of watering too. Most of mine are in terracotta as I am terrified of overwatering and they dry out so much faster than plastic or glazed ceramic. Definitely a challenge during summer or those that are on heat mats in winter. I am in NZ so in the midst off winter atm with zero degree nights and no central heating.

When I first started a lot of people would say to wait until the leaves are wrinkled/foldable and that's really not great for a lot of hoyas! I recommend clear pots and checking every few days/week to see if there's still moisture and watering after. A lot of my hoyas would be a ton better if I had watered more often when I first started.

Hi Miro! I'm not a beginner, but also not an expert! I LOVE your videos! You are personally responsible for at least half my wishlist 😊 I'm self-watering pot curious, but firmly a soil-based gal (except with cuttings--I usually use water, stratum, or moss for that). Do you use self-watering pots with any organic medium? I'm also a chronic underwaterer [i think i got freaked out early about DON'T OVERWATER and went too far in the other direction 😅]. I dabbled in pon and leca, but I just don't want to mess with the chemicals/nutrients/whatever and such (does. not. spark. joy.). I'm afraid of just leaving them in self-watering with soil. I imagine a tragic mud situation in the bottom of the pot and it's scared me off up to now. But you're really selling the SWP situation. Also, do you Ph balance your water? (I don't because there are just so many, and, well, my adhd is chaos-style & it sounds like that takes the kind of foresight I was tragically born lacking!)
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
Yes, I use self-watering pots with coco peat and perlite (about 50-50 mix) with great results :) I would not put undulata in this however. I am also now trying a mix with 1/4 coco peat, 1/4 perlite, 1/4 bark, 1/4 coco chips :) Well, tap water is usually around 8 and if you have a barky mix, you may not need to pH down as the bark will bring the pH down. However, the regular rain water they get in nature is below 7 :) So, yes, I pH down in all cases, but I don't really measure it that rigidly, I basically know how many drops to add now :)

I would love to water like this because I take too long to water my plants. Any tips on more time efficient watering?
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
There is water at the bottom of those pots, but there is also a barrier - they have like an inner ledge. so the pot sits on that and water goes below it. These can be hacked to be self-watering too, but the reservoir is very small. Usually there are some roots that go in that reservoir and then they will quickly soak that water up, in less than 30 minutes. :) It has not caused issues for me, as it is not a problem unless they sit in the water for days.

That is Hoya liddleana now :) I am not great with this type of hoya. I restarted mine, it was growing, but the leaves were small. Check your plant for mites. These likes warmth, bigger pots, and to be left alone - they will wrap themselves around the trellis on their own. They like high light, but not too much and I think self-watering pot in pon is a great choice. It sounds to me like it could be a mite issue?

@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 ай бұрын
These two species while currently appear as valid on POWO are under review and it is expected that both will change; even for the botanists it is hard to distinguish what would make wayetii separate from kentiana and then further to inconspicua... There will a review of Phillipine Acanthostemmas (group under these fall into). But to be clear - difference in the size and shape of the leaves does not a species make, nor do slight variations in the flower - for example, there are many lacunosas with smaller and larger flowers, but they are all lacunosa. Same for verticillata. It is necessary to take into account the wide geographical range where these plants grow and then see if something can be just a natural variation of a species or does it deserve to be a separate species.

I am a beginner hoya mom. I actually feel very intimidated to even comment among all you pros. I only went back to being a plant parent after retiring two years ago. I had to move and down-size. My plant family has been cut back to only 33 plants. Only 14 are VERY basic (easy-going) Hoyas__mostly different carnosas [easy on the budget & easy on my disabilities]. They all seem very happy and continue to grow year-around (but no blooms yet). All are in my east facing-window, and I have grow lights for the darker months. *** Here's my question...I've been told by several people that after watering my Hoyas, to spray them directly with orchid foliar fertilizer. I only tried this a couple times this past month. No bad side-effects that I can see. They seem to still be thriving, but have you or any of your subscribers heard of doing this?
