I write a lot of fanfiction and stories ever since high school. And I am forever grateful to the small following I have for these stories. But I won't deny I've had in the past gotten comments where people specifically want me to write said fan into story or a specific story that entitles to their likes. I've definitely learned to politely decline and block people if necessary, but I won't deny when I get these comments, there's a sense of worry of 'What if this happens again?' Thankfully, most fans understand and go about there day. Sometimes simple communication/an explanation can really help a fan understand why a creator may not want to do what the fan wants. I'm not saying it'll always convince a fan or always work. But it doesn't hurt to try and level with them in a polite manner 🤗👍

I want to add something because I know I am guilty of this myself- if you are acquaintances with someone 'famous' or popular, it does not mean you're friends. My dad taught me this lesson and it's still something I have to keep teaching myself this. Unfortunately it's a reason why I do fear making friends too because I worry I'll be like that of pushing too hard. It's also happened where people want to be my friend right off the bat despite few interactions and yeah it's very uncomfortable. Good video Bliss, hopefully this will help others.

Think of it this way. Thousands of people come together to give support to this one content creator. With so many of them, they can do so with relative ease. This one creator and her several collaborators are doing everything in their power to deliver for these thousands of fans, juggling many projects and trying to squeeze them into their day-to-day lives. That's a far cry from simply liking, sharing, commenting, subscribing, or financing through Patreon or commissions. Asking them for extra attention or special treatment is admitting that you don't sincerely appreciate or understand them as a person and what do to make content for their fans and get by. No one likes to hear that the time and effort they put in isn't enough for some people.

With this lesson I hope everyone can learn to respect their idols! Even I’m learning to do so myself and not stray so far from it, heh. Sure there are times where we get to chat with our favorite content creators, but it’s better to just give em personal space, as Bliss explained in the video. And who knows, maybe one day one of our idols may want to chat with us more and eventually become friends. But you always gotta remember their personal boundaries and respect them as individuals! :)

Sadly, there are a goodly few who just don't know the meaning of "no". And furthermore, there are times when I almost lose sight of why I draw in the first place. When I draw fan art of your OCs, it's supposed to be out of appreciation for your work. I don't do it for a glimpse in my direction from the individual I base it on. Or at least I try not to.

Somebody tried to rope me into doing a movie-length edit for them once. I didn't quite understand the situation at first but after I figured out what was going on I had to politely shut them down and then block them. I feel bad that I disappointed them but at the same time, I make literally no money from editing despite it taking hours of my time. I have a life. I can't just edit all day, and I wouldn't want to anyway. I'd get burnt out. I'm not mad at the person. As you said, parasocial relationships happen and it can be all too easy to lose sight of the reality of the situation. And I learned an important lesson about paying attention to what I'm agreeing to and setting clear boundaries. I spent a lot of my life bending over backwards for others and it's been hard to break that habit. I often worry that I'm being too self-obsessed. So this video is very validating.

You know when I saw the list of cameos that would appear, I thought we were going to get a whole group of bronies in this and I was half right; we saw Dr. Wolf, Aeon, Chuggles, Solar, and Silver Quill, and they all performed wonderfully. I see some were the voices of the shadow ponies which was cool too. They were almost like Windigos too. And the part with Silver Quill was great, I didn't get why he did what he did at first but then I remember that was also his daily self. I do hope each character is doing well. As for the video itself, thanks for this knowledge. I recently got into a fandom or two and well honestly I never know what I do is something that could lead to entitlement. Just seeing your examples makes me cringe and feel so much guilt and pity. But I try to be better by thinking before typing and just showing support the best way I can. I do hope many more will acknowledge this.

Good gods, I got itchy and nervous just from that intro. Glad to hear you raising awareness of this topic. Edit: Just finished the video, and jeeze, I certainly hope you don't have to deal with people like this too often. I thought it was bad when someone literally stole one of my fanfics and tried to claim it as their own, without changing anything or erasing my name from it, but this is like if you had an Annie Wilkes every few minutes. More power to you guys. Also, I know Dr. Wolf isn't a real therapist, but neither is Dr. Phil, so there's hope for a backup career.

