Ethan, I'd also spend a few bucks and have then install isolation valves so that you can isolate each tank from the common manifold. That way, if one tank malfunctions you can just shut the isolation valve, pull out the problem tank and then use the good tank.

Ethan, if this happens again, wrap a wet rag around the shut off valve and turn the valve off and remove the hose from the tank and remove the tank from the camper. The wet rag will keep the gas from igniting. I would check into replacing the 2 old tanks to new tanks. The hose connection may need to be replaced to fit the new tanks. Love your videos. Stay safe.

Ethan, it's likely venting head pressure from an over filled tank or the valve may be worn, It can be scary but don't panic, stay calm, vent the camper, remove the tank, put it some distance away and let it vent, glad your okay, stay safe.

A less expensive option would be a Spot Messenger satellite panic button, or similar device. It can send pre-programmed emergency messages or short texts along with your precise location, and their international rescue coordination center will contact the appropriate agency for help. Messages can also be sent to family and friends, and it can be programmed to drop digital "breadcrumbs" on an internet-accessible map (a good reason to keep it in a pocket, not your glove box!)

11/29/24. 1. Brass valves and fittings are used on propane because brass doesn't create sparks when you are working with tools to connect fittings and copper together. 2. If you are creating a lot of static, get a static strap to wear while you are changing or getting tanks filled. 3. Propane tanks have a be tested every 10 years so yours may be at the end of their life. 4. Find the tiny hole in the wall between the gas tank compartment and the cabinet and plug it or them with some kind of putty and, put a propane detector in the gas tank compartment. If it were my camper, I would bore some holes in the gas tank compartment so any leaking propane can escape through the floor or through the door.

Hi Ethan. Since propane is heavier than air you can expel it from the camper just by opening the back door. Don't open the door to the truck b/c it is not at the lowest level. I would also get your alarm checked. It should have gone off long before you are light headed. The type of leak you showed I have never seen. You were indeed fortunate.

First, this Thanksgiving day I am thankful you are okay! You are so resourceful, I may have removed the tank to get it out of the camper, but that could have been dangerous too. I think anyone from a gas company would advise what you did, get out and stay out until the problem is fixed, in your case the gas tank emptied and the gas dissipated. Good job.

EVERY person that owns a camper experiences that very same issue with propane... If it's not a line leak it's a valve leak. Replace any old tanks don't mess with old or rusty tanks. And check your lines with a soap and water mix spray bottle fir any babbling ( leaks) . I have all my tanks mounted outside my rig just for that reason you just experienced. Now you know what it is..! Don't be afraid of it.. You KNOW what to do and hoe to do it. Be confident..and you will be safe. I'm proud of you for not loosing your cool and doing something stupid. Camper life tip get a Hott Rod water heater. Converts your water heater to electric, but you need 110v connection. Installs through the drain and keeps water hot. My old water heater took a crap and I couldn’t find parts and had to boil water for a shower. Best purchase I have made, now no waiting for hot water when I am connected to the grid. The heater can be used with the propane, so you do not lose that option.

I'm happy you didn't get blown up. I've heard of people's houses getting blown up due to a propane tank explosion. Personally, I think I'd be completely paranoid about living in the camper with a propane tank following this. When the tanks, lines, and connectors are in good condition, they must be safe, otherwise no one would be using propane. I wish you the best, and have a Happy Thanksgiving today.

This is common & happens. Buy new tank(s), its cheaper than repairing & recertifying old tanks. That's an over pressure relief valve. The tank has warmed up & it's over pressure now. Propane is heavier than air so leave the cabinet & the camper door open to outside & excess propane will dissipate out & there won't be any danger. Remove the tank from the cabinet & let it gas off. Once the propane has aired out of the camper, switch your hose to the new tank that's bleeding out gas & use it for a while to relieve the excess pressure off it. Enjoy the learning experience. 😊

I loved your camper and truck tour. I used to travel with my Husky, Zhivago a lot and he loved to ride in the camper but other times he just wanted to sit up front with me. I found a product, I think at Walmart; it's a blow up doughnut that fits between the back of the truck and the front of the camper so the dog can have free run or just hang his head over inside the cab to watch the road ahead. I didn't have to do anything with the windows because the camper and the truck both had sliding windows. I even used it to crawl from the cab to the camper without going outside.

