The Switch version does have another disadvantage- Nabbit and Toadette also add 100 seconds to the timer- so it defeats the purpose of Luigi U when you use them

Luigi U is a perfect example of how important level design is to a game. At a glance New Super Luigi Bros U is a bad game, but then you see the same mechanics, enemies, level themes and power ups used in level design that's actually inspired. Suddenly you realize that all NSMBU needed to be amazing was level design that didn't bore you to tears

something i dont see many people mention when they talk about this game is that nabbit actually makes multiplayer different and more fun, as long as you're only playing with 2 players. the reason is because nabbit's interactions with players are far different than how blue and yellow toad work. nabbit can completely pass through other players, he can't be picked up and because of his invincibility, nabbit is encouraged to take different paths through the level. because of this you wont be bumping into each other as much. nabbit being "easy mode" is only really if you choose to play as him in single player, if you're playing multiplayer with one other person though, its a blast just don't do it on the switch port, they made it so you can interact with nabbit like a normal character (picking up, not passing through players, etc.) yet another reason as to why the switch port is actively worse than the originals

I bought the Deluxe version not knowing how much worse it is (on sale though). It NEVER fails to anger me how stupid it is that yellow and blue toad aren't separate characters that can be played at the same time. I wouldn't mind the assymetrical multiplayer the original had being gone if I could just play the game for real with my brothers!!!

I disagree that Nabbit being added as an easy mode is a bad thing. Just because the game is easy for you, doesn't mean it's easy for everyone, and gaming should be enjoyable to everyone, not frustrating. By adding an easy mode, the game becomes more accessible, and there's nothing wrong with that. Though I will agree it is a bit annoying that the 4th player always needs to be playing an easy mode, that feels like a total oversight. I really enjoy this game though, this is one of the best 2D Mario games, the level design is amazing and it was really creative for a NSMB game.

Agreed. As cheap as NSLU is for recycling like 90% of the original game, it's fresh idea of spicing up level play makes it a bit better than NSMBU, if you ask me. Despite the fact you can call it a ROM hack and wouldn't be too far off the margin, I relish in the fact that it is much more difficult. I'd say NSLU contends with the likes of NSMBWii, and was overall a great time. It could've been much better as a standalone title for the year of Luigi, of course, but I'll take what I can get. Hmm, 9/10.

This was one of the only games I had growing up and i hugely preferred Luigi U over Mario U. I still don't know why, but I have over 200 hours on Luigi U because I practically 100%ed it everyday until I got 3D World and Galaxy 1 and 2. The physics are really fun and it has so much replay value from the shorter levels.

It is also more fun to speedrun. Some stages in New Super Mario Bros U take a long time to beat. Every level in NSLU can be beaten in about a minute excluding boss fights.

Luigi U is uust a nice break from the standard Mario 2D formula. The timer never felt unfair, as the levels were perfectly designed with it in mind, making it a fun fast paced experience. The difficulty was just right too, not terribly difficult but not a walk in the park eithrr (aside from some of the endgame levels which were damn hard).

For me, I actually first discovered Luigi in Super Mario Bros. DX, by pressing select on the map, you can play as him. Lost Level physics and all. I know, I'm old haha. Irrelevant comment aside, I've seen both of your NSMBU videos, and I gotta say. I agree. NSLU is the better of the two. I remember I got NSMBU for free when I got MK8 and I never got around to beating it. NSLU on the other hand, I beat the game using the Mini Mushroom in the last Bowser fight. It was a true David and Goliath moment. lol Wish I still had my physical copy though, they're way past the $30 price tag nowadays.

mario U isn’t particularly bad it’s just a rehash of a rehash of a rehash of a rehash, reusing the world themes for 4 games in a row is one thing but re using the level themes for those worlds isn’t. it’s just constant call backs to mario 3 and world, which was cute the first time in mario wii, but it’s genuinely tiring seeing it repeated again in the exact same way for another 2 games. i get that they make these games so that people have somthing to always buy and they don’t break their bank. but please just do anything else, no more desert world 2, no more sky land 7 no more scaling the mountain, no more wing beetle(at least put it in a different world), and for the love of god MAKE NEW MUSIC

Yea, I agree that playing as Nabbit feels like cheating. But it's not even a fun easy mode. You're barely playing the game if you can't get hit by enemies. At least the White Tanooki Suit only gets available after dieing a lot of times in the same level. But the Funky Kong Mode from Tropical Freeze is one of the best easy modes I've seen so far: Extra health and a double jump.

@@matthewberry2144 yeah, i don't hate Mario, I just love Luigi a lot, probably because I grew up as player 2, so I played as Luigi and instantly gravitated to him, I also think he has a lot more personality thanks to the Luigi's mansion series (tbh it's Nintendo's fault that Mario doesn't have any personality) and yeah, Luigi does have negatives like a poorer traction and scared a lot (though i like this since it gives him personality but sometimes they way too far with his fear factor) do, that is why I like him.

@@howlingpig Yeah, to be fair, I grew up with Player 1. I love Luigi too, but Mario just always had a special place in my heart. To be honest, I think the fear Luigi has helps factor in flaws, which helps shape a character. I think that's why it feels like Mario has less personality. He's been given a personality and has been expressive in many other titles other than "Wahoo" and "Wah-hah", but they don't give him too much of a flaw that he has to conquer. I do think he desperately needs that. The reason I prefer Mario is just because I found him caring and charming. Many times he shows great love for his brother and many other times he's given many expressive moments. They're harder to find than Luigi's, since with Luigi's you can easily find them in a set of a few games, but trust me, Mario's are there in plenty instances. I understand why many more people gravitate towards Luigi, though. I have an unpopular opinion. I love Luigi and Mario, but Mario has always been my favorite.

@@quintessence2183 its just a boring SMB1 clone with harder levels, at least the USA SMB2 is more unique, no one cares about Doki Doki Panic with these boring characters, SMB2 USA gives us ShyGuy, Birdo, the Peach moveset in Smash, Ninji, the sprixie princesses are based in the subcon fairies, the cherry item, Snifti, the turnips in Peach moveset, the captain Toad gameplay used turnips as well, sparky etc, SMB2 USA gives us a lot of iconic elements in Mario games more than that clone of SMB1 .