Pardon the pun but good to hear from the horse's mouth. It hasn't happened so much to me personally (Lucky Knight) but sometimes get requests to join servers by people I've never met let alone had a conversation with. To borrow from the digital marketing cycle - don't ask someone to marry you before buying them a coffee first. Based on "normal" approaches to friendship - don't unload your everything on someone you want to get to know or simply respect their boundaries. Knowing this, some peeps don't respect them irl or otherwise. Other side of the coin is it fills me with great joy when someone says they've been following the work over the years and enjoying it (silent fans). Great video and proud to be a patron /)

I have not watched videos like this in forever but I guess I will leave my take and personal opinion on this. Meeting your idols can be great, but as you get to know them it starts to feel disappointing and usually leads to issues. Some fans feel "entitlement" because most and usually some people these days outside of social media don't have friends, close family members, good social skills, and more. most feel a need to look up and try to communicate with someone they could learn from and get advice from In desperate times. we wish we could have the same close friends that are supportive and almost always available there with you like you have. the fun, the creativity, the warm feeling of safety and love, even the feeling your reaching success in life. I met one of my idols not too long ago and we became friends and due to my own personal problems, 2020 being terrible, political differences and different beliefs and finding their own flaws. Long story short, it went very badly. All it taught me is that idols are not worth meeting if they already have what most want so im not worth much of anything. I dont really look up to anyone anymore and it makes me sad not wanting to take the time to make friends as much as I use to due to these past issues in groups/communties. I feel disconnected from the world and even in online communities I think I shouldn't have much trouble fitting in with yet I do. I would say more, but all I can say is, It is what it is. Don't meet your Idols.
@lightning-bliss3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that happend to you, but I think that mindset for others may be a bit harsh. It doesn't always have end like that, it certainly didn't for me anyways. Everyone has different experiences, some might meet their idols, and that's it, a quick hello and that's it. Some meet up and become friends, and those friendships can last forever or a few years, friendships do change over time. Sometimes for the better, others for not. It doesn't always have to be a bad experience, and it doesn't always have to end badly. I think with you, you had a dissapointing experience, and it left you with a very negative impact that is preventing you from trying to meet new people again. But I assure you, it may not always end that way, and you shouldn't let one experience ruin your chances to meet people and make friends one day. However this is your choice, you decide what is best for yourself and what makes you happy. This is just an opinion I'm sharing, and you can take it with a grain of salt. Either way I do wish you the best in life. Have a lovely day :)

To expand on the "Tantrums" section, there are those fans that go even further to the point where they believe that the best way to let lose their anger is by sending death threats to someone due to a portion of their content that they don't like. Now, feeling angry at something that is a part of human nature, but we have the ability to understand how to express that said anger. There are multiple ways that one can express anger without hurting someone else nor themselves in the process, and it is important for us to learn how to control ourselves. Overall, this was a great video, Bliss, and there was definitely solid advice here, I hope you are doing ok.
@firepaw40853 жыл бұрын
I have often seen people doing this either by overly tagging people they want to talk with, being hyper critical of details that dont involve the fan and just over all making everything uncomfortable for not only creators but other fans caught in the situation. It's sad to see because while some fans just dont know better others do and leave a sour experience for creators when it comes to talking with other fans. I think everyone needs to take a step back from idolizing creators and remember where they are in the relationship so everything stays safe, happy and healthy for everyone. Cant wait for more of your content in the future and thank you for making those rainbows!🌈

I recognize that I do a couple of those things listed with others, I do try to remain curtious with others, but it's a little difficult seeing as I have autism and can't spot some subtle social cues. =/ an example of this can actually be found in a comment of a previous video where I thought it was ok to 'virtually' hug you Lightning, Trust me, Solar put me in my place fairly quickly and I respect him for that. ^^; So yeah, I'm sorry that, that made you feel uncomfortable in any way. i can really understand this. I have autisum and ADHD. subtle social cues are really hard to notice. this usually ends in me talking someones ear off. a way that i have created to combat this is i Just start off by telling them to be blunt about stuff because the subtle cues will just slip by.