Ethan, you reacted well considering how little you know about Propane - like most people. When your propane sensor goes off, it's well below the lower explosive limit, so no real danger. Letting it vent off was the right thing to do. Once the doors were opened, the propane density was very low, just smelly. The butane cook stove was a good purchase. In addition to propane emergencies (like running out), it's great for cooking stinky stuff like fish without fouling the living space. A good sleeping bag, foam pad and small tent would also be useful and wouldn't take up much space.

In Australia we have a nationwide gas (propane) system called Swap'n Go. You just turn up at one of their outlets with your empty gas bottle and grab a full one & pay for that one. You only pay for the gas, but you get a new(ish) gas cylinder (bottle) every time you swap it over.. It's great as your old empty gas bottle is tested upon return and the date stamp checked for compliance - if it doesn't qualify then that bottle is removed from the program. This way you always get a new(ish) gas cylinder that has a quality seal and you know its not faulty.

I think you handled that situation very well. At least you were aware of the static discharges. When entering the camper, I would have grounded myself to the camper metal outside and if possible, would have reached inside for any metal that was grounded to the camper metal such as window frames before letting go of the door metal. As long as you are continuously grounded to the camper, you shouldn't generate any sparks. You could also grab an extension cord and strip each end of one of the conductors inside it and ground one end to the camper metal and wrap the other end around your wrist to prevent sparks. Safe travels Ethan!

Also, you need to have an emergency locator beacon for sure you may have one and I can understand if you didn’t want to use it in this case but if you don’t have one, that’s something you have to have. If you get injured or you get sick out there and there’s no cell service and no Internet you’ve gotta have a way to call for help. The one I use is made by the brand called ACR. I like it because there’s no monthly fee. It works anywhere in the world. The battery last five years and it’s got a full five months of power which means I can get a signal out of the canyon or under a snow covered canopy.also it works off three different satellite systems. There’s another device called the Garmin in reach that people like but it has a monthly fee.

I'm glad you're safe and thank you for sharing. Being aloine and frightened is not easy to share. The only extra thing I would have done (which you may have done but didn't show). was to open the windows to let the breeze blow though the camper to ease any gas buildup. You mentioned that the gas bottles and fittings are old - would it not be cheaper and safer in the long run to replace them rather than repair them? At least you now have another cooking option which you can use indoors or outdoors. We have one of those for blackouts and they are very efficient. Good wishes.

There are some places that will exchange the tank. Most places like Homedepot and Lowe's will. But your tank is an odd shape and probably old connectors. When you stop for refills or stop at campgrounds start asking if they know where you can get a new tank or update the tanks. Might be as simple as adding and adaptor for a new tank.

When you have the opportunity, look into relocating the tanks to an external location like the roof and replace all the lines since they like the tanks age. I am not a big fan of anything combustion as the convinces come with risk like you experienced or worse the byproducts of incomplete combustion that are odorless and just as toxic and dangerous

Also have to be cautious with some older camper refrigerators have electric and a gas operated that uses a pilot flame. The light switch on the truck door can also cause a spark. Yeah they wont fix older tanks or any tank that has significant rust on it. Camper life was always a fun adventure, kinda miss it. Thanks for all your vids, your time and efforts. Glad you are safe. Your tanks appear to be 5 gallon and are super common- Walmart or Costco, around 50 bucks. You should be able to replace your tanks easily. Best of luck and stay safe.

Glad you're safe and I think you did the right thing. Very scary situation! I also agree with the other commentators that you need a sat phone or even Star Link internet so you at least have some capacity to get help if needed.

You absolutely did the right thing, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Shame you'll be without your propane for so long, but you're a problem solver and looks like you figured it out. Stay safe

I'm not a professional, but have some experience working on LPG systems. The chance of the propane/air mix getting close enough to stoich to catch fire in that good a ventilated area are very small. The biggest chance should be at the leak from the bottle, and propane bottles should be designed to burn a leak in a safe way without exploding. What concerns me more is the propane leaking inside the living area, and not venting outside trough a vent, leading to possible suffocation. Does the compartment for the propane bottles have a vent to the outside? And are that compartment properly sealed from the living area? And talking about making propane explode, I seem to remember Mythbusters struggled to make it😁

Ethan you don’t often detail where you are, like you did when you were in Korea or Thailand. An earlier video had you in Colorado, then a freeway exit near Sedona, AZ. The peccaries habitat is also southern AZ. Your cave travel in UT seemed fun. For those of us being travelers, would enjoy the towns you are in along the way. There is a whole town of wild burros in Oatman, AZ. Thanks for sharing your travels.
Merry Christmas! I locked myself out and lost my keys…
