What I love about Illmatic it's that it really feels like a poetic anthology of Nas' brain. Everything he went through in his life builts the bomb that was this album, even with every song having different vibes and styles, Nas keeps everything consistent by basically being himself as much as he can be with the best possible execution.

Great job with this. I was too young for Illmatic in 1994 and it wasn't the first Nas album I heard by the time I got to listen to it but it hit me like no other album in hip hop ever did. Funny because I ignored and underestimated Nas for years. My best friend let me hear It Was Written in high school back in '97...and I was blown away by that album but I didn't think Nas could do any better. A few years later my cousin let me hear Illmatic and I was instantly a hardcore Nas fan. As a rapper myself I was extremely inspired by this album. A true masterpiece that'll live forever as the pinnacle of hip hop

I think NaS was never able to truly top illmatic (at most tie) due to the circumstances with it. That NaS had to prove himself, he was "destined to live the dream for all the peeps who never made it". Most rappers just do it decently, but he made one of the greatest pieces of music ever. He truly had Kings Disease

Ill video King benny Garcia 100, I like your video style. Old enough to remember Hip/Hop/Rap from its earliest stages and all things considered I do have Nas as the best to do it. However, his success on his first album (IMO the best Rap album all-time), with so many producers, led to an extremely confusing pattern of what Nas was trying to convey in his music, was he trying to kick knowledge? Or, later on, do the Biggie thing by diversifying his style so women could rock with it as with "If I ruled the world? Always felt he should've chosen one producer to make "Nas" music. IMO, Not until much later in his career did his lyrical style match almost precisely with his beats (Ex. 'No ideas original'). Born and raised in L.A., I always thought Nas was late or couldn't stay focused (drug use and all) and do albums, remember in the mid 90's just waiting for his freestyle/mixtape that wasn't even an album so I could hear something from Nas. Pre-internet, pre social media days. Remember clearly how shocked we were to hear the album "It was written" like what happened to Nas? Where dude go? Why is there singing on his album, definitely wasn't ready for that and I think this affected his status in the Rap game at the time because the drop-off from "Illmatic" to "It was written" was tremendous. People weren't prepared to hear that style from Nas, although, "It was written" is criminally underrated ahead of its time and a classic solid album, all things considered 27 years later! So, at 14:02, when Jay says Nas was was using his voice wrong, I was like bullseye, 100% accurate. By the time Nas dropped his album "I Am" I was SMH (it's was ok nothing really special, and the arrow wasn't pointing down) and to hear "Nastradamus" was just total trash, or as Jay says "Garbage" (short of the Primo track as Preem never drops anything trash). IMO, Nas fell off so bad that "P" (Prodigy) locked the Rap game for a second with H.N.I.C. which was a dope ass album 100! Just my opinion and the first time I've ever written a comment on KZbin.

Bro the first time I heard Illmatic i was honestly shocked on how incredible and dense his rhymes were, not only just rhyming but it had so much substance and meaning too. The crazy thing is how much it’s still relatable today even tho it was released in 94’ (the year I was born too lol). My only regret is not listening to it earlier in my life. To me, illmatic is a certified classic encapsulated in time. Literally not a single wasted line, word, bar, verse, lyric, song or anything. Also great video btw

Illmatic's lyricism is rly unique... I don't think I've seen any rapper rly duplicate it to the same effect.... thanks btw

I’m new to rap after listening to rock for 10 years but I wanted to see Wu and Nas when they came to Petco Park, they sold out though so I couldn’t go
