I question the math on it. If it saves you a 3rd if a second on each Pokémon that comes out, but you have to waste time getting into red I would think the multiple times you had to waste time getting back wouldn't be worth it.

Absolutely psyched red bar made it in. I think it ends up being one of the coolest aspects of the vanilla Red speedrun, having the ability to play right on the edge of risk and reward and eek out just a little bit of extra time with some risk. I don't think there is going to be a Pokemon that can carry red bar for as long as Mega Mewtwo Y will be able to, but I think there's potentially a lot of smart usage of it I'm excited to be able to see. This rocked. Thanks for the videos as always, they're consistently a blast. Also since I haven't said it yet, congrats on the baby!

Appreciate it! It’s a very weird way to play the game but it does complicate some other mons. It’s already difficult to plan a good route as is but a Pokémon like Zapdos could probably swing it for a decent stretch but knowing how far would be hard under the ‘you only get 3 runs’ format. It was fun though. Maybe regular Mewtwo can red bar it all too.

Red bar is also annoying on the ears so hopefully you play with different audio because speedup. Also this was a great run to see including the sprite. This may be the pinnacle of red and psychic type slash is busted in the best possible way. But alas my boy Alolan Ninetales has been deposed as the king of backports

Yea, it would have been more comfortable if Blastoise didn't crit at the end of Rival 6. It was pretty comfy in practice but I rode it out and got some decent footage for my troubles. Thank god for gen 1 AI lol.

I've been inspired by TerminalMontage's Paradox Pokemon Battle Royale: How well would Miraidon fare? It probably won't have Electro Drift until the league, but it does start with Dragon Breath to breeze through Brock, a rarity for Electric-types, and it can still get Thunderbolt after Surge, which is close enough in power to Electro Drift to see it through most of the game. Surely this, alongside its greater stats, should let it stand up to Alolan Raichu at least? Its special isn't quite as high as Goodra (only base 135), but it makes up for it with its whopping base 135 Speed giving it a high crit rate, and naturally learning Agility at 35 lets it accrue badge boosts, while Goodra has nothing of the sort. The other three finalists of TerminalMontage's video don't really fare very well. Flutter Mane is haunted by the fact that Ghost is a physical typing in Gens 1-3 (meaning it doesn't get a usable STAB until 35 with Dazzling Gleam; it _does_ get a STAB move earlier, but that STAB move is Astonish, which A: is physical in gen 1, running off of Flutter's cruddy base 55 Attack, and B: is extremely low base power), Scream Tail doesn't get a STAB move period until level 42 with Play Rough, and Iron Bundle has to not only deal with starting with only Present, but also its strongest STAB being Powder Snow until level 42 where it learns Freeze-Dry (or Celadon City for the Ice Beam TM), though I guess Whirlpool (which Bundle gets at 14) would be kinda broken with Gen 1 Trapping Mechanics coming off of Bundle's insane speed?

ATM, I'm trying to finalize my Emerald workflow to get those videos to start releasing and then I want to circle back to some really old cross gen runs to see but I wouldn't rule them out. I think it would be pretty decent for sure. Those are solid ideas. If the Iron Thorns video or Tinkaton took off more, I would have probably kept going but there are like 1,000 Pokemon so its always hard to narrow down what to do.

Mega Mewtwo Y: faster, smarter, stronger 😁 I'm a big fan of Megas, so I'm glad to see more Mega runs no matter what. Personally I kinda wanna see Mega Garchomp. In-game, its lower Speed from regular Garchomp severely holds it back, but I imagine in Gen 1 it won't pose nearly as much of an issue for it-but it will certainly appreciate the extra Attack.

