the stunted growth comes from the fact that he could have been a superstar talent if not for his poor attitude, and I'm 45 so I remember back then. Nick was my guy but everywhere he went starting from college he always had problems with the coach or players or anything everyone knew that back then kind of like Ricky Davis but Nick's career was better in just using Davis as an example cause he could have been really good but had a shit attitude with the coach and players at some point you gotta look in the mirror, it can't be everybody that's wrong.

Van Exel was less willing to be a pass first pg and that’s where your biggest argument comes in. But to me you can coach that out of a player if you get him early enough. So we are going to ignore the fact he's a terrible floor general? One, he tends to not set up plays for other players as he would over-dribbled and kept the ball to himself too long. Also, the fact he's not a great perimeter defender pretty much hurt his career as teams tends to take him late in the game for bigger body to disrupt guys like Steve Smith, Jason Kidd, Rod Strickland, Gary Payton, John Stockton, and Kevin Johnson. All are much bigger PG and can take him off the dribble when teams can set up screen against him. He can outdribble and get to the basketball with easy lay up with the right match up, but it would mean he kept the ball on his hands too long again. Which is also tend to be an easy when you need spacing and guys who can get wide open looks. Nick VE tends to overlook that as a point guard, which is the main reason on why he's not highly regarded in that era among the guys I mentioned that played against him in the western conference.

He could do everything but shoot consistently. There were games he'd got hot but he had too many shooting slumps. Shooting 35-38 percent from 3-pt range was good for the 90s though. But his two-point shooting was often in the low 40s. That was before the majority of the league focused on shooting threes and this was before the NBA protected perimeter shooters like it does today.