Love the video Lighting Bliss, this is a great lesson to learn and remember everyone at the end of the day our idols are people. Like us, they have life's family, friends, work and so much more by respecting this you gain there respect by treating them like human beings that they are. That's all they ask. Please. Always respect there boundaries that they give you, remember they don't hate you never take it personally everyone like idols they need personal space there entitled to that. It breaks my heart to hear my idols go through with not so great fans that gives them crap everyday, come on guys act your age or just leave them be if your going to act like an entitled 5 year old brat who doesn't get there way. You would be surprised the amount of commissioners who divulge REALLY personal things to me. I've had a commissioner message me randomly because I liked a random cute art tweet and tell me the person who made it is a bad person and I shouldn't interact with them. A few of these interactions have led to me just refunding them and bocking. Others I have become the master of the grin and bear it. Wanna tell me about the secret life of your OC, go for it. I'd rather that than telling me all about why you're depressed. Like you don't know me. You're lucky I'm trustworthy and won't ever spread what you say. Some people aren't that way and you shouldn't just divulge that stuff to strangers. The love proposals or saying the things they want to do or find attractive about my OC make me hella uncomfortable. I'm married as well and even saying that doesn't deter people sometimes. In the end, the good always outweighs the bad, but the bad can be annoying thorns in the memory.

Very informative Bliss, we all need to understand how parasocial relationships work so everyone can be content with whatever outcome happens. I make fan art all the time and if the person acknowledges it great, if not, oh well that’s life. Sadly, there have been many cases in which over obsessed fans have even broken the law such as stalking or even killing their idols mainly stemming from their own personal issues. Life Noggin went over this with Jaiden Animations about why we obsess over celebrities or any kind of well known person. My advice to those who are fans who feel insecure with where they are now is to work hard on yourselves so you can offer something special to the world as well

Create a topic to take up definitely in the online world we live in today, I see a lot of people in my own community that do think that I owe them help, but have done nothing for getting it. I rarely say directly no to help them, but if I have time, help guide them to find the solution themselves, but even then, there are the days where I really don't feel for help and try to let them down easily. I properly also say yes way too often, where I take too much to myself, and sadly feel like I will let them down if I fail.

I have the opposite problem; once a wallflower, always a wallflower. Heck, it took better then 20 minutes for me to get up the courage to walk over and say 'hello' to you and Silver Quill back at B.C. '18 and almost an hour to say 'hi' to Prof. Wolf at B.C. '19 because I was so intimidated. But I'm glad I did and was very grateful for the autographs I received from you and many other members from the Rift Café. As a rule, I try to make sure to take up as little time possible from Con guests as they are usually pretty busy and have a lot to take care of while there.

this video really speaks to someone like me who is both a fan of as well as a fanfiction writers almost all the ones i see have people in the comments clamering when the next chapter is and stuff, in laymans term "IF YOU KEEP DEMANDING AND BUGGING US ABOUT IT YOU GET NOTHING YOU LOSE GOOD DAY SIR!"

Wow. I’m sorry you’ve had so many difficult encounters. I’ve seen many instances of the examples you described towards so many creators, especially on Twitter. I think this video explained pretty well why certain behaviour is a problem and how it would feel on the receiving end. It was also nice to see your friends supporting you too.

This makes a lot of sense. There a lot of artist I idolize but pestering them won’t work. I’m really glad someone pointed this out. Mad respect on this. I made a lot of new friends mainly cuz of my own slow steps to restore my mental health but also with my partner’s help too. It’s really great someone pointed all these facts out.

Hey there! Thanks for making this video! Even though I'm a semi-content creator myself, I often struggle with "clinginess" and demanding-ness with the people I talk to. (I really dont try to, but it happens) This kind of problem actually got be blocked by a friend of mine, so I have to change fast.

I think deep down it's these kind of situations that make me not upload as often as I do..but I'm glad to have watched this and, like many people, am going through to see if I find anything that is edging on entitlement. I do love the spoopy pony ghost-things you drew for the "fans". Also, I hope you and your family have an awesome weekend and that you keep on being strong against entitled fans.

I will certainly try to use silverquill's suggestion next time I go to meet a guest at a convention I am attending. Aeon has one of those villain laughs and personalities in a video that I never get tired of seeing.

You probably don’t know/fully remember who I am and I’m not gonna reveal my old handle that I used to interact with you; but I was one of those entitled fans, and my lack of internet etiquette as a child is one of the few things I look back on now as an almost adult and am actively embarrassed about. I apologize for my poor behavior as a fan and I’ve since realized my mistakes and have moved forward. I’ve also made an effort to try and make others aware of proper etiquette when interacting with online creators and will continue to do so, especially if I myself end up being a somewhat larger creator. I really hope you’re able to see this and I just wanted to throw this out because this has been on my mind for a long time now, not just with you but with a few other creators as well. I don’t expect you to necessarily accept my apology, it just gives me peace of mind to admit this and put it out there.

