You forgot to mention that if the opponent accidentally passes the ball to you when you are in an offside position, it's not offside as the pass came from the opponent. You also forgot to mention that you cannot be offside when you are in your own half. You also forgot to mention that you are not offside if you are behind the ball when it's played to you

Holy mother. Are you getting paid by the minute to make this video? Offside - 1. you are in defender's side of the field and one defender between you and the ball or 2. you are in the defenders side of the field and you have placed yourself in an advantageous position. No offside - 1. throw in, goal kick or corner kick and you receive the ball in the defenders side of the field and it goes right to you. 2. you are in defenders side of the field and there is only one defender in front of you, other than defending goalie between you and the goal. or 3. you are in defender's side of the field and the ball is between you and the goal, regardless of how many other defenders there are. Done.

Elements now include: * Where the attacker was in relation to the 2nd-to-last defender when the ball was last played by a teammate (basic) * Did a defender make a play on the ball (vs. a deflection), which would negate any previous offside positioning (recent) * Mentioning the goalie shows you may not understand that all defending players are equal with respect to judging if an attacker was behind the 2nd-to-last defender * "one defender between you and the ball" is completely incorrect, it is the 2nd-to-last defender's position with respect to the attacker and the defender's goal that matters, not the defender's position w.r.t. the ball * "Offside - you are in the defenders side of the field and you have placed yourself in an advantageous position." - Also completely incorrect, being in an advantageous position in itself is not grounds for being offside. The video does a MUCH better job explaining, and does so in a concise manner. It could have been a 20-minute video explaining many of the intricacies of the offside decision, but chose very well what could be conveyed in 2 minutes. What you seem to be missing is that the decision always rests on multiple elements: Position at the time the ball was last played by a teammate, plus some combination of what transpired: Did the player in an offside position interfere with the ball, or a defender? Did that player receive the ball from a deflection, rebound of the goalposts, crossbar, or goalkeeper?

Can you elaborate on the moment at which the decision is made? I.e. Upon receiving the ball, the pass being played etc. What parts of the body can be deemed to be offside? Also, can you define phase 1, 2 and 3 for me? You missed out that you can be offside without touching the ball if in line of sight of the goalkeeper. In reality, the rule gets more complex every year. A video made 12 months ago will be close to correct but will be missing some minor details.

It sounds confusing. When I watch a game it looks like everyone is running back and forth and they occasionally kick the ball. Now I need to try to understand being offside. If you kick the ball and a defender gets between it and me then it’s offside. It seems like that happens a lot. Thanks

maestro you can have the ball within 10 yards of the goal and you can still have a player that's offside. I get that it prevents cherry picking which is fine, but in most circumstances it's punishes attacking teams for being aggressive. And in a sport where scoring is hard enough as it is the rule doesn't make a lot of sense

You know how football would look like without offside? Teams would just be playing long balls to their striker, the midfield would be unnecessary and the defending team would be forced to park the bus. It doesn't punish teams for being aggressive, it punishes teams for not being able to beat offside traps.

Pretty sure you call our football, American football, so no you actually don't call our sport by our name. Also, the term soccer is British in origin, so blame them if you want to blame anyone. Either way, it's just a name... nothing to get all worked up about.