Mega Mewtwo Y was definitely pushing the boundaries for a top tier, without mistakes ,run in gen 1. Because after all it has it all, almost 200 special with the best typing and some great stab options, and let's not forget amnesia. These factors made the red bar strategy a very viable option 😮,even though you'll need a specific luck to make sure quick attack or sand attack will ruin your run. I bet that a lot of runs(and time too) were lost due to that, and that makes me appreciate that run even more, because I would have given up for sure ,to have that kind of luck,and even more if I don't really have the time to put into that.😂😂😂 Wow, you're amazing for pulling that thing off.😊 I bet that even if it had to use weak moves (I mean bad moves or those that thier base power is less than 60),it would have a great time, maybe even a solid B tier finish.🤔

It wasn't all that bad just because the worst parts were like 7-9 minutes of real time so it was a fast reset. The triple Pidgey girl was really frustrating lol. I also think that if it just had basic moves, it would still do great but it was a treat to design and play!

Yup, exactly, because it's a better Mewtwo in most aspects. By the way,the back sprite was really cool. Doing a good gen 1 sprite is challenging, because you have less colours and the size is smaller than in gen 2 for example.🤔

You never think about her but some runs she has given me a lot to worry about. In a perfect world, I'd never have to restart and I even do in game time just to not have to full reset all the time for very minor mistakes but it comes with the territory. Things like that make me wish I had just done Jrose 'one and done' style format lol. It would be so easy to get videos out.

Mega Mewtwo Y seeking redbar: “Come at me then. Your attacks only make me FASTER.” I solo’ed Pokerogue with Mega Mewtwo Y. Absolute monster, even without Gen 1 crits or Amnesia. Thanks for the video! 13:47 I believe you can technically skip the Pokémon Tower heal by fighting an optional Channeler nearby and having her walk to you, but off the top of my head I’d guess that takes longer than healing and manipulating damage to get back to redbar, not to mention that it might make PP management more difficult. (Also, I bet many other Uber-tier legendaries and Megas could maintain redbar, but I’m not sure it’s the most interesting angle for repeated videos. 🤔)

Of course you can red bar with an absolute stat stick with completely broken typing and move pool that takes advantage of every bit of jank. @@GymLeaderMatt1987 Exactly yeah, fighting is just a bad type to have in gen 1, see poliwrath lol, and the stat spread is worse than Y in every important way and you still don’t have a stab move that hits opposing psychic types. That’ll be interesting whenever you get around to them, those old runs are kinda rough for sure. Do your thing man, it always makes for interesting content

As for the tier lists, maybe make a Mega tier which includes all Pokemon including megas to compare them to normal mons, but for any vanilla pokemon (cross or 1st gen) just keep them out unless the result is surprisingly stupid good? Also, congrats on becoming a dad :D The exhaustion is worth it I swear!

Well the problem with one tier list is its basically the cross gen runs with a few exceptions at the top so its basically putting this tier list with all the other Pokemon under it outside of maybe Mewtwo and Alakazam lol. I'll just keep working at it and when I get enough megas, I'll think of a switch.

It's impressive that Alolan Ninetales still manages to stay in the top 3 despite not having crazy stats, with it being only now dethroned from 1st. I guess it's due to Ice being surprisingly good in Gen I.

Yea, one day I'll do a statistical breakdown of types, average runs, etc and Ice really is the pound for pound best rated typing in the game. You aren't wrong and I can prove it factually lol. Ninetales is still the best non-mega though.

My worry was that the Psychic start of regular Mewtwo would be too much and the extra stats but only Confusion of Y might have a slower start to not make the it a clear winner. But its irrelevant. I've looked at the learnset and I just don't see it. It learns great things late but would need something like Brutal Swing to get through ghosts and would just turn into a body slam/swords dance user without access to coverage like EQ/Rock Slide.

Mega Mewtwo Y and Alolan Ninetales have just under 3 minutes between them. It's feasible that without red bar strats; the extra time for cries and healing could've just pushed MMY into 2nd place.

I’d imagine that since the Pokémon is still kind of beefy, I’d have given it normal potions while in red health (keeping it in red but having more HP) so that the weaker priority moves wouldn’t kill mewtwo. Or is the time to do it not worth it if you’re pushing the envelope on the run?
