I will explain these behaviors in videos soon. Until then, think about a large group of of atoms compressing one atom. It would become part of the group. I doubt that the nuclei remain outside of the electron shells. Another important point is that, just because there may be no "thing" between a nucleus and its electron shells, it doesn't mean that there is nothing there! How do you understand what the interior of an atom looks like? Stop picturing the protons and neutrons as little plastic balls.