This hits me as a artist That ive had to completely drop those who ask to much of me especially when i make art piece and they put there suggestion of what should happen especially in fanfics as well or even video projects that im not interested in This was Great thanks Blissy 💖 3 things 1. Aeon is a wee bit to happy to dual that multi weapon entitled fan 😂 2. It was so noble of silver protecting you from the blast and then evil laugh that moves to more evil laughing yep heart warming moment is gone 😝 3. I like that the design for the entiled fans they look like ghost Time to get the gear on ( Ghostbuster theme plays) 😅

I enjoyed meeting you, Silver Quill and Dr. Wolf in Dallas. I tried to make sure I didn't take up too much time and wasn't overbearing. I bought some merch from SQ as well. Hope to see some or all of you wonderful KZbinrs again at Harmony Con. It's always nice to see you guys in the vendor hall or at panels. I had no idea how much you guys had to go through all the time until this video though. At one point I had thought maybe it would be cool to have "horse fame" in some way but I'm kind of glad that wasn't in the cards for me because of how much you have to put up with.

This was very informative, thank you Bliss and your friends for doing this. I've met you and a few other commentators/reviewers through IRL conventions and online ones, and I hope that I have been respectful and thoughtful to each and every one of you. I have a guilty conscience because of my morals and faith, so I am VERY self-aware when I do something that's either out of bounds, crosses the line, etc. and I would hope that anyone who felt that way toward me would let me know in advance so I could immediately fix it. But now that I create content myself with my ponified parodies, this will also help me from that perspective as well. Kudos on a job well done and keep up the great work >:-)

Sometimes, i come back to this video, and I'm thankful that I watched. Before even seeing this video, i almost fell in the "Popular person is cool with me, so that means I'm also cool" mindset. I thought i was so cool because of all the stuff i use to do either by myself or with popular people i know. I would've kept going down the downward spiral had it not been for my irl 2 close friends opening my eyes and making me realize how much of a donkey i was too everyone i knew. I've since then, been more thankful about my 2 friends.

this also happens to us animators Bliss. I have one that keeps asking me when a specific animation is going to be uploaded. I even had one tell that I was I employed by them and that they'd make sure I never got any business again, mostly because I didn't like the type of animation they wanted me to make. So I was forced to block them on Steam. Stuff like that causes me to burn out.

Y'know, while I understand the kinds of fans that come off as... well, 'that' kind of fan, it kinda does make me smile knowing that a vast majority of them aren't as bad as they seem. And no, it's not the rainbows. XD Jokes aside, this was well made and yet you still manage to smile even after I got to see you at Bronycon 2019. The same one who does whatever she can, whenever she can. Btw, nice touch of Sub-Zero being in the vid.

I've seen one commenter on DeviantArt who complimented someone's work, but then later commented that the artist wasn't thanking them for the compliment and called them "rude" for it. The thing is, this artist is really popular, and gets hundreds of comments for every piece they put out, so the first thing that popped into my mind was "What? Is this guy suppose to take time out of their day just to thank *every single person* who comments on their work?" Like, sure, it's nice when an artist does thank you for your kind compliment, but really they don't have to, especially if they can't keep up with them all! Heck, even if they only get one or two compliments on their work, they shouldn't have to be expected to say "thank you"! That should be up to them!

This was a very interesting, and informative way of broaching this particular subject, I enjoyed it very much. I've also experienced a few of these circumstances myself, though not on a fan/idol level, it's a stressful thing to deal with that is for certain.

I've definitely been guilty of doing some of these things, but not to same extreme as the example in this video. A few years back I would send anon asks to a person I thought was cool on tumblr, most of them consisted of me desperately seeking validation for something I was going through. Validation that I really needed, but it wasn't their job to give to me. Once they started posting about how people should stop venting in their asks and stating this boundary did I realize that I was doing something that wasn't cool, and I hope to never make anyone feel that way ever again.

Yep, I agree with you, no fan has a right or even “self entitled destiny” with a celebrity. I’m not sure if I’m a fan or celebrity, but… when you get as close as I was with certain fandoms like the “Sonic Franchise”, rubbing up next to fans that think they are more self entitled than you or other really is a pain!… all I could do was distance myself from it more & more! But is it not wrong when a bad self entitled fan becomes an official writer/celebrity, & you can’t help but notice the signs & their trolling, even if they won’t say it aloud??? Do you know any infamous celebrities, etc. ??? 😭 Anyways, a big thanks for the vid!👍 (no self entitlement asked, I hope, in respect)
