How Note Blocks Almost RUINED Redstone Forever

In update 22w13a, Mojang changed the way note blocks are muted. What they maybe didn't consider though are the unwanted consequences a change like that would have for the entirety of the Minecraft playerbase...

The sad part is that Mojang undoubtedly changed note blocks to be like this to make testing the Allay easier. Then they probably made the arbitrary decision to make it a permanent change out of their inexperience with redstone, not realising the can of worms they'd just opened.

If they really want to add this, it would be good to at least have a silent note block version crafted using wool which wouldn't require anything on top.

I like the idea of a silent note. It could even be the default for placed notebooks to make no sound and then they must be tuned to make sound. That should hopefully help a few niche situations where a player doesn't understand they can change the tune of the notebook intentionally. Maybe shift-clicking could toggle the silent and sound mode with a change on the texture when a block is muted. That could help noteblock song testing as well.

at first i also didn't see why ppl were complaining. but ye it really sucks. especially for you who uses noteblocks both as an updater, and to actually make sounds in your gambling games

They really need to revert this, this basically "destroys" a ton of preexisting builds and heavily limits the usability of noteblocks if you care about your redstone build being silent. And as you said, this isn't something that affects only hardcore redstoners, all the regular players who have some redstone contraption in their base or world which they got online will now have to endure all the annoying noteblock sounds. I can only imagine how annoying a simple dropper elevator will be.

they should just add another block that has the same properties. U can use hopers instead of the note block's in the most case, but sometimes u need a solid block with these properties. And don't forget, it will break 60 % of professional redstone tutorials on KZbin/Social Media.

Hoppers are too laggy for large scale redstone. They also don't provide block updates and are not sticky. Lamps are in fact closer but create duplicate pulses.

One other way this could fix, add a tool into Minecraft that allows you to 'mute' note blocks. Note blocks are incredibly useful for making compact redstone, I hope they change this.

at first I thought this was a good change, then seeing this video changed my mind... I personally bealive that it should be changed so that any redstone related blocks will stop the note block from making sound like wool, but all other blocks should allow it to still make noise

A simple fix would be a add a new "note" to the noteblocks that plays a silent note (or just turns the noteblock off)

Maybe a sound slider for noteblocks would be useful? Like those sound sliders found on settings, so you can mute or lower the sound specifically of the note blocks

Thanks for bringing attention to this! I heard about this change and wondered how it would affect the Redstone contraptions, glad to hear they still function the same but there should at least be a way to mute the note block still if this change is going to stay.

Yea, as soon as I heard the change, I was like, "Oh that's kinda interesting, and makes sense..." but I immediately got annoyed with the fact it would make a disgusting noise machine out of so many current and future contraptions. I agree, this change definitely needs to be heavily modified, or revoked. I saw a suggestion with shift-clicking to mute a noteblock and that sounds so far the best solution to me.

I never thought about it like this, when I play Minecraft, I normally play without sound so I don't find it a problem but I guess it's an interesting change.

In someways it would be cool to have your contraptions make a sound to feel more mechanical, but them playing music goes a little too far XD

Well if im mojang back then coding this change, I'd probably add a new block with the same mechanic but with no sound at all, which would make more sense anyways. It feels like mojang is sometimes careless of its player base and other times too afraid of upsetting its player base to actually make changes that'd make sense :|

minecraft needs a "wrench" tool. i would solve a lot of things. rotating pistons, observers.... muting noteblocks...changing hopper orientations or rail orientations... also i could be used to add some other states to other items, and maybe even be enchanted

Could you use a Target Block for the same or similar purpose in those contraptions? It transfers power in all directions, which could help in some cases, but may also break things in others. Just looking for work-around options if they do decide to implement this change.

I don't think so because Target blocks don't give an output when powered like noteblocks do

If they keep this, then I am definitely going to assign every farm and contraption that I build a specific note or chord. It's so satisfying for me to know which farm just activated, and this could really help scratch that itch for me. Also, a possible fix would be too make noteblocks directional in the sense that you can choose which side the sound comes from and then just put a block of wool on that side.
