How about you budget $200/ mo. toward your clothing fund and anything you don't spend in one month carries over to the next? So you would set aside $200 every month in your budget or in cash even if you don't buy anything. I have a carryover clothing fund in my monthly budget. I think it would help you feel less deprived and less likely to exceed your budget overall.

I think this would work better, you're right - thanks for the suggestion. Will try and work this in to my rules for next year :)

You might want to check out Jennifer L Scott at the Daily Connoisseur. She’s a proponent of the 10 item wardrobe (with a few extras) and switches it out seasonally. I’ve been following the “rules” for 2 almost 3 seasons now and it has really curved my spending. I make a Pinterest board for the season, find the common themes and pieces, and focus only on those. I’ve also unfollowed most fashion influencers and brand pages on social media and that helps also.

Love Jennifer's concept, too. I prefer it to other capsule wardrobe systems. I also do the seasonal budget and shopping. In my opinion, it makes more sense to plan and buy for the season ahead instead of, for example, buy a jumper in February, when winter is almost over and also because it changes shopping from a pastime activity (to do the whole year) to a specific period of time. When I've done my shopping for the upcoming season I don't go to the city/mall and don't browse anymore which saves me a lot of temptation, obsessing, craving, stress / anxiety, guilt and of course money.

@@melligolightly it also allows you to be excited for the season you’re in and not feel like you have to completely deprive yourself. I think she also talked recently about not necessarily donating things if you didn’t happen to wear them that season. It’s okay to keep things in storage for a couple of years to switch out based upon the aesthetic that you’re wanting to achieve.

Love ur idea abt the season budget. It may take less time since u only make the purchase at the beginning of the season and then no need to worry for the rest of the next 3 months. 👍

It’s really nice watching someone else do a similar challenge ❤️ but also still be human. I was doing well and suddenly got four things in august. How do you deal w lower cost basics ? I buy a lot of affordable t shirts and tanks (I live in Florida so it really doesn’t get cold here).

thank you! I haven't really bought any as I don't tend to wear many basics, I have a couple of t-shirts already that have done me okay. I can see it being challenging in hotter weather though. I will say, loungewear and activewear aren't included in my low buy so I have bought the odd tee to wear around the house that I don't count.

Well done for noticing you’re buying too much to begin with 😊 I’d say add anything you come across that you want to buy to a list and review the list towards the end of the month. You’ll probably find you no longer want most of it and if there is some things you still want you can choose one thing from the list to treat yourself to! That way you have something to look forward to during the month.

Sounds like you are following your 200/month rule, just average per month rather than literally per month. One thing that happens after a great purchase is this weird urge to repeat that high even if there’s no need for another item. A seasonal budget sounds reasonable, but if browsing in hope of future purchases is a pleasant pastime for you, 3-6 months of no buys might be hard to stick to.
