I think the “no” answer bring flirtatious was a legit thing, but that it may have been due to women not wanting to come off as eager in a society that was stricter for how a woman presents herself (especially to a man). For example, the lyrics in “Baby It’s Cold Outside” comes off as creepy today with our societal context, but when it came out, it was acute flirt, where she has all these “reasons” to leave, but she actually wants to stay, and now she can say later “well, I tried, but I had no choice, how horrible… (yay!)” But that kind of thing isn’t really as common today because society has changed. The reasons a woman might say no are different, and agreeing to a date quickly versus “being hard to get/won over” is more common now because women are more allowed to explore relationships instead of being selective or having to “protect her purity” That’s my theory anyway. But yeah, older people do need to get with the times- when women say no, it’s better to respect her boundary than assume she’s “playing hard to get”
@Dhorannis8 күн бұрын

There will never be any awkwardness about the fact you've been intimate with her sibling or that you shopped in her family tree because you wanted a similar looking gal. The cultural norms of my time were to always date a woman slightly younger than yourself and to marry them before their late 20's, so her older sister will have been a few years younger than you already and we will never discuss what that implies.

Maybe this stuff is why a lot of marriages seem to be so unhappy, with people only sticking together out of obligation, despite the mutual disdain?
@blizpix10 күн бұрын
Yeah, I think dating strangers is honestly kind of weird, and less likely to have good long-term compatibility. I always only dated within my friend group, or friends of friends, and that worked out well for long term relationships. I've had three long term relationships, including my marriage, which is now almost ten years old. I do think that, and cohabitating before marriage goes a long way towards preventing the unhappiness I see more commonly in older generations' marriages (speaking as a millennial).
@abcdefghij33710 күн бұрын
When you are dating, all the time spent together is about being together. When you are married, a lot of the time spent together is about dealing with life. Gotta fix the house, pay the bills, deal with money and health and relatives and kids. You have to live with annoying habits, either figuring out how to fix them or live with them and not get annoyed. You spend so much more time together, yet it gets harder to make time for just being together.

I mean, color was also a requirement in the years before interracial marriage was legal. And also they had to be the opposite gender of you and if you were a different religion that might cause some issues with your parents. Nowadays even though marriage between different races and same genders is more socially acceptable, there isn’t the same societal forces preventing you from dating, there are still new issues like an unstable economy and there is a greater division between genders.
